  1. What does that mean? Again, are you kidding me? Not too hard to understand what that means.
  2. In many situations, it's also called wasteful baseball. Not true at all.
  3. Why? Are you kidding me? He managed a team with a $14 million dollar payroll, and had them in contention for the wild card untill the last 2 weeks in the season. Everyone predicted the marlins to lose over 100 games this year. The team didn't have a winning season, had some of the best young talent in baseball and he was responsible for sending one of their best young pitchers out after a long rain delay. The pitcher then had a season ending arm injury in the same game. He is infatuated with the sac bunt, made poor personnel decisions at the begining of the year and was told to make changes. I don't see any reason why the cubs better pick him. The Marlins were the first team in major league baseball history to be 20 games under .500, and later whould go on to be over .500 in the same seaon. Girardi is a leader. BTW, sac bunts are part of the game. Its called team baseball.

  5. Girardi better be managing the Cubs in 07.
  6. Is this model working for us? Should we look for a new road? I think we should. Heck, even some fresh blood from outside tribune would even be a better option. It's like impeaching Bush...is Cheney any better? Or impeaching Clinton?.....ya like Gore? I just can't agree with brining someone from in house to fix this. Gore for president!!
  7. Preach it. That's what I said all last winter. It's fine to try and improve the bullpen, but bullpens are shaky things regardless, because by and large, all relievers failed in their original role of starter at some point in time. They are second rate pitchers with limited abilities. Some can put together a nice career and make a pretty penny with their specialty. But these guys don't win you games. The 8 position players and 5 starting pitchers win you games. The bullpen should never be the focus of an offseason by a team that finishes near the bottom of the league, like the Cubs did last year. The bullpen never was, and still is not, the reason for success or failure. I am going to disagree with that point. The bullpen is so important for a team. Look at the Whitesox. Their bullpen was one of the reason's why they were not in the playoffs. The Redsox in 03 did not have a strong bullpen. Then in 04 they went out and singed Foulke. I believe that worked out pretty well. I would like to see Kerry Wood being the closer for the Cubs next year. There are questions marks though with Kerry being the closer. Can he throw back to back games? And could he throw enough strikes?
  8. As Vincent Kennedy McMahon would say, "Time to take out the trash."
  9. Other than possibly Moore we really don't have any kids that could provide good power off the bench. Pagan might provide okay power, but not the kind of power I would want when I need a big hit late. One or possibly two, depending on Moore vets would be useful for that purpose. As far as the bolded part, I don't think thats neccessarily true. If you go after a bench player who has had only one or two good seasons that both came in the last 2-3 years then it would be true. If it is a guy who has consistently put up solid numbers off the bench other than one or two years he is a better bet to do well than a rookie who is not used to coming off the bench and is used to being an everyday player. That's pretty much why I said "Unless the Cubs can get somebody likely to put up an 800 OPS, and/or dominate against LHP or RHP specifically". If you can find a guy who has consistently put up solid numbers, go ahead and get him. I guess where we differ is our believe in the ability for the Cubs to find those players. Hendry's record has shown he wont, with Hollandsworth being his only good bench signing. I think there are enough good bench guys out there, they just need to have a big hit in a playoff game so Hendry will notice them. Technically, Todd Walker was a bench signing by Hendry also, but I understand your point that the bench has been consistently pretty bad. Blanco is a very good back up catcher. Probably the best back up catcher in the league. I really hope Jim holds on to him. We have our backup catcher. His name is Geovany Soto. He'll be a much cheaper option than Blanco and we can use the money that we used on Blanco at someone more useful. Soto is not ready yet. Blanco handles a pitching staff very well.

  11. Who is we? I love watching Clemens pitch. He is one of the greatest power pitchers ever to play the game.
  12. Graffanino is on my bench for next year. I think it would be a good move. He can play multiple positions, and he will hit around .300 with a obp close to .355
  13. What on Earth are you bringing in Erstad for? If he's not healthy enough to play CF, he's got no value... and he's never healthy enough. Erstad is a pretty damn good player. No, he probably cant play CF anymore, but I was looking at him playing LF. Erstad is a risk I would take. Its not like I would sign him to a 4 million dollar contract. He would get something similiar to what Mabry got from the Cubs.
  14. Co-sign. Because he also destroyed our top two pitchers, Dusty's treatment of Corey seems to get overlooked. Another career destroyed. To blame Dusty Baker for the fall of Kerry Wood is ignorant. Kerry Wood was destroyed in High School when he threw back to back games of 150 pitches. Kerry Wood destroyed himself by not fixing his mechanics.
  15. If I were to build my bench, I would have it made of versitle players. Jay Payton(OF) Rich Aurilla(utility) Not sure if he would take a bench role. Tony Graffanino(utility) Henry Blanco© Ryan Theriot(2B, SS) Darin Erstad(1b, OF) Looks good to me.
  16. Might need to have an alternate closer waiting in the wings, though. If his arm can't handle the pounding having 5 days of rest, how will it handle having to pitch, say, every day for 3 days and then another 2 after 1 day of rest in between? That's the life of a closer at times. Not that I don't want him. Just saying. howry can close. marmol needs to be switched to the pen in 2007 imo too so they might as well try him at closing in iowa. Im starting to worry about Howry. His history of arm problems could come up again. He has pitched alot in the past 2 years. Hendry needs to add another bullpen arm.
  17. Your bullpen is not that good in my opinion. Need more reliable guys. Novoa, Marmol, and Aardsma have major control problems. Aardsma as the closer is a down grade from Dempster. Your bench is just like your bullpen. Only guy on the bench that catches my eye is Catalanotto.
  18. I wouldnt mind Jason Marquis. His ability to throw a sinker should help him in Wrigley. Still a young guy with a live arm.
  19. Everything you need to know about pitching is included in his program. Proper mechanics, proper weight training, good eating habits are some examples. He also gives you a throwing schedule, the same one Tom Glavine uses. His weight training program has really helped me. He makes sure you work on getting more functional strength.
  20. Thome is done? He's got a 1000+ OPS and will probably have played in 140+ games. Quick White Sox solution for next year. Keep Anderson in CF and let Sweeney play LF and put Fields and 3b. You then trade Crede and Garcia. Maybe workout a three team deal with the Orioles that lands the Sox Tejada. Or trade both of them separately and get teh best defensive shortstop available...Hopefully for the Cubs sake an Izturis and Will Ohman deal could net the Cubs Garcia. NO to Garica. His velocity has been up and down all year. This could be a sign of him having shoulder problems.
  21. The fact he is throwing out the stretch in that photo helps lead me to conclude that his mechanics are pretty good in that photo. I'd like to see him more foreward as he probably land short on his stride of where it should be, but his hand placement is fine on his throwing arm as he isn't short-arming the ball. All his momentum has been linear in that photo as there has been no hip rotation. It's pretty good overall. Yeah, he isnt short-arming the ball, but his arm is going to lag behind his body.
  22. I dont remember anyone saying that a pitchers mechanics is important for success. But by you bringing it up, yeah it is important. A pitcher with poor mechanics is more likely to break down than a pitcher with good mechanics. Having better mechanics means you have more velocity, and more control with your pitches. Im not a "former" pitcher. Im still pitching.
  23. Hand and elbow are too low, ball facing forward, body is ahead of arm. After just noticing those things, I could tell you that he will land on stiff front leg, and will over-stride or land on his heel. I just notcied that he is not using his hips enough. Which puts stress on the pitching arm. So I was right, cool. I haven't pitched in 6 years. What do you think about Sheets in 2004? Sheets in 04 was one of the better pitchers in the league. He played on a poor Brewers team, which caused his w-l record to be worse than it should of been. I already said there are the exceptions when using wins to judge a pitcher. But, I also said pitchers like Zambrano, Capuano, Johnson had alot of wins on poor teams. Which indicates how good they are by their pitching record. Their whip, k rate, and era are even better indicators. A better pitcher will more likely get more wins, but those other stats correlate MUCH higher to a pitcher's true ability. If you go to page 3 I think it is, I said I used WHIP, BAA, and IP to judge a pitcher also.

Which puts stress on the pitching arm. So, are you saying that you know more about pitching than Ben Sheets? Sheets knows more about how to pitch to batters than I do. Im sure Sheets knows what he is doing wrong. It is really hard though to change a pitchers mechanics. Specially considering Sheets has been pitching that way his whole life. Im pretty educated on the pitching side. So for you guys who think im just a pitcher who knows how to throw a curveball, and dosent know anything about pitching, you are false. No one said you don't know anything about pitching. You probably know more about the actual art of pitching than 90% of posters. No one is denying that. But most people here have a better grasp of what pitching statistics are important and show the true value of a pitcher. Sorry. Just because someone has baseball talent does not necessarily mean they are a better judge of a player's ability. Thats the problem. I do know what pitching stas are important. Just because I use an extra stat like wins to judge a pitcher, dosent mean I dont know what stats are important to judge a pitcher.
