  1. I'd like to see five years guaranteed, a sixth year vesting option, and a seventh year player option. I would not like to see the player option. I'm fine with seeing that 6th year option vest automatically if he averages 550 PA in years 4 and 5.
  2. No offense intended, but I don't see any possible way that doing steps 1-3 (and nothing else) will lead to step 4. Did you not read the rest of the post? It was sarcastic. Hendry has had a tendency to switch plans following the results of the world series, going for the "good clubhouse" approach after Boston won, and then the "guys who can catch the ball" approach after the White Sox won. It was a tongue-in-cheek analysis of how Hendry would interpret what STL did, and model the Cubs after it.
  3. Jeez! 5/70, with a team option in the 6th for 16m, and a 5m buyout. That makes it a 14.3m per if you pick up the option, 15m per if you don't pick up the option.
  4. Wouldn't that be crazy if LA ended up with Aramis? Wow. If the Cubs ended up with Drew and ARod I would live.
  5. He won't be 39 til Nov. 18, 2007. :party1: But he's gonna be 39, regardless.
  6. Conveniently both his free agent contract years. So did he conveniently get plunked last year? Interpret as you wish, this guy can turn it on or off like a light switch. He's that talented. I don't believe in clutch, but this guy's as non-clutch as ARod's portrayed to be. His knees are damaged goods. I don't see him even coming close to 3/4 of a season if he plays centerfield. That's a legit concern. But Scott Rolen has had multiple managers question his heart, and he's missed big chunks of time to injuries, likewise, Edmonds had a lot of "punk" type qualities to him as a youngster, and he's missed a lot of time for the past 5 years. It's still a good idea to employ such talented players if you get the chance.
  7. True. But the Bears have done it 5 times this year and are being dismissed by many because of the schedule.

  9. There have been some signs that OBP is being valued, and will be addressed. still, I'd like to hear some hint from a Cubs' reporter (a legitimate one, not Levine or Sullivan), MLB insider or the team itself, that there is any interest in Drew. Until then, I assume there is none. Well, he just became a free agent, somewhat out of nowhere. And nobody is reporting much of anything about the Cubs right now. But you're right, I would prefer to hear something soon.

  11. He supposedly signed a 2-year extension.
  12. I am surprised not too many are mentioning this. Because it's not particularly true, especially since he's left St. Louis. He missed more than half the 2005 season. I know a lot of people want him, but when you sign him you have to guess that he'll likely miss about a quarter of the season. He went on the DL. He was 140+ games in 2004 and 2006. The claim was 50 non-DL missed games a year.
  13. I am surprised not too many are mentioning this. You mean mentioning how inaccurate it is?
  14. The Yankees have agreed to trade Gary Sheffield to the Tigers for three prospects, says SI.com's Jon Heyman.
  15. What's to wonder? His role is best hitter on team.
  16. So what is Boras's position then? Why does he think he can get Matsuzaka back on the market at age 29 for the real payday? Can you put a clause into a contract making someone a free agent early? Maybe Boras thinks he can get that. In theory, you could demand a 3-year contract, plus a guarantee that the team would not offer arbitration after 3 years, effectively ending their rights to his service and making him a free agent.
  17. The risk of being blackballed by Japanese teams in future deals, the risk of having MLB come down hard of them for deceptive practices. The possibility of a lawsuit in response to them refusing to negotiate in good faith.
  18. Nobody was putting him in the HOF. OK, settle for multiple All-star appearences then? I was expecting something much close (but not as good) as what he did in Colorado this year 122 OPS+, compared to what he has done overall 81 OPS+.
  19. I agree. He's hardly the only option, and he's clearly no more of a sure thing than others. he may not be the only option, but in my opinion, he's clearly the best option. he's younger, he has more electric stuff than Zito or Schmidt, and thus more worth the money than either of those two. i just wonder what other FA options are out there for the Cubs to turn the team around. they weren't bad last year, they were god-awful. they need to make drastic changes. Hendry may have a big trade up his sleeve, but i don't see the Cubs improving dramatically through the FA market. i think a one-two punch of Z and Zaka is what this club needs, more so than Zito or Schmidt. perhaps i misspoke when i disagreed with your original point TheDude by saying the entire off-season hinges on this signing. but i think in terms of the other FAs out there, the Cubs are really blowing it by not going all out to get this guy. like i said, i don't think they will, and i think they'll regret it bigtime. If $45m is real, then the Cubs are not blowing it by not offering that. If they paid that much up front, then this guy would be the only improvement they'd make, and the rest of the team would suck.
  20. Theo isn't the one putting up $45 million. That would be an ownership decision. Right........you pick: Theo or JH? I'm not sayin, I'm just sayin. Theo has made a lot of reckless moves. He's probably better than Jim, but I'm not convinced he'd be all that great if you took $30 million away from him. Besides, you're talking about the bidding process for a posted player. The GM might choose whether or not to get him, but he's not deciding whether or not to spend that much.

  22. I agree. He's hardly the only option, and he's clearly no more of a sure thing than others.
  23. It's fine to be weary. And if Jim can find better options, that would be great. But beggers can't be choosers, and this team is desperate for increased productivity.
  24. I see Boston as a nice place for Drew.
