  1. I am holding out hope up until the date when guys can start to negotiate with other teams. If it reaches that point, I can't see him staying. I don't believe in the theory that Hendry HAS to keep Ramirez to keep his job. I do believe, however, that turning this team into a winner, without Ramirez, would be far too difficult for Hendry to accomplish at this stage of the game.
  2. I wouldn't have a problem with an opt-out after the 3rd or 4th year. By then, he'll be in his early 30's, and the Cubs will have already gotten his best years.
  3. You would be surprised if he repeats 2004 but don't expect him to repeat 2005? Or you wouldn't be surprised if he repeats 2004? I don't think he'll fall off that much, but I'm not sure he'll outproduce his 2nd best season, 2003. I typed that poorly. I meant to say that I expect a line more similar to 2004 next season. I doubt he comes close to 2005's production. If he repeats 2004, this offense will be in trouble. They need 2003 at the minimum.
  4. The adjustments theory makes for a nice story, but guys are always making adjustments in baseball. Adjustments don't always hold over time, especially when a serious injury happens. It depends on how you look at his pre-2005 numbers. He wasn't all that good in 2004, but he was much more productive, in terms of OPS+ in 2002 and 2003. So, pre-2005 is a pretty wide range. Since becoming a regular, Lee's OPS+ has been: 122 113 131 135 114 177 111 The worst case (barring injury) is probably the 110-115 range, the mid-range is probably 130-140, while the high end is 170-180.
  5. You would be surprised if he repeats 2004 but don't expect him to repeat 2005? Or you wouldn't be surprised if he repeats 2004? I don't think he'll fall off that much, but I'm not sure he'll outproduce his 2nd best season, 2003.
  6. But the offense stunk in 2005, when he was great, and we don't necessarily have a better all around offense with him. It's not enough to just improve, the offense has to get much better. It doesn't matter that teams have gotten by with mediocre offenses, it still really hurts to be below average offensively, and the only way to overcome such a detriment is to have outstanding pitching. And we aren't guaranteed anything close to outstanding pitching.
  7. =D> I'd like to see them throw Hester out on the field a couple times, even if it's just to be a decoy.
  8. The odds of that happening are remote. Yeah, no kidding. The Lee issue has really moved to the backburner in discussions, but going into last season, he wasn't a real good bet to repeat 2005. Now, a year older, after a terrible injury for a hitter that ruined an entire season (even though people maintained it was largely harmless and he'd recover quickly), we might be looking at a guy who puts up a sub 900 OPS in 2007. Quality numbers, but not superstar numbers. His OPS+ was 177 in 2005, the next highest number in his career was 135, at age 27. If he's much below his 2005 numbers, the acquisitions will have to be that much better, just to improve upon the weak 2005/2006 offense.
  9. He is probably marginally better, but the numbers indicate it's not a big difference. At this point in their careers, it would not be the least bit surprising to see either play better than the other in any specific game. The general description is quite similar. I don't know about that. The Giants beat the Bears and all of a sudden they are NFC favorites. If the Giants lose, the steam from their 5 game winning streak runs out, and they fall into a batch of also rans in the NFC. This is a huge game for both teams.
  10. What kind of special assistant is this? Isn't there a limit on coaches that can be in uniform during the games? I thought 1 bench coach, 2 base coaches, 1 hitting coach, 1 pitching coach and 1 bullpen coach was all they were allowed.
  11. I met a girl who is getting married Saturday. And the wedding is going to be at the same hotel where the Bears are supposedly staying. Maybe I should go to the bar and talk some sense into Turner, I'm sure he's appreciate my input.
  12. http://cubs.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/press_releases/press_release.jsp?ymd=20061106&content_id=1735150&vkey=pr_chc&fext=.jsp&c_id=chc The Chicago Cubs today announced that former Cubs shortstop Ivan DeJesus has been named the Major League club's special assistant to Manager Lou Piniella.
  13. Getting a free agent OF who will produce what Murton does only keeps the offense where it was which is really bad, and it takes away money from the needed improvements. The Cubs need to get better hitters and pitchers.
  14. Someone told me today that they should go to Greise if the Bears are losing at halftime to the Giants. Are these people high? I can't beleive that rational people could come to this conclusion. Football is one sport that really brings the stupidity out of people. Even people with no clue about sports have strong opinions on the Bears. Mike North this morning was talking about how last year Orton only "lost" us a couple of games, while Rex so far has "lost" one and should have lost 2 more. That sounds like pretty obvious, "say something to rile people up" kind of stuff.
  15. The annoying thing about this is Beltran signed that deal after his age 27 season. Lee and Soriano are both going into their age 31 seasons. He got a 7 year deal. Those guys shouldn't get more than 4 if they want that kind of per year deal. It's GMs like Hendry, who don't pay attention to the fact that guys peak between 26-28, that would make a deal like this.
  16. I wouldn't want to give that to any of those guys, but if I had to, then Ramirez would get it. He's the youngest, and has been the most productive over the past 3 seasons. Soriano might get a boost for playing a premium position, but he's not a good defensive 2B, and he might not be able to handle CF. It's not a lock, like Beltran.
  17. Calling for Griese to take over for Rex mid game is one thing. Calling for him to take over the team full time is another. I wouldn't see the point of either though. The Bears were giving that game away as a team, it wasn't just the QB position. If Turner would call more running plays with Griese in there, then that's a Turner problem, not Rex. It's not like Griese has a history of pristine decision making. He had a maginificant year 2000, and a nice 2004, but he's thrown his fair share of INTs. You have to give Rex the chance to lose the job. 1 loss does not come close to that. If the Bears started Griese for 8 games, there's no guarantee they'd be 8-0, let alone 7-1. If Rex keeps screwing up and the team keeps losing games, then I say go for Griese to salvage the season. But we aren't in salvage mode, we're in go for broke mode. Grossman just played his 16th regular season game. The occasional hiccup is to be expected. But if the team stays on track with him at the helm, and he keeps showing what he's capable of doing, then you are much better served playing him. Aside from trying to win a SB this season, there's the added need to determine if he's your longterm guy. You can't decide that with him on the bench.
  18. Considering their flavor of the month approach to personel decisions, I'm not so sure this isn't a one year deal. If he indeed pulled back on advanced scouting due to falling out of the race and upped the Asian scouting as a response, this could have been about one or two specific players. They were quick to leave Asia in the past, not sure how they view it longterm now.
  19. Or because a good portion of those that live south of the Chicago Metro area are Cardinal fans. Being 100% serious here. I would guess that the majority of people in Illinois are not Cub fans. They "may" have the most fans of any baseball team, but the Cards would give them a run for it. The Sox fanbase is pretty much on the South Side and burbs of Chicago I figure. I don't think Cards fans in Illinois come close to Cubs fans. The population is under 13 million, and almost 9 million of that is in Chicagoland. Eliminating non-baseball fans from the discussion, I think it's easy to say the Cubs fans are the largest group, with Cards and Sox fans fighting over 2nd place. Cards fans might take up more area, but not more population.
  20. How in the world does this make Hendry look stupid? The scouting is relevant either way. Lots of players overseas weigh this decision heavily, as it completely turn their lives upside down. It is a shame the player won't come over viw FA, but I don't see how that's Hendry's fault. I agree though he will still be ripped for it. He'll look a lot stupider if he overpays for someone who fails. I don't think this make him look stupid, but I'm not sure that's what wheelimus was saying. He was wondering aloud if this could cause an increase in the bid for the other guy. Investing in Asia and getting nothing out of it would be construed by many a failure, and by the tribsters as a misappropriation of resources. But I'm not sure how much they actually invested over there, and I'm not really sure that Hendry has been touting his overseas scouting. The important thing would be how he handles this setback, if it even is a setback. If he targeted this guy, and now he's unavailable, then he better have had a plan in place to find something else.
  21. I think that last point is debatable. Manning has more pro experience. But his 2006 rating is barely higher than Grossman's, while his career rating is a tad lower. Manning has a slightly better TD/INT ratio this year, and a bit better completion percentage, but by and large they are similar QB's. Both have big time potential playmaking ability, and both make stupid mistakes. As for the defense against the run, the Giants give up a little more than the Bears, and have given up several more TDs on the ground. I wouldn't call them amazing against the run. Good yes, but hardly invincible, and now they are injury depleted.
  22. That is possibly true, but only because he sees so much repeated pressure, that he almost starts to assume it'll be coming when he keeps dropping back.
  23. I think this way because Jim acts this way. He's reactive. The occasional salary dump acquisition really doesn't mean much. Time and time again, Hendry is out chasing yesterday's news. His whole 'save some for the trading deadline' theory screams of not aggressively filling needs. Going into last season with the "I've decided I like guys who can catcher the ball", as well as the chasing after the mythological much needed leadoff man, defines a guy who is not ahead of the game. I don't understand why you routinely fall on the defend Hendry side of discussions, when Hendry has done nothing but fail repeatedly. Acquiring a couple of individuals good players, or making a couple of individual good deals, does not mean nearly as much as the big picture. And the big picture shows that without a doubt Hendry has failed, big time. What is it about him that forces you to pretend otherwise?
  24. I think the problem is mostly Turner relying too heavily on Grossman throwing deep whenever possible, and abandoning the run. Grossman's mechanical flaws only seem to be exposed once the offense abandons the run and starts taking heat. When Grossmans mechanics are bad teams know they don't have to pay as close attention to the short and intermediate routes because they know Grossman will not be accurate. This allows them to be more aware of the deep routes. When Grossmans mechanics are good and can connect on the quick slants and the short-in/out routes it opens up the deep ball/which is what he does best. It's not like he just goes into a game with bad mechanics. He starts to mess up when Turner has him dropping back and throwing deep every play.
