  1. No kidding. This is where the throwing around of $2-4m deals to mediocre (or worse) replacable players hurts you. If a far superior pitcher costs only $5m more than the other guy, go with the better pitcher.
  2. Shopping a player indicates you are out there offering him to other teams in hopes of making a trade, like the Cubs did with Patterson, Farnsworth and Sosa, and reportedly are doing with Jones. Fielding calls is completely different. Any player who cries to his agent about wanting to leave a team that is fielding calls about him has no case. GMs would be hurting their team if they weren't willing to field calls.
  3. If the Nationals only want a pitching prospect, would a deal involving Mateo or Marmol work? The Cubs might could toss someone like Bynum or Pagan or Negron back in the deal to sweeten the pot. Do they just think the Cubs could be a suitor because they are looking for CF help, or do they think there is some actual interest?
  4. Well I guess the headband rule works. They are already a 6 seed? That conference makes the NFC look like the AL East. The 4th seed, and a division leader, is 2 games under .500. Maybe the Bulls do have enough to make some noice this season.
  5. You are delusional. He would have been lucky to take one step forward before losing his head. False. I have it on DVR and just slowed it down right now. Duggan is at the 34 yard line when the ball bounces off his pads. Briggs is 6 yards behind him, just across the 40. Vasher is at the 36, but about 7-8 yards toward the sideline. The safety is all the way upfield at the 25. He had 5 yards before he got hit by anyone and I doubt Vasher was going to knock him out, nor was Briggs when he was chasing him from behind. Do you think players instantaneously make catches and turn up field? Do you not realize how notoriously effective the Bears closing speed is? Seriously, you're in dream land. Your team got the crap kicked out of it by a team with a QB playing like a high schooler.
  6. I just noticed tonight's game is on versus, I'm going to have to watch.
  7. I still think the best thing they could do is trade him if they can get something of value. It's nice to see some of Tallon/Savard's ideas working since the change, but there's still no guarantee this team can keep this up all year. 4 teams remain between them and a playoff spot.
  8. The outs he makes by striking out are already accounted for in his OBP and SLG, therefore they cannot negate whatever OBP and SLG he has at the end of the season.
  9. Bears Pro Bowl defensive tackle Tommie Harris underwent an MRI on his injured left knee Monday morning. While the exact extent of injury was not available, "this isn't a season-ending injury by any means," coach Lovie Smith said. "We don't know exactly how long he'll be out but he has a sprained knee."
  10. yeah I didn't really hash out how the BCS rankings would be done in my system, because I liked the playoff that resulted, regardless of what formula the BCS was using that week. But I agree, get the AP back (I think they'd come back if you installed a 4 team playoff). I voted "2 but fix the current system". I don't mind having a 2-team national title and that's that, but the way they do it now puts too much variability in. There's really no way to eliminate "variability" if you stay at 2 and use human polling.
  11. He's not going to help Dunn become more selective.
  12. That is the first name that comes to mind. I just noticed the "minor league staffs" thread lists Peorie manager as TBA. This has to be it.
  13. Because high strikeout and low BA don't matter if you have a good OBP/SLG. Strikeout totals are meaningless. BA doesn't tell you much of everything. Unlike Mark Bellhorn, Dunn actually has a long history of putting up good numbers. He's not a perfect player, far from it. But I don't think anybody is claiming such a thing. He is, however, a perfect matchup with the Cubs biggest needs (LH power bat with OBP ability) offensively. Well, the high strikeout/low BA does negate some of his OBP and SLG. No, it doesn't actually.
  14. It is a concern. Then again, lots of guys have down years. When a down year still results in solid production, I'm not going to freak out about it.

  16. Considering they had him under control through 2008 at a reasonable cost, I have to guess he gave them a significant hometown discount for those later years.
  17. Rookies are expected to make mistakes. Especially when transferring from a college shotgun offense to an NFL system which believes the shotgun is as much of a stain on society as a drunk nude at a Victorian funeral. 4th years, injured or no, are not supposed to be making those mistakes - especially when they've had more time to practice in a system and it is not 'new' to them that year. Now one might consider that the error of the coaches, as it was in the case of a certain Harrington who is now winning games in Miami. Although given what Lovie has done so far, I very sincerely doubt that is the case here. I said it last year and will continue to say that Orton has a better shot at succeeding in the NFL than Rex *cough*McNown*cough* Grossman until proved either wrong or right. And right now, evidence seems to be on my side - Grossman has collapsed, while Orton was pretty consistent over the course of the year. Do you believe the shotgun is going to fix things? Orton had 3 games of less than 100 yards passing, completed a lower percentage of his passes than Rex and had a much lower rating than Rex. He had 5 games with a rating under 45.
  18. If an 855 OPS and 99 runs scored qualifies as awful in your book, then sign me up for a team of awful players, please. You do know how many runs scored our LEADOFF man had in 2006, right? Jacque Jones out slugged him and put up a 833 OPS. And who cares how many runs he scored? Jacque Jones out SLGd him, but I wouldn't say he out slugged Dunn. JJ just had a few more singles. Dunn blew him away with BB, and subsequently OBP. Dunn only had 5 more XBH's that Jones. I'm not opposed to having Dunn, I just wouldn't give up great prospects for him. And 77 more walks.
  19. Yeah, and if the Cubs don't put stock in it then it must not be important. The Cubs have an unusually high need for OBP ability, because of their unusually low collection of OBP. He also has some power, something the Cubs do value. Mark Bellhorn.
  20. I, for one, don't mind this method too much. If you miss something in a 40-page thread it's hard to get caught up. Well, it's a concise 11 in premium format.
  21. I fail to see how either point is even worth mentioning. It was a simple comment, no need to rip him for it. I'm not ripping him. I said I don't see the point. The tone of the post reflected annoyance at coaches making absurd rankings.

  23. Between the Bears and Vikings? Are you serious?
  24. Why not? Because I'm sick of discussing the merits.
  25. I want max production for the $$. Padilla and Lilly are going to cost you $20MM/year. Schmidt will cost $15MM, maybe $16MM tops. With that $4MM to $5MM, you can snag a Jon Lieber (Philly will cover part of his $$ to move him), or move some talent for a Westbrook or Jennings, which would likely involve a net increment of salary around the $5MM mark. Schmidt + anyone like that > Padilla + Lilly, for equal $$. We need a #2 starter, not four #4's. Did you miss what I wrote? I'm all for Schmidt. I'd love to get him. The problem is he's only one man, there's no guarantee you get him. If they don't, I'm fine with Padilla and Lilly. The Cubs don't need four #4's, but they do need 5 starting pitchers, and currently only have 2 who are good bets to pitch well for a full season.
