  1. It continues Link: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/09/20/AR2005092002093.html Man, that's disturbingly irresponsible. How could he date a Jew? I kid I kid. He sounds like the guy from Bull Durham, terribly immature and naive. His story sounds like the chaplain was leading him along to talk like this. If he's somebody that constantly gets on his teammates about their religion, he could be pretty divisive. He doesn't sound like somebody you'd want to spend much time with, but I'd say that's probably true of lots of players.
  2. I think we're going to have to count on Rich Hill at some point. His minor league numbers are incredible, and his 2nd half in the majors was, as you said, good. He's got it in him----there's something to be said for giving a guy the reins and saying "you can do it, so go do it." There's also a difference between giving such a player a full-time spot in the rotation to go do it, and counting on that guy to have an amazing year in order for your team to have a chance at success.
  3. In other words, this deal will happen in the next 24 hours. ;) Or people think it's pretty easy to get Hendry to overpay if you just plant stories about something costing him a lot.
  4. What lack of professionalism? Has this been big news? Did JJ go public and bash the team? No, he quietly went to Hendry and requested a trade. Pretty much the same as he quietly went about his business and had a good year for us last year despite the majority of the fans acting like idiots and booing him in April. The dude complained about the fans within days of his first games in Wrigley, while playing like crap. That's pretty stupid. He didn't start hitting until after the team began tanking, so by then, it was too late to win back the masses. He had a good year in the end, but he started out on the wrong foot, by his own actions, and went public with his feelings about Baker being let go. He made his own bed.
  5. Jones started out complaining about the fans, had some hilariously bad early throws, made terrible baserunnings gaffes, and couldn't hit. His play started out bad and at the same time he whined about fans. That's no way to get off on the right foot. It got a bit unfair later, but Jones brought much of it on himself (the booing, not the racist ignorance).
  6. It's pretty ridiculous that the men who get paid for having highly ranked teams play a significant role of determining how teams are ranked.
  7. Again, I'm not asking you to. However, you and I both know that, if healthy for a whole season, he has the power to hit more than 16 HRs in a year. And your posts make it seem like he has only demonstrated the ability to hit 16 home runs over the course of the season, which isn't accurate. Well, I'm sorry if you feel I shorted the guy, but I think my assessment was pretty fair.
  8. I'd be more concerned with the lack of professionalism of a whiny player wanting out than the lack of class by some fans.
  9. According to Cots, Baldelli only makes $750k this year, and $2.25m in 2008. And all he's guaranteed past that is a $4m buyout in 2009 (or $6m team option). So, he is still super cheap this year, and pretty cheap in 2008 as well. Financially, he's a pretty good option.
  10. I'm not asking for you to hand him anything, but I think you can be a little more objective in discussing his abilities by noting that his 16 home runs came in only 360 at bats. There's no reason to hide the ball a bit while making your point. I'm not hiding behind anything. It's not my fault he can't finish a season. The best he's done is 684 PA. He had 387 this year. You can't guarantee he carries on that rate over a full season, and even if he did that would be less than 30 HR. He is nothing more than a role player right now because he cannot be counted on to give you a full season of really good production. I'm not calling him a platoon guy or bench player, just a decent enough starter who isn't a difference maker. As I said, he has a chance to help you if he gets better, but being a young guy who counts on speed that can't stay healthy is not a good mix. I don't give guys 300/30/100 status unless they've actually hit .300/30/100, and I don't call a guy a 30 HR hitter if he's never hit more than 16.
  11. He should be able to start everyday without hurting you, and has a chance to be really helpful. He's a nice role player right now, but not much of a difference maker. Although the speed/small ball crowd probably loves him more than others. I think he is more than a role player. If he can stay healthy, he has 30+ home run power right now, which might increase over time. Plus, he is one heck of an athlete. If he ever develops better plate discipline, he will have a very high ceiling. I said right now, you are focusing on potential improvements. He's already experiencing leg problems, and having a tough time staying healthy. He did less than Felix Pie in the minors, and hasn't done enough in the majors to remove all doubts. So I'm not just going to hand him 30+ HR when his best season has him at 16. And I'm definitely not going to assume better plate discipline (which was worse than Pie's as a minor leaguer).

  13. thought you didn't like hill? :D why would a team have to give up two young, frontline major-league-ready players who are three or more years from free agency to get one such player? depends on how you define front line. It's kind of a loose term. Two starters? Well, you could throw together a guy capable of being a starting pitcher and another guy capable of being a starting position player, call them frontline, but really not have much there.
  14. I think it was hinted/speculated by many that Jones wanted to be dealt, but I'm not sure it was ever talked about as a formal request. I could see Hendry dealing Jones and then acquiring Floyd and Lofton, and patting himself on the back.
  15. Hendry keeps saying they do, yet he is hot to trade Jones. This is what confuses me. My best guess is, Jones has asked to be traded and they just aren't making that fact public. Well, I'm not one to harp on the need for LH bats, but the Cubs could use one, and definitely will if Jones is dealt. The Cubs were actually much worse against LHP last year than RHP, so in actuality, better RH hitters should make them better. The Cubs had, by far, the lowest OPS against LHP in the NL last year, while they were middle of the pack against RHP. But they are so extremely RH dominant right now, it's kind of scary. Jones and Izturis are the only guys who will bat LH vs RHP, and Izturis doesn't even qualify as a hitter. Last year they had Pierre (while bad, is better than Cesar) and Walker, to go along with Jones to start the season.
  16. I think Baldelli's name, and toolsiness, probably means he's going to cost a lot more than he's worth. He is somebody I wouldn't mind having on the team, but he's not somebody I'd like to see Jim Hendry trade for.
  17. No kidding. This is where the throwing around of $2-4m deals to mediocre (or worse) replacable players hurts you. If a far superior pitcher costs only $5m more than the other guy, go with the better pitcher. I agree with both of you, but I think the stiking point is years not money. i'd take 3 typical years of schmidt + 1 year were he completely falls apart over 4 typical lilly years. co-sign I would without question take the 3/1 of Schmidt over 4 Lilly.
  18. I think he will get in due to the hero status leveled on him by the writers already, especially the east coasters. He will benefit from a lot of subjectiveness, instead of straight up numbers. He was instrumental in two teams winning somewhat improbable World Series titles. He showed up in multiple Cy Young and MVP races. He was a dominant postseason pitcher in 4 seperate trips to the playoffs. He's pretty high on the career K list, and fairly high on the career ERA+ list. He's in trouble with the career wins, and doesn't have the seasons of absolute brilliance that Pedro, or even Koufax has to make up for the low total. If Boston somehow wins the WS this year, and he's a big part, I say there's no doubt he makes it. If not, I say he probably eventually makes it.
  19. That's unpossible. I'm just hoping for the best extremely inefficient team money can buy.
  20. And he'll love himself for it. At that point you just have to make the lineup as good as possible (in other words, much better than it is right now), and patch together the pitching. Padilla was the best of the bunch, and he's off the market.

If Lilly gets 4 years I don't think he's any less of a risk to fail than Schmidt at 4 years.
