  1. What do you think it would take? I dunno. If they really are disillusioned with him and think of Young as their #1, maybe we don't need to sell the farm. I'd pull no punches trying to get him though. You want Hill? Sure. Pie? Veal? Murton? None of those guys are off limits. Without another big bat coming in, I'd really be hesitent to deal Murton, but, yeah, I'd probably give up much of that to get him. I'd give up a lot more for Cabrera.
  2. How far did we get? We replaced last year's $9m pitcher, Maddux, with a $10m Lilly, and added a utility player who takes on part of the Walker/Perez money, and Soriano. They've added Soriano. It's really not very far. Agreed it's not far, but there are a couple of other things that will help (overall, I think as-constructed this is a .500 team right now, no better): 1. No Dusty Baker. 2. Healthy Derrek Lee for 150+ games 3. Izturis sucks, but he's better than Cedeno 4. No Neifi freaking Perez, John Mabry, Freddie Bynum or other assorted stiffs. 5. Lilly > 2006 Greg Maddux 6. Additional year of experience and maturity for Marshall, Guzman and friends. Cubs need a bonafide #2 starter (Hudson or Penny are all I see out there) and a bat improvement in the OF or SS, then they could have a legitimate shot at a 85+ win season and a postseason chance. That seems about right. With a healthy Dlee and by some miracle Prior comes back then we are right there in the thick of things. You might be right on most of that, but I'm not all the happy with counting on things to go right in order to get a shot at 85 wins.
  3. From DJ Gallo on ESPN Page 2: 12:12 p.m. Well, it's the final day of the winter meetings and I have yet to break a single story that has been correct. So I'm going to report that the Orioles are about to do something extremely stupid and the Cubs are set to grossly overpay someone. I don't think I can go wrong with that.
  4. From DJ Gallo on ESPN Page 2: 10:11 p.m. Phillies general manager Pat Gillick just consummated a deal with Ken Williams of the White Sox that will send Freddy Garcia to Philadelphia in exchange for Gavin Floyd and Gio Gonzalez. Word is that a video of them consummating it already has been leaked onto the Internet.
  5. We need front end guys. We've got the backend covered.
  6. How far did we get? We replaced last year's $9m pitcher, Maddux, with a $10m Lilly, and added a utility player who takes on part of the Walker/Perez money, and Soriano. They've added Soriano. It's really not very far.
  7. This whole thing started when I noted that Lilly might be getting pulled for pinch hitters early, if he keeps giving up runs at the same rate, (wait here while I get the quote) "since their regular lineup, as currently constructed, isn't going to be bashing people on a regular basis". You took umbrage with the notion that this offense won't be bashing people on a regular basis. That pretty much means you said the offense would be great. If you bash people on a regular basis, you're a great lineup. That's what great lineups do. I don't think they'd be great. You're wrong.
  8. Why is that? Unless you think we are signing Floyd to start. I believe the interest in Floyd is to be a part-time starter. Ward is just an extra bat on the bench. Hopefully that's all he is. But all Hendry said was he wanted a LH bat, and if they wanted to, he could be the guy who takes 200 PA away from Murton. If he's not getting much OF time, he's not going to play much elsewhere.
  9. It would also be fun if you could read what I wrote. I said it's silly to pretend you'd be shocked by an .011 point drop in OBP, off of a career high. I never said I predicted a drop back to career averages. I'm not sure where I'd predict it to be, but I wouldn't be shocked if it was below .340, and no honest, reasonable person would. If I had to guess right now, I'd probably predict somewhere right around .340. The problem is that a .010 swing in either direction is not the least bit shocking, so whether it's .350 or .330, there's no room for gloating either way.
  10. I'm not sure the Cubs have anything better than Garland that can be traded.
  11. Don't be surprised. They are talking about him as the # 7 hitter. I guess I should say I'm surprised he's not being considered for the 2 hole.
  12. What would be the question? I don't think it's crazy to predict an OBP over .340, I just think it's darn right silly to say you'd be shocked if he didn't surpass .340.
  13. I'll be shocked if Soriano isn't at least .340 next year. Shocked? Are you kidding me? Shocked? You'd be shocked if he had an OBP that wasn't higher than his OBP in every season but 2006? I'm shocked any reasonable person would think this way. There's no way a .335 OBP can be a surprise to anybody next season. He showed a huge jump in discipline last year, and will be hitting in a lineup with better players (Lee, Ramirez) behind him. Sosa's OBP jumped from .300 to .373 in a year when he learned how to control the plate, and it didn't go back under .350 until he got old. I'm betting that Soriano figured it out last year - I guess we'll see who's right. Comparing him to Sosa is an absolute waste of time. They aren't even close to the same level. Soriano was barely over .340 last year. For all that discipline, he was still just .351. You'd be shocked by a .011 drop in OBP from a career year? That's just silly.
  15. I'm pretty certain Murton is going to be sitting on the bench a lot more frequently than Izturis (not counting injury), so maybe Lou wants stability atop the lineup. I'm surprised how much they are talking about DeRosa as a 6 hitter.
  16. I'm in agreement here. If Marquis signs a deal for, say, $3M for one year, then I'm okay with this. I strongly believe one of the kids (Guzman is my pick) is going to break out this year. Having a disposable veteran in the rotation that can be pushed out of the way allows one of the kids to step up and grab a spot. If the entire rotation is filled with guys on 4 yr, $40M contracts, you might as well trade all the young pitchers. I'd like to see them trade a lot of young pitchers for impact position players.
  17. That's what I said. But stronger than what they were doesn't mean good.
  18. I'm going to lose it if we end up with Marquis, he sucks! This is ridiculous please for the sake of all Cubs fans NO!! Z Lilly Hill Marquis Prior/Miller/Marshall/Guzman This should be fun. We're looking at last year's rotation, with Lilly replacing Maddux and Marquis filling in for Marshall. I don't see any improvement if this happens.
  19. I think they'd be pretty wise to deal Garland in this market. They would, but first they'd be wise to actually get something worthwhile in return. Seriously, you've got inferior pitchers like Lilly and Meche getting $10-11M per year contracts on the open market - Garland should fetch a lot. The rumored deal in this thread is an atrocious deal in ANY market, and especially this one. I think Garland is in the same group of inferior pitchers. Maybe a little better than Lilly and Meche, but no better than Suppan.
  20. I think they'd be pretty wise to deal Garland in this market. I don't think this reported deal makes much sense though.
  21. Score some runs is nothing but an empty phrase. The Cubs have had the worst offense in the NL for a long time now, adding Soriano isn't going to make it the best. They've got a long way to go, and right now are probably nothing but above average. That is a gross over sensationalization. Middle of the pack offense when moderately healthy the 3 years prior to 2006 would be an accurate statement. Combine additions with a new philosophy and one would hope that we would go to above middle of the pack in runs scored. So again... why does everyone concede that that is a "good point?" gross over sensationalization? okay megahyperbolicnonsensicalgibberish. You think this offense is going to be great? I sure as heck don't. They are still quite weak in the most important stat needed for scoring runs, and that's OBP. This team is once again going to be an impatient non-walking hack machine. They shouldn't be as bad as before, but they were so bad at that before that they have a very long way to go to get to mediocre. Their physical talent will help them remain above average. But they need more help if they want to be great.
  22. I know it is, but being a GM involves taking calls at all hours, negotiating million dollar deals all day long and balancing a bunch of issues at once. It's highly stressful under normal conditions, and even more so when your job is on the line.
  23. He kind of has a "chokes in the playoffs" reputation there, right? I'd like nothing better than to take on other teams good players who just aren't good enough for them "when it counts".
  24. I'd take Peavy too. Pie and Marmol for Peavy? Are you thinking that Towers has had a brain tumor and cannot think straight anymore? Why is Peavy talked about as available at all? If they think he is who he was in 2004 and 2005, it makes no sense. Yet his name has been in play for several months now. Well, his name has been out there for some deals netting a major bat. But I don't think he's available for minor leaguers. If we were offering Lee or Aramis, that would probably get the job done. hmm... Who is their catcher? :D Barrett, Pie, and one of the afor mentioned young arms? Too high a price? Pending a physical, I'd do it. Peavy is an incredible pitcher if he's entirely healthy. I would too, but he is a big risk. I want the Cubs to have some greatness somewhere, either hitting or pitching. I doubt they'll do what it takes to have a great lineup, might as well have a great rotation.
