  2. That's exactly what will happen. Cubs management has pretty much told Soriano they will give him a spot and not move him around. So, that's either one corner OF spot locked down for 160+ games, most likely corner. Between Jones, Soriano and Murton, Murton seems like the least likely guy to get any CF playing time. Soriano would likely be next since he's never played a game in CF before. So, Jones in CF and Soriano in RF are pretty much locks with this team. That leaves Murton, Floyd and Ward to grab at bats in LF. Most pitchers are RH, so Piniella will look to get a LH bat in there against RHP. One scenario I should add, but doesn't really change anything, is that if Jones gets traded and Pie gets the nod in CF, that still leaves Murton, Floyd and Ward in LF. Murton loses no matter how this turns out. Trade him with the farm for Cabrera. Murton could get 500+ PA this season, and if he does, I'm fine with it. If he's getting only 350 or so, that's bad.
  3. Hendry is extended through 2008. A little parting gift from Andy.
  4. I don't know. Don't really care either. But that youtube video of the German Cubs fan was hysterical.
  5. Any chance Oakland wants to unload Kotsay? Not that I want him, but the Cubs were once after him, and I could see Beane unloading him and the remaining $15m owed.
  6. I understand why. Hendry realizes he needs more offense, but he's not capable of efficiently adding said offense.
  7. 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003 That was 4 seasons ago. Celebrate the back to back over .500 acccomplishment all you want, the fact is the Cubs have lost more than they've won with Hendry as a GM, and they've gotten considerably worse the more moves he's made. 88 and 89 win seasons are hardly an accomplishment, especially for a team that was a top 3 payroll in the NL during thoses seasons. And when you top off those seasons with back to back sub .500 campaigns, you lose whatever minimal amount of goodwill you've built up (unless the people who are handing out the goodwill are so excited about back to back .500 seasons that they don't really care about back to back sub .500 seasons. This should be a 90 win team every year, with multiple 95+ win seasons. The inability to reach that point is the GM's responsibility.
  8. They might argue over which toolsy gold glover hits the best with RISP, but the end result is the same. They keep making the same mistakes. Yeah, mistakes like acquiring DLee, Ramirez, Murton, Barrett, and Howry. Mistakes like developing Zambrano, Hill, Wuertz, Ohman, Wood, and Prior. These guys are so incompetent. Why do they even have jobs? I could do better with my elementary knowledge of statistics! i know, the cubs have been totally awesome since hendry took over! 5 outs from the WS. Hendry hasn't done jack. FIRE HIM NOW! Oh, and viva la revolution! Hoorary for almost! Hooray for 4 years ago!
  9. I really don't think it's that big of a deal, I would just prefer this organization start doing things differently. Part of that means hiring guys from outside the organization.
  10. Exactly. Wood's control, in general, is obviously a concern no matter when he pitches. Maybe it's a bigger concern as closer. But his 1st inning stats don't tell us a thing about any problems we should expect. I'd rather have a closer who walks guys as frequently as Wood stuff, but strikes them out and otherwise dominates like him, than Dempster, who walks just as many, but doesn't get the K's and doesn't dominate. Clearly Wood is not Rivera, but it's possible for guys with great stuff to get away with a few too many 9th inning walks and be effective closers.
  11. It might be better to look at rates and averages rather than BB totals as there are more PA in the early innings. Yeah, the 3rd and 6th are statistically his worst innings. 1st is pretty much middle of the road.
  12. They might argue over which toolsy gold glover hits the best with RISP, but the end result is the same. They keep making the same mistakes.
  13. My recollection is like yours, that as a starter he tended to struggle with his control more in his first inning, and then sometimes settle down later on. The stats seem to show that while he was wild in the 1st, it was no moreso than his typical wildness, and other innings were worse.
  14. Tim Wilken was an outsider. Yes, so was Lou. I guess I shouldn't have said "start bringing", rather, keep bringing. I just don't see the point in promoting a special assistant to the GM to assistant GM. I'd rather they get people from outside the organization for such an important position. I wasn't expecting much, but it would have been nice to see them try out some opposing viewpoints, instead of going down the same road that's led them nowhere.
  15. I've heard much more drastic versions of that accent coming from other Long Islanders.
  16. I don't have any knowledge of the guy, but it seems to me an organization as flawed and prone to failure as the Cubs should stop promoting from within and start bringing in new blood.
  17. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/writers/jon_heyman/12/20/topbargains.wednesday/index.html Seems like the most common description of the players is older guys past their prime.
  18. I believe he did say something about using Wood at the end of games, but it may have been just a throw-away phrase. This is from a Dec 6 article by Paul Sullivan. Cubs manager Lou Piniella also recently spoke to Wood, the first player he called after getting the job. "I plan to talk to a few of our players here, after the winter meetings are over, and one in particular is Derrek Lee," Piniella said. "But I have talked to Kerry, and we talked about the fact we really wanted him back and we planned on putting him in the bullpen. I wanted to see how he felt about that, and he really liked it. We were very pleased to have him back." Does Piniella plan to give Wood the chance to win the closer's job? "We're going to build up his arm strength and get him comfortable in spring training," Piniella said. "We want to do health-wise what's really good for him. Right now I think he's going to make a really good transition in the bullpen, but we'll let spring training tell us a lot about that."
  19. I don't believe Wood has always struggled in the first inning. I think his issue has always been that he often has 1 bad inning, but not necessarily in the first. For his career, opponent OPS against in the 1st is lower than the 3rd and 6th. I really don't think that's an issue for him. A guy like Tom Glavine has always struggled in the first, in comparison to the rest of his innings, but that's not the case with Wood. I think he has very clearly shown that he can come in and throw 1 dominant inning, the only question is whether he can do that 75 times over the course of a season.
  20. Best paragraph ever written: Five foreigners (Conception, Shawn Bowman, Caleb Stewart, Clyde Williams and Melvin Rosario) and five nationals (Lenín Aragón, Norman Cardoze, Right Rivas, Prosperous González and Danilo Sotelo) jumped to the field to measure their forces in the batting of largometraje, but only four of them happened to the second return, led by the nica Aragón, that unloaded five projectiles in 10 opportunities.
  21. Good thing is, and I haven't looked at the schedules, but I'd imagine those teams play each other a lot down the stretch. Fact is, the Hawks need to pick it up at home and against the bottom-rung teams. Over the few weeks they are at the UC and then have two here in St. Louis that they should be able to win. Take care of business and hopefully Tallon will be motivated (READ: spend some of Bill's bills) to make a few additions at the deadline. They have a 7 game trip in February when they play 3 of those NW teams, as well as SJ and LA. Then come home for 1 and go to NYR and DET. That could be a potential make-or-break trip for their playoff hopes. They have 18 games before that trip, and really need to rack up the point totals to give themselves a cushion.
  22. Baseball America and all the scouts they talked to. But, wild about him? I guess I missed those reports. I remember people saying he's a nice prospect and all, but I don't remember anybody going gaga.
  23. If IP is accompanied by solid effectiveness, than it is extremely important. By itself, it's worthless, just like knowing a guy can throw 98 or that a player is really fast.
