  1. I'm just excited about the game. The only concern is that everybody is picking the Bears.
  2. Samardzija at 13 is a bit of a surprise.
  3. I'm not exactly focused on it either - my team IS playing on Sunday - but I'm getting lost in all the new threads of Jarrett and Peterson and whoever the hell else said they're leaving for the NFL draft. Trying to keep things more simple. I'm not saying you were, I'm just glad that unlike many of the past several years, I really am not paying much attention at all to the draft.
  4. Who cares what kind of SBs he provides? He'd be relied upon for his OBP, although that's not a guarantee to be all that good. He's due $3.8m this year, then becomes a free agent. I'd bet Milwaukee would move him without extremely high demands, given his age and status as no more than a part-time player. I'd give up marginal pitching talent for him and consider working Pie into the mix with him later in the year.
  5. I love not being focused on the draft in January.
  6. I'm picturing Ron Burgundy here: Ron Burgundy: You stay classy, San Diego. I'm Ron Burgundy? Ed Harken: Dammit. Who typed a question mark on the Teleprompter?
  7. Ted Lilly has never pitched 200 innings in his career (197 is the high point). Jason Marquis has done it twice. Neither are a good bet to do it next year. I'd put the over/under around 185 for both of these guys.
  8. IT's definitely interesting, but something has to be said for the two different eras. The first timeframe coincided with the low scoring 80's and early 90's, the second occurred during the high flying mid to late 90's. His peak OPS+ years were at 27 (158) and 34 (169 - in just 475 PA). Then he had a 156 at 37, in 1997. His average OPS+ in those last 9 years was 135, while in the previous 9 years it was 129. His overall numbers spiked late in his career, but in relation to the league, they were close to the same.
  9. five-year deal, reportedly worth £128m. MLS must be expecting to a do a lot better than they have so far. This will be a steal by the end of the contract IMO. I really think this move is a floodgate opener and we'll see some real talent in MLS next season. I'd love to see Zidane and Ronaldo follow Becks over as well. I'd say that Ronaldo will eventually end up over here, but I'm guessing that Zidane is really done. That's ARod money.
  10. five-year deal, reportedly worth £128m. MLS must be expecting to a do a lot better than they have so far.
  11. They might be solid. It's hardly a given. I'm not sure what he can do either, but he's the one that brought them to this point. I'm not about to accept what he's done as the best option given circumstances when he's the one that brought about the circumstances.
  12. Maybe I'm crazy but I'm ok with this team the way it is right now. The OF is solid and the infield is too if they bat Izturis 8th or 9th I see them as doing fine postion wise. Not sure how crazy you are, but I'm not fine with this team the way it is right now, because I'm not happy with them just "doing fine". I want them to do great. I would, however, prefer the team as is, rather than minus Jones and plus Erstad/Finley/Williams.
  13. I'm not sure that's a fair statement. His minor league OBP is .368. He had a .330 in a partial season at AA (.395 after the bump to AAA). I think he's probably overrated by some, but he's not solely a .330 OBP kind of guy.
  14. Dish Network is not a subsidiary of DirecTV. It's a subsidiary of EchoStar Communications, ticker symbol DISH. DirecTV is a Rupert Murdoch/NewsCorp affiliated company. not anymore. murdoch sold out. hail caused me problems in Colorado - so maybe some types of storms do interfere. I said affiliated, not owned by. He agreed to swap out his stake in the company with John Malone, although that deal will take a while to be approved, and has thus far not been completed. I still believe that in the end, there will remain some sort of affiliation with Murdoch and DirecTV.
  15. In this market 13m isn't all that risky. FWIW, I like the deal. You're right. In this market, that deal could end up being a steal. With the proper contigency plans, it could be a hellova deal. $13m is very risky for a guy who could give you nothing. It might not be much in comparison to other contracts, but it's still likely to be more than 6% of the STL payroll. If he repeats 2006 at 6.5m per year, that's a major obstacle. It's potentially a steal if Mulder manages to repeat even his worst post-rookie and pre-2006 season.
  16. He didn't sound too sure about this point, I'll admit. The exclusive rights to HD content should, however, concern anyone who isn't a DirecTV subsriber. Luckily I am... Exclusive rights to HD seems to be something that would be shot down by congress immediately.

  18. Because lefties bring extra value without being any better.
  19. I guess, but I find that strange. I've been in some nasty storms without suffering anything more than a blip. NY doesn't have the daily showers of FLA, but there are plenty of bad weather issues. Trees would be an issue, if you have blockage, you're screwed. In my last place, I had a completely clear view of the entire SW sky off my 3rd floor deck, so it was no problem. In my current place, I have a much narrower window of clear sky, but it works. When I was looking for places, the two things I checked first were outdoor space (deck and yard) and access to the SW sky.
  20. How long before somebody writes about all the sanctimonious self important writers ripping to shreds the small-time writer who didn't vote the way they thought he should vote?
  21. That can't be accurate. Scott Downs won four games for the Cubs in 2000, and he was originally drafted and signed by the Cubs. Mind you, he was traded to the Twins and then back to the Cubs before he ever made his major league debut. Most of his minor league experience was as a Cub prior to his debut. That being said, the Cubs haven't exactly had a ton of great seasons from lefties throughout history. That includes pitching (especially relief pitching) and hitting. Oh right, Downs. I just remember this whole lefty pitcher thing coming up frequently. It's almost as if any lefty that pitches for the Cubs is doing some sort of first. I think it's no more than a side story. The Cubs have lacked quality players, lefty, righty, or both.
  22. Perhaps if the Bears had actually played well in such conditions you'd have a point. The Bears are the more talented team, and they are the faster team. Crappy weather is a disadvantage.
  23. Why do people talk about the virtues of other sports' playoff scenarios but also claim you must win your conference to win in football? Basketball has regular season and tourny champs and then has the national tourny. And there's no need to win your conference with win a championship. Yet that sport lets you "prove it on the field". No conference has a playoff, it's just one added game for more money, the same thing people bitch at the Big Ten about with the BCS controversy.
  24. Griese, but as things stand, I'd keep him. I won't be upset, though, if he's cut or dealt and Orton ends up 2nd. Enough of the offseason talk, I've got my mind on this playoff game.
