  1. A 16-team field would be absurd. There is no reason why teams that couldn't finish in the top 10 need to get a 2nd or 3rd chance to contend for the title. It's not feasible at all, since it would mean the end of the bowl system and suck money out of the system. There's no logical reason, but the teams from Big 6 conferences not about to go without an automatic bid to any playoff that exists. Sure, it sucks, but an 8 team playoff wouldn't include any Boise State. A 10 or 12 team playoff would, likely, but then you're already stuck with a 4th week of playoff games, which is no different from a 16-team playoff, and then every conference could be represented. But why should every conference be represented? And why do we have to design a system that gets Boise State a shot? They made their weak OOC schedule. It's their own fault. If they scheduled a tougher one, and still went undefeated, they'd be ranked higher. But if they scheduled a tougher one, they probably wouldn't be undefeated.

It's not feasible at all, since it would mean the end of the bowl system and suck money out of the system. There is also no reason to preserve the BCS rankings. You could easily got with 10 teams and play two play-in games. No, you couldn't. Besides, what's the point of making it easier to get in on the action? The way you win the college national championship is by playing a tough schedule and winning all the games. If you lose one, you better hope everybody else lost one as well. Complain about the BCS rankings all you want, they still do a better job of judging the best teams in the nation than just giving all conf champs a shot would.

  4. Not true at all. I have great signal strength but if there is a storm you can be sure your going to lose your service for the duration. I had high 90's on clear days back when I had my problems. It's not just picking up a great signal on clear days that means properly adjusted. Since having it installed properly, I have great signal strength on the clear days, but also maintain it during storms. I bet it's just not set-up well. Was it securely bolted into a stable surface without obstructions by a professional?
  5. Big conference schools do schedule teams like this every year. Look at Marshall, a conf USA team that should be in a similar "nobody wants to play them situation", yet they managed to schedule a Big East, Big Twelve and SEC team for their OOC. Memphis got 2 SEC teams on their schedule. Rice played a Pac 10, Big 12 and ACC. MAC school, Miami of Ohio played 2 Big Ten and 2 Big East. Northern Illinois played 2 Big Ten road games. In their own conference, Fresno State played 2 Pac 10 and an SEC team. Boise State played 1 Pac 10 team. They scheduled 2 OOC games against MWC schools and 1 against a 1-AA team. Heck, Hawaii went to an SEC school and hosted a Big Ten and an Pac 10 team. The opportunity is out there for schools from weaker conferences to play teams from bigger conferences. I say Boise State made its own bed, choosing to play a weak schedule.
  6. USC is hardly the only team willing to schedule tough OOC opponents. OSU and Texas have been playing each other for a while, a few big ten teams regularly schedule Notre Dame. The Florida schools regularly play one another (yes, Miami and FSU are now in the same conference, but it hasn't always been the case). Purdue went out and faced 2 top 25 teams on the road this year, OOC. Lots of teams do wimp out in that regard, but there is opportunity out there. If you're in the WAC and have national title aspirations, you better do anything you can to try and schedule potential top competition, and eliminate any ridiculous Sacramento State games. With pretty much every conference outside of the Big Ten and SEC complaining about the dominance of the Big Ten and SEC, there should be opportunity to get the best of the rest of the conferences to play you. If you have to go on the road to get them to play you, then do it.
  7. Well, Cruz has made a couple million dollars playing major league baseball for 6 seasons, and he's only 28. I wouldn't say he's just like the hundreds of other prospects who didn't pan out, he's one of the few that actually did something good in the majors. He didn't reach his peak, but an extremely low number ever do.
  8. Well, I'm not a big fan of the method of rating players based on tools over performance. However, this publication has always made it clear that they put a larger emphasis on projectability and tools and upside as a prospect over performance in the minors. It's not like they are determining who gets a chance in the big leagues, they are merely channeling the thoughts of many of the people who do. Frankly, I'd be a little more annoyed with the scouts and personel people who drool over bodies, rather than a publication that gives a wide audience a chance to learn more about players they've never heard of or seen. I'd rather they put out these lists than not. Less information is not better. It's not perfect, but no method of rating prospects is.
  9. I didn't watch much of the game, but I did see that opening return, and I thought I saw him slip right as he was about to be pounced on.
  10. I would not like to see them spend that much on another aging receiver. Gonzalez is very good, but he's not the same dominant force he was at his peak. He's scored just 7 TD's combined over the past 2 years, one less than Desmond Clark. He's obviously better than Clark, but I'm not sure he is better than Clark to the extent that he will be paid. I'd much rather see them solidify the aging offensive line and shore up the defense with whatever space they have under the cap, than spend big on a name player who is on the wrong side of 30.
  11. I heard his comments before they media had a chance to write them up, and I knew at the time people would say what they did about them. It was a harmless comment on his part, but any PR person would have told him not to say it, because it can be easily manipulated into a "I didn't try" type statement. ESPN has had a field day ripping Rex for this one.
  12. That's true. In NY, I was getting MSG, FSNY and YES before I ever ordered the sports pack, and I know you can get SNY, the Mets version of the comcast sports, without the sports pack.
  13. It was a huge issue when I installed it myself with my roommate way back when. But that was because we were idiots and just wanted it up as soon as possible. I've very rarely had problems since, yet we've had some major storms in the NY area. The worst I'll have now is the occasional 2-3 second blip, but that's rare.
  14. msnbc I've only read his articles that were linked via firejoemorgan.
  15. I don't see how you'd get Cubs games there. You'd get comcast pre and post game, but blacked out for the games unless you had EI. I'm not an expert, but I'd have to imagine that's well outside the area that would get Cubs games for free on CSN. I would call and ask to find out.
  16. There isn't a surefire way to solve the college football championship issue. My point is I don't really care if you're 5th and feel screwed. If it went to an 8 team playoff, #9 would feel screwed, and I'd care even less. They choose to be in the conference they are in, and they schedule their own out of conference games. If you are willing to remain in a weak conference, then it's your own responsibility to get tough OOC games to make up for that weakness. It's not like this system was just sprung on them. This has been the case for years. And prior to the BCS, they wouldn't have even played in such a big bowl game as they did.
  17. It might be seen as important after the season ends, but it's not. The system determines the seeds, not just the polls. Is that system any better or worse than the back door shenanigans used by the committee that seeds the basketball tournament? It reduces meaningful controversy. The bulk of the complaints came from the 3rd/4th spots. Those who are left out are always going to think they are being screwed over, but by and large, when you are left out of the picture, it's your own fault. You either lost a game you should have won or you scheduled a crap schedule.
  18. No problem. It's not like they'd have an advantage if they watched the NFC games live on TV, they don't strategize based off the video from the TV feeds. I think this is obvious to most knowledgable people, including the mediots. I think the problem, as seen by those who complain about it (not me), is that Lovie should have been preparing by watching game tape of his potential opponents and maybe preparing Rex, although that is what Wade Wilson is for. No rational person can expect these guys to be watching tape and preparing Rex 24/7. They have off days. Nobody has a problem with them taking off days. Nobody would be complaining if he sat at home and watched the game with his wife. This is just complaining for the sake of complaining without any reasonable basis for the complaint.
  19. Eliminates the controversy? What if you have a situation (like this year) where there is one major conference undefeated team followed by a run of 1-loss teams. How do you justify these 3 1-loss teams over these other 3 1-loss teams? The preseason polls and voter bias suddenly reward some and screw others Selective reading? It eliminates the controversy from the top 4. That means the 3rd and 4th ranked teams that were bitching, will not be bitching because they'd be in. If you're 5th, too bad. No matter how far down you go, people will complain. There are idiots who complain about not getting into the basketball tourney, or about not getting a high enough seed, or easy enough bracket. None of that is meaningful. There is only one surefire way to guarantee a chance at the title, that is, schedule tough games and win them all. If you go undefeated but don't play anybody, it's your own fault. If you lose in the middle of the year to a tough opponent and end up on the outside looking in, too bad. That's how you keep the regular season meaningful. That's how you reward greatness. That's how you determine a college football champion.
  20. Yes, in the season, including over teams in these playoffs. The 4 games that went "as expected" are not much of a meaningful trend. Every playoff season includes upsets.
  21. Basketball has a top 25 ranking and a championship game. That's not a fundamental flaw. The rankings are used to determine who gets to play the game, and the game determines who the champ is. A 4-team playoff doesn't eliminate controversy, but it certainly reduces it. If you take the top 4, that eliminates the controversy coming from the top 4. There will be bitching by the 5th/6th ranked teams, but I say too bad. If you didn't play well enough in the regular season to be ranked 4th, that's your own fault. And if you ended undefeated but were not ranked, schedule better opponents. The biggest problem with a large playoff is there is no motivation to schedule meaningful out of conference regular season games. The regular season is still the bread and butter of CFB, and I think it should remain so. I think it will change with a +1 game, then a playoff. The BCS setup was the first step in the gradual transformation away from voting for champs and playing for champs. A 4 or possibly 8 team playoff is the inevitable end. Anything larger than that would be absurd.
  22. No problem. It's not like they'd have an advantage if they watched the NFC games live on TV, they don't strategize based off the video from the TV feeds.
  23. I think a playoff game would mean a lot to the confidence of this team and its fans. I'd love to see this team in the Super Bowl, and I probably wouldn't be nervous at all becau I'd just be happy to be there. EDIT: Yea, there is another bye week before the Super Bowl. Its fairly new I think. There is a certain amount of "the first one" anxiety with this team. They haven't won a playoff game in forever. But everybody should be at least a little nervous before a playoff game, divisional round or not. Nothing is guaranteed in the NFL playoffs. You don't have a 7 game series to make up for a bad loss. It's one and done, and anybody can win. Underdogs have won a ton of games this year. As for the pre Super Bowl bye week, I think it's been around for a long time. It's just recently that they reinstated it on a permanent basis. There was a bye week for a lot of super bowls prior to 2001, including the Bears/Pats Super Bowl XX.
  24. If you can, break it into a writers category and an announcer category.
  25. Sounds like you think the publications primary focus should be on promoting players. That's not how I read it - I saw it as a desire for the focus to be on balanced reporting based on actual performance, rather than perpetuating preconceived perceptions. He's clearly angry that they stick with their guys even when performance would suggest others may have passed them by. But I'm still struck with a sense that he thinks BA's job is to promote the players' careers.
