    That's a popular theory, but to my knowledge no objective analysis actually backs it up.

    The Cubs have something in their hand but it's not a bird, and it most definitely is broke. I would not consider a trade of the studs if this team was coming off back to back 90+ win seasons, but this team sucks. Anything to improve them should be done. Would you trade ARam for Wilkerson and Hernandez and re-sign Nomar to play 3rd? No way. Yes.

    I would not be upset if Giles stayed on the west coast. I'd be pissed if he ended up anywhere else. Giles is not the end all be all. He's just the best option right now. It doesn't matter how he does it, the bottom line is Hendry has to make enormous improvements to the OF.

    Right now they are discussing a multi year contract for the multi purposed Macias. What worries me is who Hendry confides in....Hughes. This and Baker may make any good move difficult. These guys still live in the 70's. :lol: I just pictured Hendry hanging out in the regal beagle with Larry, trying to pick up chicks while discussing the Cubs future.

    You're right, we don't know if relieving would be worse. But what we do know is he can't start. He is not young, he'll turn 24 this winter, and he only has 400 pro innings. He makes Kerry Wood look reliable. Was this his 2nd year on the 40 man roster? Wouldn't that mean next year is the last chance he'll have? The Cubs can't afford to hope he proves he can stay healthy as a starter for a year. They certainly can't rely on that being the case. I think the only realistic option is throwing him into the pen next year. If he starts out well, call him up and give him a job. If he gets injured again, you can't blame it on the move to the pen, because he's got injured at every other turn.

    Then they are screwed. They have no choice. They must improve the OF. I don't buy that. Have something like Lee, Kent, Furcal and Ramirez in the infield and Murton, Lofton and say Jacque Jones in the outfield, and the offense looks alright. Pitching is what usually wins titles anyways. You don't buy it. Alright, I'll give you the one exception. If next year's infield is Aramis (and he doesn't get injured), ARod, MGiles, Lee (and he doesn't regress, and they get serious pitching upgrades, then maybe they'll contend without improvement in the OF. I think people forget, this was a sub .500 team. They were not in contention the last 2 months of the season. They stunk. And the OF was pitiful. Unless they seriously upgrade the OF, they will have to have enormous upgrades elsewhere to even think about contending. And no, Furcal and Kent don't even come close to getting that done. Kent? Are you serious? Mr. Defense and speed first wants Jeff Kent at 2B?

    Furcal's speed will create more runs than Walker. Furcal's more likely to score from first on a double, and to score from second on a hard hit single or shallowly hit flyball to the outfield. That's just a few examples of how Furcal's speed puts more pressure on the defense. They are examples, sure, but they don't really tell you anything. I could give you examples of situations where you need a double or a homerun, which would make Walker more valuable. Citing specific situations where a player's strengths would be useful doesn't do a whole lot to justify going after the player. What matters is overall production.

    As a .270 hitter coming into the season, that was a pretty decent description of Lee. The funny thing with Mueller is that he was always a .290+ hitter, and Dusty Baker said he'd win a batting title one year.

    Which one of those two is supposed to be their most popular? Livan. I remember earlier in the year somebody claiming that Wilkerson was the face of the franchise and they'd never trade him. I doubt that. As for Livan, pitchers aren't normally the face of a franchise, considering they don't play everyday. It's hard to market a team and try to sell tickets based off a guy who might get 16 home starts. Besides, I think his little outburst about not wanting to pitch there anymore might have hurt his chances of being THE GUY in DC. If I was the GM, I'd deal Livan. That team needs a serious overhaul. Yeah, they had some success this year, but a .500 record is probably peak performance for them, and I don't see much else happening soon, especially before they get ownership and a new stadium built.

    I have very little faith in 3 of the 4, and am not all that high on the 4th, so I'd love it.

    The .340 was Murton. What I meant to say about Wilkerson is you might not get much better than that from him. I wouldn't pencil him in for a near 900 OPS. Things have been down in recent years, and while I love the patience and walk totals, I don't trust a guy who relies so heavily on the walk, while playing for Dusty. Make no mistake, I'd love to have him in center and leading off, moreso than Furcal actually. I was just talking about total OF production, and making a point that an OF of Murton/Wilkerson/???RF??? better have a very production RF in it. Murton/Wilkerson/Burnitz wouldn't cut it.

    I understand that. But my point is, unlike last year, when Dubois was never going to get a chance, I see Murton getting the job from the get go, no platoon. He'll lose it with a slump, of course. But when you said platoon, I thought you had something specific. If they end up acquiring a list of guys like Wilkerson, Nixon and Wilson, then I could see a platoon.

    What platoon is that? With Baker ther do you really believe that Murton would play 145 games? If Hendry has a warm bodied veteran OF on the 25 man roster he will get a lot of time in left....especially if he hits left handed. Well then I don't see how you can assume a platoon would hit 20 (not that HR totals matter). I don't really assume a platoon in LF. I have to wait to see who is brought in. I wouldn't assume Grieve or Hairston gets that job. I could see Dusty starting Murton for 150 games. Of course, the first sign of trouble could change that.

    They'd still have to come up with that solid RF to make this deal worthwhile. Wilkerson would provide nice OBP, but he's not stud in that department. Along with Murton that would be a decent LF/CF, but unless you get a really productive RF, you still run the risk of having weak total OF production. I wouldn't go into 2006 expecting anything more than .280/.340/.430 from Murton, and you might be looking at about the same thing from Wilkerson.

    What is the point of that question? He's a career .300 hitter with an OBP over .400. The elite hitters all do that. What does that matter? Are we comparing him to Alex Gonzalez now? Your words sound exactly like the things I hear from Yankees fans talking about how clutch Jeter is, except in the other direction. ie. "I remember a couple times he didn't come through, therefore he never comes through." I watched a series against the Mets last year in Philly when Abreu beat them repeatedly. But I'm not going to use that to say he always comes through.

    CP20, We can't totally ignore what Ted is saying, though. 2005 Pre-All Star .307 .428 .526 .954 (18 home runs and 58 rbis) 2005 Post-All Star .260 .376 .411 .787 (6 hrs and 44 rbis) Hoops I choose to ignore it. I watch plenty of Philly baseball, and know plenty of Philly fans. I'm well aware of their feelings toward Bobby. Yes, he had a bad 2nd half. Really, he went cold right after the all star break, got real hot again, then went cold at the end. It happens. The guy has been a remarkably consistent productive hitter for 8 years. He's only 32 next season. I'd be ecstatic to see him in a Cubs uniform the next few years.

    That complicates things some. Crawford doesn't get expensive for them until 2009, so unless they just feel a need to move an OF, it might be more expensive player-wise to get him. Of course that 2006 figure would make him fit ideally into the Cubs budget for the next couple of years. I wouldn't have a problem dealing Dope and Harvey for Crawford, but not with that contract. No way I want to commit $30 million to the guy. Crawford is what I hoped Corey would turn into after last year. His lack of patience means he'll never be elite, but his speed helps him provide some decent SLG.
