  1. Of course he's included. I think it's debatable whether he's truly the most dominant, but he's in the picture, and probably will be for a couple years.
  2. It's certainly not the worst thing he could have said. But it's perfectly fair for people's ears to perk up when they hear/read it. He's giving preferential treatment to a 38/39 year old coming off a terrible year. And apparantly all this guy has to do is look good (not play well, or produce, or prove last year was a fluke, just look good) and he'll get a job.
  3. I have a problem with both. I hate the idea of tenure in baseball. If you've had a job before, you're automatically assumed to be qualified for that job now. No, I think you do kind of agree with the idea, but maybe not to the extreme that Dusty and others do. Do you really think that Pierre has to out-preform Greenberg in SP to get the starting spot? Does Lee need to look over his shoulder and worry about Dope? Should Prior be concerned that if Hill out pitches him this Spring, that his job is at stake? Easy answer: no. Hard answer: what if they go 0-50 during the cactus league? Maybe? It's all relative. Pierre vs Greenberg and Lee vs Dope is not close to the same thing. Grissom is coming off a terrible year, he was never that good to begin with, he's really old and quite possibly done. He should have to prove he deserves a job. Lee proved he deserved his job, as did Pierre.
  4. Jim Hendry is the best GM in baseball. (plus JW was far too young to fit in with his old teammates)
  5. That's a stretch. They should try and sign him to the cheapest deal possible. Non-guaranteed is cheaper than guaranteed. Plus, they had roster issues that made such a contract difficult. Furthermore, "they" are different people. Dusty didn't sign Grissom. And once Dusty has a worthless veteran available to him, he'll do what he can to play him.

  7. I don't trust Baker to know when a guy can no longer help your team.
  8. He has shown that ability, but he showed that years ago, when he wasn't a half broken down 38 year old. You'd be hard pressed to justify putting him in CF right now. I just hope somebody like Sing or Restovich has a great spring, and that they wise up and go with 6 relievers and keep Greenberg for 25th man duty as backup CF.
  9. I'd want more strikeouts and fewer walks. He gets a good amount of K's, but it's well below the number that dominant closers have. I'd say Joe Bo was better in 2003. Joe didn't walk guys and struck out a few more.
  10. It's so much better than the cartoonish blue.
  11. And that's all we want out of them - a utility role. Pay these guys $350,000 a year and they'll give you the same or similar production as you get from most of your $1 million options.
  12. As for Dempster, I'd put him between the two groups. He's not a junkballer getting lucky, and he's not dominating people. But he can be pretty unhittable at times, and he can be fairly effective.
  13. But Grissom does need ST because he has to prove he's better than he was last year. Why shouldn't he have to prove that? Why should it be assumed he's decent? Why should younger players have to prove themselves but oldy McGee doesn't? And who are these people whose growth will be stunted on the bench? Pie is the only one. Everybody else has gone through the development process, and are either going to be a bench player anywhere, or never make it. Brandon Sing isn't going to be stunted if he's a bench player, and he's not going to develop anymore if he goes back to the minors. Restovich isn't going to be stunted, Greenberg isn't going to be stunted. We're not talking about a choice between a 33 year old still productive veteran and a 21 year old with less than 1000 pro plate appearances.
  14. Brad Lidge is 100 times more overpower than Beck, who epitomized crafty and sly.
  15. The only player that the development question pertains to is Pie. There are plenty of other younger candidates who deserve at least as much of a chance as Grissom, who is not a known quantity. A known quantity is a player whom you have a pretty good idea what he will do with the job. Grissom could be worse than Macias next year, or he could be an acceptable bench player, we don't know. His age and career path makes him an unknown. You'd be foolish to just hand him a job. If anybody should get the benefit of the doubt it's Restovich, who at least stands a chance to be good for a few years and contribute to the team.
  16. I thought that's what I saw at the bar. They do that kind of thing a lot.
  17. No he isn't. He was absolutely terrible last season. Completely worthless. He had three marginally successful seasons before last year, but those were after 2 absolutely terrible seasons. I hate the stupid idea that "proven veterans", once they make the big leagues, are just assumed to be big league material. Grissom could be absolutely terrible again this year. In fact, he probably will be, given his age and mediocre career. But it doesn't matter to Dusty (and apparantly many fans) because he was once decent, so we can just always assume he'll be decent, no matter what he does in the spring.
  18. Yeah, just what we need - our new leadoff hitter on the shelf with 3 broken fingers. Pierre is the best bunter in the business. I'm sure he knows what he is doing, unorthodox or not. I'm sure he knows what he's doing, but he's still leaving his fingers susceptible, unnecessarily. Even if it works 99% of the time, it only takes once to ruin a season.
  19. I definitely think it makes sense overall. It's just interesting in the Cubs case because they've had that trouble, and they've talked about stressing fundamentals.
  20. All spring training games now have a DH. It's going to be curious to see how this affects the pitchers when they do bat in the regular season. Given how bad many Cubs pitchers have been at laying down sac bunts, I wonder if they could use the practice.
  21. Oh come on people, now is not the time to discuss his greatness, the dude is talking about stuffing large quantities in his mouth. More should be made of this.
  22. Didn't Detroit trade for a star in Wallace, well after he was developed, to put them over the top from perennial eastern bridesmaid to championship team? Anyway, I just think the Bulls chances depend on when they are able to find somebody else's superstar, because they don't seem to have one, or the ability to develop one (how many top 10 picks have they had since the dynasty broke up?).
  23. He moved to a park that killed hitters, why do you ignore that? And there have been plenty of players that had a big down year in the one year they missed signficant time to injury. From 67-68 Santo lost almost 100 point in SLG in what should have been his prime years. Was he on roids? At 32 he missed 30 games, was it roids? Between the ages of 32 and 34, Dawson lost 64 and then 28 SLG points, and missed a ton of games. Was it roids? Ryno lost 93 points in SLG one year and 98 another.
