  1. The problem is he doesn't have any accomplishments. Yup. 2003 was crap. So was 2004. He accomplished to construct an 88 and then an 89 win team, that in the end accomplished nothing more than one playoff series win. So, I guess that's what we have in the accomplishment category, one playoff series. 4 years, one series win. A sub .500 record. Yay for lowered expectations.
  2. The problem is he doesn't have any accomplishments.
  3. I think he was being sarcastic, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was true. He basically said the Bears got lucky that the Saints decided to give them the game.
  4. Tell that to Maddux. Beat me to it. Thought it was telling of how complimentary Maddux was on the LA defensive infield and how worry-free he was with them behind him. He's not one to throw parting shots. I thought that was extremely weak of Maddux to insinuate the Cubs defense is why he struggled. He sucked last year. The fact is, defense is not why the team struggled, and improved defense isn't going to win them more games. The Cubs need production, and they need it desperately.
  5. Z - outstanding ARam - pretty darned good Lee - pretty good Soriano - pretty good DeRosa - meh (pretty minor dollars in the grand scheme) Lilly - meh to blech (but tradeable if he stays healthy) Marquis - double blech The top 4 guys are a pretty solid core, though. Yeah, Soriano's going to be overpaid. The others are worth their money, though. Tim, weren't you the one worrying about Ramirez's age/size down the road. I'd say "collectively very shaky group" is a very accurate description. We're not talking about ARod, Santana, Pujols types. Ramirez would be 31, Lee 33, and no matter how you cut it, he's only had one outstanding year in his career. Soriano is extremely unreliable for a top dollar player. It's a solid core, but not among the elite cores in the game. It does have potential to be a very good collection in 2009, but it is shaky.
  6. Well, it's in the NFL network's best interest to pump up the possibility of a great game. SI.com has provided several "bears have no chance" type articles.
  7. HA HA For the record, that article shouldn't be substituted for reputable sports services that are all saying it will be a great game. SI?
  8. The thing is, he's convinced that he is the only guy out there really studying the game. He claims to be an extremely thorough, meat and potatoes instead of fluff and nonsense kind of expert. Yet he's routinely just dead wrong on many issues.
  9. That's a key point. He handicaps the team each year by insisting on fielding the least patient team in baseball, so the offense stands no chance of picking up the slack if the pitching suffers any sort of setback.
  10. He is being highly critical of the Bears near loss to Arizona. Yet Indy did lose 4 times, to teams that were anywhere from mediocre to bad. This guy has been wrong so often on SI for as long as I can remember. I actually think he has made a name for himself by being so inapt. Bears as the worst team last year was just beyond absurd. I thought they were a lock for about a 9-7 season. That team stood no chance of being worst in the league. he has admitted in the past that he has had problems with people in the organization, both past and present. Picking them to lose to Indy is perfectly reasonable. They should be the underdog, and I don't even think 7 points is absurd. But Z is acting as if the Bears stand no chance. He's such an NFC east homer it's shocking when he's able to talk about any team outside the area.
  11. As stupid as it is, it's also incredibly lazy. It's kind of like the people who would go on to the ESPN message board and ask others to find them stats on a player. That always cracked me up.

  13. That sums up Hendry's style to a T. He fields a roster based on best case scenario and is terrible at taking into account likely/possible regression, setbacks and injuries. If a guy hit .300 hitter for a month, Hendry will call him a .300 hitter. If a guy once made the all star team with sketchy stats and has never come close to repeating those, he's an all star. If a guy won 15 games once, he's a 15-game winner. Hendry labels guys with their best attributes, and hopes those will show up in the future. He's got to get better at dealing with setbacks before they happen.
  14. I don't know that I agree on that part. There are plenty of people investigating baseball cards for the profit of turning a buck that couldn't care less about said team or organization. Obviously this guy cares about the Cubs. Maybe, but perhaps he has no clue about any other org. I know plenty of people who know nothing about their fave teams other then the 25 guys on the ML roster and the manager. That was me as a youngster, and yes, I loved and obsessively collected baseball cards at the time. Your argument that b/c he collects cards he must be more than a 'casual fan" is weak. That wasn't my argument, so your rebuttal was therefore weak. Here are the facts. He has internet access and knows how to use it. He knows how to get to the Cubs website, find the Q&A section and submit a question. He goes to ebay and searches for, and apparantly examines baseball cards. He knows the Peoria Chiefs are the Cubs single A team. I'm assuming he's not a youngster. If he's 8, I take it back. But his wording makes me believe he's got to be at least older than 18. Therefore, you negate any chance that he's only aware of the 25 man roster. He should clearly know that was a stupid question. I wasn't going to make a big deal out of this until people were aghast that I agreed it was a stupid question.
  15. Lots of QB's progress up the ranks from backup status. Orton doesn't have to run practice squads the rest of his career. But he could end up being a nice Mike Tomczak style longterm backup role with the Bears. Griese may or may not be back next year. I don't think it's a guarantee he's better than Kyle by then. Orton can progress via practice and studying. He's under contract, isn't he? A 3rd string QB doesn't have much leverage to force a team to move him. I think you're being entirely too impatient with this situation. There's no need to do anything with Kyle right now. Even if they keep the same 1/2/3 next year, Griese is definitely not coming back for a 3rd year as the backup. By 2008, at 26, Orton could be the proverbial heartbeat away from the starting job. I definitely think that he would have to consider that a very nice career trend for him.
  16. But wouldn't the fact that Indy has a better passing game open the possibility for the Colts to have a bigger running game in the SB? That's a seperate issue. Somebody said the Bears RBs are better. I didn't see "total running game". I saw RB. I think the Bears RBs are better than Indy's.

  18. TBS is picking up more national games this year.
  19. I go to the local bar for Sunday Ticket. How much does it cost to have it in a residential setting? I think it cost me around $200 this year. I figure I'd easily spend more than that over the course of the season if I went to a bar every game. Oh, I can guarantee you I'd save money by not going to the bar. My last bar bill was $52.00 between the wife and I for the Bears/Saints, and that was a game I didn't have to go to the bar to see. But, we've met a lot of Bears fans by going to the bar. The bar setting is more fun. The bar provides free Chorizo and eggs, also. I have anywhere from 6-10 friends over every Sunday, it's fun. I've done the bar thing, and it's nice. But I don't think it's more fun.
  20. I go to the local bar for Sunday Ticket. How much does it cost to have it in a residential setting? I think it cost me around $200 this year. I figure I'd easily spend more than that over the course of the season if I went to a bar every game. How much is a beer in a NYC bar these days? I'd be watching in Hoboken (Eli's hometown), just across the river, but similar prices. If I went to a bar for Sunday football, I'd be spending $3-5 per beer, plus food, every Sunday, from 12:30-7:15 (at least). I could probably get away with only spending $15-20 on occasion, but I'd probably spend at least $50 most Sundays. At my house, we take turns buying kegs, and split the cost of food that we usually make at home, so I might average $15 per Sunday. Plus, I can lay down on my couch if I want, play with the dog, yell, scream, nap at will. And I have 100% control of the tv (station and volume).
  21. As of right now, all Comcast games are on EI. I'm not sure how the arrangement works though. That's not the question. I knew that. Did or could DirecTV customers in the Chicago area get Comcast Cub games on DirecTV? Will they still be able to if MLB EI goes exclusive on DirecTV? Shouldn't Comcast have a little say in that? Wouldn't that be sort of a conflict of interest? Yes, for Chicago area Comcast is part of the normal package. For all DirectTV customers, Comcast is part of the sports tier. Of course, if purchased on the sports tier, you do not get the games as they are blacked out unless you are an EI subscriber. In theory, comcast Inc, could choose to not allow CSN to be shown on directv, which would mean no directv subsribers could watch cubs games on CSN, whether they live in chicago or not. But the Cubs and MLB would be really pissed at comcast for that, and, comcast only owns 20% of CSN (the 4 non Bears teams own the other 80%). That's the kicker I think. Comcast couldn't just make that move on its own, and I don't see any of the partners agreeing.

  23. I'm not so sure of that. I think many fans have no idea of the breakdown of how the minors interact with MLB. I agree those guys would have mentioned it many times over but I really don't think the casual fan would know all the minor league info. Heck, I'm still learning stuff and I've been a fan for many a score! You don't need to know how it all works to know that Pujols was not Cubs property. If the guy cares enough about the Cubs to go to their website and ask Muskat a question, he's more than just a casual fan. A casual fan wouldn't even know who Pujols is. Huh?? Well, what' a casual fan? A guy who is investigating baseball cards on the internet, and sending in questions to the cubs website is not a casual fan. He's obviously very interested in the Cubs and has spent a lot of time and energy into his following of the team.
  24. And IMO it's arrogance like that that pisses people off. I agree it's your right to think it's an uneducated baseball question but like Edward K maybe this is their way to see the light. So we're concerned this guy won't join nsbb if we laugh at his stupid question?
  25. I see an obvious way around it. Addai and Rhodes have the benefit of playing with the Indy passing game. Benson and Jones do much of their work on their own. I think the Bears have a clear RB advantage, while Indy has a clear passing game advantage.
