  1. Six weeks from today, or six weeks of the season? A banged up Jones doesn't bother me, unless of course this is an attempt to hold-out without holding out. I wanted Benson starting anyway, in case he really is a franchise type back. Because I think TJ is just second tier. As long as he's back in time to contribute in the regular season, I don't care about this. I would be more concerned if somebody I projected as a starter missed time.
  2. Isn't that the case then of being prepared for injuries by constantly developing and bringing up young players that are capable of contributing? The Cubs chose not to develop position players. Their plan all along was to put almost 100% of their effort into building the farm through arms, even though young pitchers are the least dependable players in the game.
  3. Because he won't be available in the offseason.
  4. That's not a bad idea at all, except for the extra wear on arms that you'd like to be able to rest.
  5. It's pretty easy to get there from my office (in midtown), the issue is getting home (hoboken). But I normally don't let that stop me. I wouldn't have helped much. I'd say a couple things but I don't heckle. Usually it's just sit back, drink beers, eat peanuts and hot dogs, drink more beers, and BS with whomever I'm there with.
  6. I'd rather they do the first, as I believe that's the best way to win. But I know it's not the only way, and I believe they can still put up a championship caliber team with a few smart moves. Plus, I don't think the first option has more than a 5% chance of happening, so I'll live with the 2nd option.
  7. This just reminded me of something I watched for a while last night. Something like "decline of civilization: heavy metal". It was filmed in '88, I believe and had a lot of the people mentioned in the rock tournament. Anyway, they were talking about a club that had "dance contests" between some nasty hairsprayed drugged out chicks. One of the most drugged up ones was talking about the club and said this place is "classy. You might think Beverly Hills is classy, but it's got nothing on this place." I didn't watch much more after that.
  8. They need to unload spare parts and garbage. But unlike smaller market teams, they don't need to unload highly paid producers.
  9. How many runs did Hill give up again? Well, there were two starts where a good offense could have won, but to say that Hill hasn't been mostly at fault in his losses is a little bit of bias against dusty. When you have a ERA of over 9 in 8 starts it's a bit hard to blame the Cubs offense. Giving up 9 isn't any worse than getting shutout. On a personal level it sure is! If you're posting a 9 era you aren't giving your team a chance. If you are getting shutout you aren't giving your team a chance. Hill is guilty, but he's hardly the only one. Even though Dusty likes to single him out.

  11. My own personal deadline was a couple years ago. Speaking of deadlines, is it going to be like 3 pm Monday or something? I know they've changed it the past couple years.
  12. We won. First place in regular season and cruising through the playoffs. Not a very competitive coed league, lots of beer.
  13. Pierre was worse than Patterson of last year most of this season. And Jones is barely better than Burnitz, barely. Woulda coulda shoulda. This team sucks, it was constructed poorly and it's managed poorly.
  14. Well, it's coed, and heavily beer influenced. Pretty fun and not all that serious. It's been several years since I played 16 inch in junior high, which isn't a good idea when you're also playing little league at the same time. Screws with your swing.
  15. I'm not mistaking anything. This idea that the Cubs start rebuilding now by becoming buyers of high priced players is silly - no team is going to pay Abreu his current salary at 1/3 season for no reason whatsoever. You don't throw away 5 million dollars because you aren't patient enough to wait and rebuild during the offseason. Sorry, it just doesn't work that way. Why doesn't it? You have 2 options for improving the team, trades and free agency. Trades can be made prior to July 31st or after the playoffs. A team with money would be foolish to rule out the idea of trading for expensive/good players in the middle of the season just because they are out of it. There is a reason, the reason is you get the guy for next year, without having to offer up a 5 year 50 million contract or something similar. If you can take on the back end of a big contract for a good contract, it's a better deal than handing out a brand new contract that's much bigger in the offseason to a guy that is no better. And since there is no guarantee you can even get that free agent in the offseason (Hendry's track record is awful) you better be willing to deal before July 31.
  16. I sincerely doubt that. We were playing good baseball in April before Lee went down, and we didn't have Prior and Wood then. I think if everybody had been healthy, we'd been in the race. If the more likely option of just Prior and Wood on the DL, then we'd be around .500 right now. Look what happened to last year's team with a fully healthy Lee having a career year and Prior healthy for most of the season. The Sun Times has an excellent point. Injuries can make it difficult to be a 90+ win team (even though teams do it every year), but they are not an excuse to be a 20 games under .500 team.
  17. And you would be lucky to get that in return. There is no GM in baseball, except Hendry, that wants Rusch. Even the historically pitching poor Texas Rangers released his sorry...left arm. His left arm better be sorry for what it has done. He could always insist that another team take Rusch in a deal if they really want somebody else. Problem is, Hendry probably still thinks he did great with the Rusch deal, just like the Neifi deal.
  18. Monday: Cubs suck, not worth the hassle of going to queens. Tuesday: Cubs suck, softball playoffs. Wednesday: Cubs suck, not worth taking a vacation day. I actually had tickets to Tuesday's game (from work), but weather rescheduled our softball season and I wasn't going to miss the playoffs for this crappy team.
  19. am i missing a key reference that would make me laugh? or is this just ignorant drivel? It's the hot summer and Dusty doesn't think white people can handle the heat as well as darker skinned players.
  20. I didn't see the outing. Was the jam due to ground balls that found holes? If so, it doesn't make much sense to pull him. Grounds balls are good, even if they find holes from time to time. A ground ball single is really no different than a ground ball out hit at the same pace, in terms of how the pitcher and batter performed. It's a matter of chance whether or not it's stopped by a fielder.
  21. Yeah, I noticed that looking back at old minor league discussions. Maybe I'll wait to find out who pitches friday to make my decision.
  22. So he's a full-time catcher who plays inconsistantly, yet plays consistently enough to decline early? "Full-time" catcher isn't the same as a regular position player. They don't play everyday. It's exactly because of that beating their body takes.
  23. How about Saturday in Vegas? I might go, if I'm not stuck at the tables.
  24. That almost could have been called a foul bunt.
