  1. Getting nothing back would literally have been better. Thats a joke. I rather get something, rather than nothing for him. But Izturis is very bad and very expensive. You don't seem to understand that not all baseball players are better than average. The ones that are below average and make lots of money and play a lot negatively affect teams. Their teams would be better off just giving them away than playing them.
  2. Then he's an idiot (we already know that he is) because he's always been this bad.
  3. no salary in return. no crap players taking up roster spots in return. Yeah, I'm not complaining that they didn't get enough, I'm complaining that they actually made the team worse.
  4. I am going to go nuts listening to people sugar coat this piece of trash with that all star monikor. Do you realize how many truly awful players have made the all star team over the years? A lot. Including Izturies. Just because enough people were stupid enough to include him in the group doesn't mean he was worthy. He's awful, and he's pretty darn expensive. Rusch Izturiz Perez That's several million dollars dediced to some truly awful baseball players who could easily be replaced with a AAA reject. Think about that the next time the Cubs come up short a few million when trying to get a true impact bat. This is what Hendry does repeatedly, he wastes money, over and over, on crap players, so that when the time comes to get a good one, there is no money left.
  5. Wow, this just keeps getting worse and worse. They get worse offensively (Walker/Izturis) and throw away more money for possible improvements. Another day, another disaster. I really have no doubt that Hendry is doing some of this out of spite. He refuses to try and win any other way than with fast ball catchers and pitchers who walk everybody.
  6. The likelihood that Izturis will play a lot for the Cubs probably negates any value a prospect could bring, but I'm more than willing to be shown to be wrong if this is true. Although you are the first to say anything about another prospect.
  7. Man, the Cubs waste their time with trash while the Yankees just take good players for nothing. Chacon is crap, Wilson is more than servicable, and of course Abreu is very good.
  8. I take it back. I'd much rather have Maddux here to teach the young kids how to pitch, and Rich Hill isn't going to gain much by throwing another 10 starts either. Please Greg, forgive me and invoke a no trade clause or something.
  9. Surprised? Really? All Hendry cares about is ceiling. What he nevers gets is anybody capable of reaching their ceiling.
  10. Yep. Neifi starting at 2nd from now until the end of 2007 is the odds on favorite result of this deal, by a wide margin. No I think this signals we will go after Soriano this offseason hard. Maybe they'll go hard, but like with most big name free agents, they'll come up short. That will probably be a good thing though as Soriano will get way more money than he should.
  11. You know he's talking about Eric, right? Yes, my point is that it would be a big jump and they'll screw Eric up just like Corey if they bring him up. AA to the bigs isn't that big of a jump, and Eric is already older than Corey was at the time of his promotion. In addition to about the same amount of pro at bats, Eric has his college instruction as well. So he should be more seasoned/ready than Corey was. Not to say I'm gung-ho about a call-up.

  13. What a joke. Hendry couldn't give this guy away for the last year, and you're griping about who he got in return? I'm just happy he's gone and Dusty will play Theriot! (Or at least, he [expletive] better...) Then why in the hell won't you keep him? What's so wrong with Walker anyways? He bats almost 300 and we're going to play Perez at 2nd. Give me a break. No wonder why we're going to lose ninety games this year. Well then, isn't it time to think about and make trades for the future. Walker in the future equals nothing. Ceda will likely equal nothing as well, but might equal something. So Hendry trades nothing for a possible something and you throw a fit. Interesting. Well, Walker is still probably going to be better than any other 2B they'll have the next couple years. But the Cubs weren't going to bring him back anyway.
  14. Exactly. Why are people continuously thinking that a guy the Cubs signed for cheap and had no interest from teams 2 years ago, had no interest this offseason when the Cubs were knowingly trying to get rid of him, and has had a down power year was gonna bring back something of substance? Same with the Williamson deal. Hard to disagree, especially on the Williams deal. Have to agree here, but there is something to be said about how they once again negatively affected a guy's trading volume by talking so much about replacing him for a year. For every "we'll do what Greg wants" type of move, they crap on another player, which would negate any value in trying to become a destination for free agents. Not to mention, 3.75 years into his tenure and Baker hasn't brought in a single good free agent, despite that being one of his supposed assets. Perhaps all the dumping on guys they want to trade has hurt the team's ability to sign decent players.
  15. I've heard about this good relationship for a while, but I can't remember the last time the Cubs signed a Boras player to a team friendly deal. I'm guessing it's more about the fact that Hendry is willing to overpay for mediocrity, as opposed to getting involved with his impact clients. Boras will be friendly with anybody that meets his high demands.
  16. "Gooey sentimentality" is what makes sports fun. My job has no gooey sentimentality, and that's why people don't pay $50 for a seat watching people file reports in cubicles. I don't necessarily want a GM with too much of it, but if it didn't exist, what would be the point of watching sports? Isn't this supposed to be about fun? What's wrong with a little sentimentality? it's more fun watching good teams than teams i want to hug and write poems about. Feel free to prove that the Cubs would suddenly go from a team that hasn't won in 95 years to a good team by trading one guy for a "C" prospect. It wouldn't be sudden, but it would mostly be about giving a chance to young pitchers instead of wasting more time with him in that slot. That's the type of move that good teams make. Good teams don't make sentimental decisions, they make efficient "how does this affect the team" moves.
  17. What an uninspiring deal for Boston. That's the ultimate, "try and go 6 innings without giving up more than 5 runs" type of move.
  18. Fans can have it, but no personel decisions should be made based, at all, on such feelings.
  19. Yeah, I am as well, but I think Hendry has this wierd hangup about trading prospects for veterans in a down year, because it's just not what losing teams do. I can't imagine a Hill for another prospect deal working out, but I was thinking another team with financial issues wouldn't mind trying to work a cheap Hill into their rotation next year.
  20. Is that because you mistakenly believe the young pitcher could get only 5 starts out of that open slot?
  21. A) There are a lot of starts left this season to get a good idea. B) The fact that they may or may not be ready is why you give them the chance, to get a better idea of if they will be ready by next year.
  22. $9 million good? If he wanted to come back at $750,000 to be that 5th starter, fine, but the problem is Hendry feels obligated to pay him for what he used to be, as opposed to what he is currently. And people will worry about the "slight" of offering what he's actually worth. Waste several million on Maddux and you are going to have a tough time filling the many other needs this team has to fill. Just like wasting money on Rusch and Neifi makes it difficult to find actual producers. Oh no...not at $9 million. Never in a zillion years. Bring him back at a greatly reduced rate. You don't have that option. Maddux isn't going to sign at a salary that accurately reflects his contribution to the team.
  23. That's my point. Allowing emotions to determine personel moves is a great way to ruin a franchise. The smart thing is to look for 2007, and keeping Maddux around stifles 2007. Hill is only getting starts because Marshall isn't. Dusty is looking for any excuse to pull the plug after 1 or 2 outings. And since when does 2 months of baseball equal 5 starts for a pitcher? If Hill gets 4 days rest after every outing, he could get 12 more starts this season, which would blow away the "opportunity" he's been given so far in his career. I care about the Cubs. It's been cool getting to watch Maddux and he's an amazing pitcher. But he hasn't been good since returning to the team and his only value to this team would be as trade bait.
