  1. That's a good point. I'm not trying to say he's having an amazing power year. He's down. He's not the player he was at his peak. But he's still good and it's completely asinine to say all he does is walk. Bobby Abreu would improve this team a significant amount. Cost is an issue, but when measured against other potential acquisitions, it's not that big of an obstacle. I think earlier in this thread or in another it says Abreu is demanding his option be picked up and he be given and extnesion if traded to the Yankees, with a chance to win a WS this year! if that's the case, I don't see him allowing a trade to the Cubs without an extension, and if that's the case, getting Abreu would be a huge mistake, don't you agree? Signing him to the equivalent of a 5/65 would be a mistake. But picking up his option would not bother me in the least. I see very little out there that could help this team if they choose to ignore this opportunity. He's not the most cost-effective option, but he's one of the few that actually improve the team.
  2. http://www.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/Music/07/28/metallica.itunes.ap/index.html LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Hard rockers Metallica, who long refused to make available individual songs from its albums for sale online, has begun doing so on the iTunes Music Store. Beginning on Tuesday, the band put up four of its records _ "Kill 'Em All," "Ride The Lightning," "Master of Puppets" and "...And Justice For All" -- for sale on U.S. and Canadian versions of the popular online music retailer. Fans may buy tracks a la carte for 99 cents or purchase the albums, starting at $9.90.
  3. That, and the fact that they are better. Police was mildly entertaining, but they do not deserve to win 3 rounds of this tourny.

  5. It's called marketing to a large group of consumers. It would be stupid not to, and it's stupid to bring politics into this topic.
  6. What's with this "all he does is walk" crap? He's still hitting .280, higher than all but 3 Cubs, and has 35 XBH, more than all but 2 Cubs.
  7. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2532028 I thought I'd read somewhere that the Bears weren't interested in Lelie. Lovie has said that he likes what he has in Moose, Bradley, Currie, et al. Wanny said all the pieces are in place. Coaches and GMs generally say they like what they have. If you hear Lovie speak, he has something positive to say about everybody. But I'd bet they realize WR is still an issue. They just don't want to panic about it, that would be bad for team morale, bad for PR and bad for negotiating purposes.
  8. Never know, Brenly won a WS before he came here, as a color man. I would not be surprised at all if Dusty is ignored by other teams. His price tag is extremely high. I think only Torre makes more money (think about that one). No small market team is going to come calling, and he probably wouldn't be interested. Most big market teams are pretty stable right now in terms of manager. More and more teams are moving toward a more modern way of running things, and Dusty wouldn't stand a chance with those franchises. I think that if he wanted another job, he could eventually get one. But nobody is going to go after him like Hendry did, and he won't have the pick of the litter.
  9. I think my brain knew, but my heart was really trying to convince me something would be done to make this team better.
  10. They shouldn't have to trade guys to open up some playing time for somebody else. This isn't a fraternity house where seniority determines everything. This is a professional organization that should make any and all decisions based on what is best for the team. What is best for the team is working for next year, so if Rusch, Neifi, Nevin etc. need to sit for a kid, then that is what should be done. You don't sacrifice your team's development simply because you feel obligated to play older players. The be nice to veterans strategy has done absolutely nothing to attract impact free agents to this team.
  11. Stability is overrated. How many WS champs this decade won after the same GM and same manager were in place for 4 years? None I'd guess. Most of the recent WS winning managers won in their first or second year with the team. I see some value in stability of a GM, because a GM's job is about developing the organization, which takes time. But managers are a dime a dozen and can and should be tossed aside if they don't win in the first couple years. A failing business doesn't improve its prospects by keeping the same people in charge that led the business into failure. You don't improve as a student by using the same study techniques you used when failing classes. A losing team that preaches stability is only going to maintain the status quo and keep losing.
  12. How many times does this question have to be asked and answered? The answer is simple. First, you get rid of the cancer that is Dusty and his staff, which has done nothing but tear down this team and it's players for years now. You get rid of his philosophies and coaching styles. The excuses stop, the attitude changes and you basically just clean-up the huge mess he made. 2nd, you stop wasting time with pieces of trash like Rusch and Neifi consstantly being used because they are the manager's pets. 3rd, you reliever the strain on overworked arms because the manager is so desperate to win today that he'll risk the health of any pitcher he has at his disposal. 4th, you start evaluating for next year, something that cannot be done with Dusty, because he is stuck in the past and refuses to think about next year. When you decide to make a change (which the Cubs should have done a long time ago), you make that change immediately, so the lame duck authority figure cannot do anymore damage and you can start fresh.
  13. No, they'd wait for the best PC time to announce it, like they did with Hendry's contract after they started the season relatively well. The wheels came off right after that announcement, which was entirely too early for a "let's wait and see how the season comes along" timeline.
  14. Bottom line, wins and losses don't matter to this organization. It's about doing it their way, if that doesn't work, ignore opportunities to get better and keep doing the same thing that led to failure. Stubborn ignorance.
  15. http://www.weather.com/weather/map/USIL0225?clip=686&region=null&collection=localwxforecast&presname=Chicago,%20IL%20Forecast&name=index_large_animated&day=1 Nasty stuff north and south of the field. http://image.weather.com/web/radar/us_ord_closeradar_plus_usen.jpg
  16. What sort of positive stuff would you like them to make up? I'd rather hear the truth, which is entirely negative.
  17. The fact that they would let him manage out the season can only mean they want him back, and it's just a matter of Dusty accepting. There's just no way they would let him manage out the season if they intended to let him walk. So for me, what matters is him staying on right now, because after that decision, the rest is inevitable.
  18. Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised of that at all.
  19. Pierre is only a "true leadoff hitter" because some people like to label leadoff hitters based on speed. I, for one, haven't been lamenting the lack of true leadoff hitters. But if I was, Pierre wouldn't fit the bill. If there is any such thing as a true leadoff hitter, it's somebody who takes a lot of pitches, gets on 40% of the time, and steals lots of bases without getting caught. But there aren't many of those. I'd much rather take a slower player that gets on base more often (and gets picked off less frequently).
  20. IP would be way down that list. And instead of W/L I think they concentrate more on win totals. 20-12 would get more credit than 14-2.
  21. Isn't that how we ended up with Jones, waiting until it was too late? If Abreu's available now, he won't be in October. Any team currently in the race that can afford him will keep him for next year. Next year isn't the issue - it's the option for the for the following year that has all teams balking. If you're trading for Abreu, you are commiting to 2.5 years at ~$35 million. And if you sign Lee or Soriano you could be talking about much more. The one thing the Cubs have is some money to spend. Not a lot of talent to trade, but they have money to spend. If you can get a guy by basically agreeing to pay his salary, and if his contract is not long in duration (Andy and Jim always prefer shorter deals to longer ones) then you've got to look into it. He's only overpaid by a couple million, which is no more than how much Rusch or Neifi are overpaid. I'd much rather overpay for a guy who has a chance to contribute something great (Abreu's likely .400+ OBP is just that) than for guys who suck.
  22. Top hitting catchers have drawn significant interest in the past. Maybe nobody feels the need to upgrade that position right now, but your comparison to tallest midget is absurd. 900+ OPS is a 900+ OPS. There is a wide disparity in catcher production across the league, with just as many teams getting over 800 OPS as teams getting under 700.
  23. Because he won't be available in the offseason. I'm not convinced Philly will move him. Teams aren't willing to give up the asking price at this stage, and on top of that, Abreu will demand that extra year on the contract. I'd be surprised if he wasn't still a Philly come October. Then the Cubs could make a solid run at him. I'm the opposite, I'd be surprised if he isn't moved, but then again, I've been predicting Philly would eventually try to deal him for a year and a half now. If he isn't moved until November, no harm then. But if he goes elsewhere for little value, that's a huge mistake by Hendry. Enough of this waiting it out garbage, you have to aggressively go after players that can help you, not wait to see who is left when the dust settles.
  24. He also said something about Betemit to NY yesterday, but acted as if they could get him for nothing. I would be upset if the Yanks get Abreu for fringe prospects. The Cubs should be all over that type of deal.
