  1. I doubt you heard that. Even if somebody offered more (doubtful since Jim locked him up right away) that doesn't mean he's not overpaid. A terrible SS doesn't deserve $5m guaranteed. To be honest with you, I have heard it numerous times from David Kaplan. Even if you did, that doesn't mean he's not overpaid. He does nothing for this team and is paid a lot. But I still have my doubts that anybody was offering more than 2/5 for that piece of trash who was released the year before. Only the dumbest GMs in the league would consider such a move.
  2. I thought you were kidding before. But you actually think this? I don't care what Dodgers fans think. They are probably the same type of fans that think the White Sox won with small ball last year. They're just lapping up the rhetoric coming from Lasorda. Izturis sucks. He's exactly the type of player that has been holding the Cubs back. The Cubs need massive offensive improvement, and starting pitching. They do not need another all glove no stick middle infielder. Lots of people want to claim you don't need production out of the middle infield (as if this is still 1987), but all the good teams are getting something out of one of their middle infielder positions, if not both. And if they aren't getting great OPS, they are at least getting servicable OBP, not the sub .300 crap the Cubs are content to go to work with.

  4. Bottom of the order? Cesar is hitting second, dude. All hail Cesar! Haha. When they see him hit 2nd this year, they'll have to reconsider. They saw Neifi do it a lot and don't seem to have any second thoughts.
  5. I know he wasn't worth more, my problem is that getting back nothing would have been better than this. Izturis costs a lot of money to do the same thing Neifi does, which is hurt the ballclub offensively. The Cubs don't need any more drags on their scoring ability.
  6. Exactly what everyone said after every move in the offseason. It doesn't matter if it's the first or the final, it's bad. I'm certain it's not the final move. Obviously he's going to do more before April, but that's just the problem, he keeps making the team worse.
  7. Because his thoughts on the game were formulated years ago, and they have not evolved. He bought into all the cliches about defense winning championships, and just putting the ball in play being most important. He believes this stuff, regardless of the results.
  8. Other teams play random day games during the week, and many play during the day Saturday and Sunday. Plus, others, who aren't used to it, have to come into Chicago and play them. If Walker is blaming it on the one bad day's sleep, then why aren't visiting teams having the same problem? This topic is as pathetic as goat talk. The Cubs suck because they make bad personel decisions, not because of day games. They've been playing more and more at night in recent years and have gotten worse.
  9. I don't get why you think this is the case. What makes you think he was after Izturis before? He was hard after Furcal, but I don't recall anything about Izturis.
  10. I hate that low expectations are considered acceptable when it comes to this team. I expected very little, but got less.
  11. not every player hits his prime at the same time. back to the visquel comparison again, omar didnt hit his prime offensively until 1996 when he was 29. Not every, but the vast majority. Hoping for a diamond in the rough, and paying a small fortune for the right to rely on nothing but hope doesn't seem very wise to me.
  12. He also had 260 more plate appearances. details details details. He had a .311 OBP in the minors, taking just 113 walks in well over 2200 at bats. He's taken just 116 walks in over 2300 major league at bats. Corey Patterson took 107 walks in less than 1400 minor league at bats, and 126 in 2500 career at bats. There is no marked improvement in Izturis's patience. He's always been worthless at the plate and likely always will be.
  13. Not unless the current people do some serious soul searching and say, "You know what? The way we're doing things just isn't working, and it leads only to hit-and-miss results." That hasn't happened yet. Great job as always, Bruce. You are truly a beacon of light in an increasingly dense fog. Your co-hort, Barry Rozner's column was laughable today. Rozner's only concerns appears to be the happiness of Greg Maddux. I've never noticed such blatant sycophantic journalism in the sports world, outside of a Derek Jeter article. Several times a year he writes about how great Maddux is and about the Cubs responsibility to do right by Maddux. Imrem's take was interesting in comparison.
  14. Park factors come into play here. Neifi has not been a more productive career hitter than Izturis. But it's sickeningly close. Career OPS+ Neifi: 65 Izturis: 69 True, but that includes Neifi's 3 or so productive years in the prime of his career. Yes, he did have a couple-his OPS from 1997 and 2001 would be 8th among shortstops this year, and his OPS from 2000 was an average shortstop. The Neifi that of today is a shell of that average shortstop Neifi, and Izturis had career path numbers pre-injury to be better than Neifi at any point in his career. You are talking about Coors Field Perez, when his OPS+ (adjusted for park factors) were still in the 60-70 range. The Neifi of today is very much like the Neifi of yesteryear, which is to stay, he's always stunk and he still stinks.
  15. Izturis wasn't highly thought of for his offense, he was lauded for his defense. Barrett actually did a lot of good things later in his minor league career, putting up an OPS around 900 in AA and AAA. Barrett also didn't have a degenerative injury nor did he undergo Tommy John surgery. Plus, Izturis isn't about to enter his prime, he's already in it.
  16. What? Out of 50 players who have played shortstop this year, Ronny is dead last in offensive production (measured by VORP). Last. He can only improve, but what are his chances of becoming a "standout" at a position in which more offensive production is expected? The point is they don't care about offense. It's manly to talk tough on defense, whereas offense if for pretty boys. Tough teams defend, and there's no better market than Chicago to play up the defense concept, regardless of the sport, or the relative value of defense in that sport.
  17. I'm not getting that hunch, but I could see it. Assuming Ramirez and Pierre get raises, and they sign some expensive, yet ineffective innings eater for the rotation, I'm guessing they spread the remaining cash around to a mediocre left fielder or a mediocre second baseman, plus a very bad veteran for the bench. Maybe Blanco gets a raise as well.
  18. I like that he takes the blame, but I don't like what he follows that up with. Hendry has been taking blame a lot the past couple years, but he doesn't do a thing to fix the problems, he just gets different versions of the same thing. He seems to realize he's not making the right moves, but doesn't seem to realize the reason why those moves repeatedly fail. He doesn't learn from his mistakes because he doesn't think he made any. It's like a running back who carries the ball in one hand fumbling, and then apologizing for not holding onto the ball tighter with that one hand. Or a basketball player who apologizes for missing a ridiculous impossible to make shot, but then attempts to fix the problem by practicing the ridiculous impossible to make shot and using it in games. Or a baseball player who apologizes for striking out, then solves the problem by grounding out to the 2nd baseman.
  19. I think the huckster Lasorda loved him, but I don't think Coletti did.
  20. They probably do need to, but they won't be able to, unless Ramirez leaves, but the Soriano would be needed just to keep the team as bad as it already is.
  21. What I'm most upset about is that it remains clear that Hendry still doesn't understand the problem on this team. It's hard to fix a problem, when you don't know it exists, and Hendry apparantly has no idea that this team's biggest problem is the inability/unwillingness to take walks, which leads to lower OBP and the worst run scoring team in the majors. Following close behind is the lack of power and all the pitching problems. But he hasn't done a thing to improve either of those in years either.
  22. Pierre's defense is fine, he doesnt' have the best arm but what you want from CF is range. Barrett's defense is another story though. What you want is a guy who can take the right route to the ball, cover ground and throw. Pierre can only do one of those three.
  23. What did he do then? He created an 88 win team, the same win total from 2 year before. Big freaking deal. I didn't say there is nothing in his past. I said there is nothing in his past that indicates he can make the moves that will make this team a winner. That team was already in place, including a HOF corner OF and several great young pitchers (before he allowed the manager to abuse the crap out of them). This team needs a ton of work, and what it needs most is OBP. Jim refuses to get OBP, so we know that won't be addressed. He didn't prove me wrong, he actually lived up to my worst nightmares by hiring Dusty Baker, ignoring the value of walks, sticking with antiquated baseball theories that have since been proven wrong..... etc. Jim started making mistakes at the beginning, only the mistakes just kept getting worse and worse. It's a downward trend that shows no signs of abating.
