    Sounds precautionary. I hope. This is why you keep TJ for one more season. Say what you want folks. We still don't know what we really have in Benson. Not until he puts in a full, solid season. I'd trade TJ for some bigtime draft picks, but if that's not possible, I'm all for keeping him. I'm still not convinced Peterson would be a great #2. I think he's good for a game or two a year, but not much else.

    If he can't crack next year's starting rotation, he better be in next year's bullpen. He'll be 25 and will have spent 3 years on the 40 man roster. Time to get some value out of the guy. There's nothing to gain with him starting in the minors next year.

    11/08. Hmm, baseball-reference has 11/14 listed. every news article says 11/08. The actual signing date may have been after the agreement, which could be the difference.

    6 under .500, 5.5 games back, 6 teams ahead of them, a consistent history of coming up short late in the season. It doesn't seem strange to me at all. They aren't good, and their fans realize it.

    ARod, Jeter, Ichiro, Ortiz, Utley, Beltran, Soriano, Rolen, Glaus, Aramis and DLee, Vladdy, Abreu and Helton. Webb, Carpenter, Halliday, Lackey, Santana, Oswalt, Zito There's a lot of talent in that age range. But yeah, teams realized that not all prospects are suspects, and that trading for a marginal veterans isn't the answer to your pennant dreams.

    Every Philly fan I know gave up on this season long ago, and have been calling for an overhaul for a long time. I doubt many are upset or think management threw in the towel too soon (although they should be upset that they got nothing for Abreu).

If there's been no marked improvement in his patience, then why did his walks improve from 14 in his first full (age 22) season to 45 in his last full (age 24) season? Because of the bolded part. Fair enough, but his walk rate doubled during that time. From non-existent to very low.

    Not any good teams have two bats as weak as those in their middle infield. I think Izturis and Cedeno could out-produce Ellis and Crosby in Oakland this year. I know it's the exception rather than the norm, but it is possible. I think there are multiple contenders who are in the neighborhood of a .700 OPS and it's really not a huge difference in the long haul if you're at .650 instead. Of course we need a major upgrade in the outfield spots to be able to hide that at all. OBP is the more important of the two components of OPS, and these guys are both sub .300 OBP guys. Oakland really isn't a good team, they are just the best of a bad division. They are only on pace for 85 wins. Good teams, teams that want to win 90+ games a year and be real contenders, don't go into the season with the ineptitude at both middle infield spots that the Cubs currently have.

    Um, you're nuts. Mets fans have loved Reyes for a long time. But the only reason people think he is that good is because the other 7 spots in the lineup are great. Umm...I have relatives that a major Mets fans and trust me last year he was not loved! Um, I live and work around thousands of Mets fans and trust me, last year he was loved.

    Um, you're nuts. Mets fans have loved Reyes for a long time. But the only reason people think he is that good is because the other 7 spots in the lineup are great.

    Not any good teams have two bats as weak as those in their middle infield. The Cardinals have had two bats in the middle infield that aren't to a 700 OPS all season. Eckstein's pretty consistent .350+ OBP is the difference here. Good teams get something out of the middle infield offensively. The Cubs have nothing.

    Neifi Perez was freaking fantastic for a month in 2004 and a month in 2005. Doesn't mean a thing. Izturis has always sucked, and will likely always suck, even if he has an occasional hot streak.

    I would hope Maddux doesn't return, since he wasn't good but paid a lot of money. I'd have rather gotten nothing at all, rather than Izturis. Cesar isn't some cheap young kid who the Cubs can take a flyer on. He's an expensive player who has always sucked and likely always will, and he is guaranteed a lot of money next year. So unless Hendry trades him away, he will be here, hurting the offense that can't take anymore low OBP players than it already has.

    In comparison, yes. Same crap player, less expensive. In reality no, I wouldn't want Neifi, nor his clone Izturis, anywhere near that role.

    No, you are supporting the Neifi deal. That's exactly what you did when you tried to claim he's not overpaid.

This hurts the team. I'd have taken a C prospect who doesn't even affect the organization. Who did you want to play SS next year? How do questions like this address the issue? Who else did you want to play? What else did you want for Maddux? If you are going to go with no production at SS, you might as well pay minimum wage (Cedeno) and spend money on other positions. If you are going to spend money on SS, you better get some production. Izturis is expensive and a drag on the offense. This offense can't afford anymore "contributors" who cannot get on base. Why is this so complicated for people?

    There's no way in hell they can afford Soriano and Lee after resigning Pierre and Ramirez and paying Izturis. You'll get a crap 2nd baseman and mediocre left fielder if you get anything at all. And an expensive ineffective innings eater.
