  1. He's only done that twice in his career, 2001 and 2004. And each time he had just 506 PA. He needs to average 3.3 per game to get there, and each off day will make it all the more difficult. It would be so Cubs like to have back to back batting title champs on worthless teams, seeing as how they are so enamored with batting average but completely oblivious to the more important aspects of the game which are necessary to actually win.
  2. I would refute that. I've seen some bad play. He takes bad routes, gets bad jumps, and has dropped balls in his glove on multiple occasions. And the arms thing is much more than a small thing, guys take extra bases all the freaking time.
  3. The defensive improvement might not be as dramatic as you'd think. Jones' defense has been declining pretty quickly. That's not to say he'd be a liability, but he's not close to what he was in the late 90's. It's still the type of defensive improvement I'd like, one that comes with good offense.
  4. My dislike for Pierre goes beyond his disastrous April and May, and is based on a career of not goodness. I think he is going to be incredibly overpaid due to the fact that so many baseball people feel the need to have a stereotypical leadoff hitter, instead of the 8 best hitters (9 for AL) you can find. I'm not sure what he'd have to do, but his numbers would have to be much much higher than they are now to have me think of bringing him back. And/or his cost would have to go down.
  5. ??? After the year in the pen, Morris came back to win 22 and then 17 games while increasing his Ks and holding steady on WHIP. The Cubs should have done the same with Kerry in 2000, and definitely should have from day 1 this year. My bad. You're right. I forgot about his first full season back. I think the offense he was surrounded with helped his 17 win season, though. Anybody remember Matt Morris criticizing the Cubs for rushing Wood back at the time? I was in "defend the Cubs against all naysayers" mode, and didn't have much concern for pitcher abuse, etc. Oops.
  6. I'd hardly consider the above two games blowouts. There were others that I wouldn't consider blowouts, but especially these two. If you factor these games in, he's given up 11 runs in 38.2 innings. Still much better than his overall numbers, but not as good as the picture you painted. We're talking about the Cubs offense, down 4, that late, it's a blowout.
  7. I don't know if it's the closer mentality, or if it's a case of splits. When he is used in blowouts he is expected to go an inning, or more, regardless of the hitters. In a tight game, he's brought in to face a lefty, which is his job.
  8. It's funny you say that. I've followed the Tigers my whole life and they are pretty much the team Hendry wants. The Tiger team OBP is not great. They don't like to walk a lot. Their batting average is pretty high and the OBP they do have is driven by that average. The Tigers pitching is awesome, best ERA in baseball right now, and their defense is pretty solid (Brandon Inge, horrible hitter for a 3rd baseman, has a fine glove). This, to me, is Hendry's dream team. All I can do is hope the Tigers keep it up and the Cubs can find that type of success with the same plan for the next couple of years. That's just it, when has our pitching been great? When have we combined great pitching with great defense? I wouldn't have a problem with a free-swinging team, as long as the team swings at strikes vs. b.s. breaking balls in the dirt or eight inches outside or fastballs eye-high. I will always have a problem with a free swinging team. But I could live with it if those free swingers were freaking studs, instead of the garbage Hendry puts out there. Odds are, if they are free swingers but don't swing at balls in the dirt, etc, that probably means the pitchers realize they can't do any damage and will just ground out anyway.

This, to me, is Hendry's dream team. All I can do is hope the Tigers keep it up and the Cubs can find that type of success with the same plan for the next couple of years. I don't want that to happen. If the Tigers win and Hendry feels more faith in his plan, he'll just keep going on the wrong route. That's just an inefficient way to build a team. Hitting for average is just way too unpredictable, while relying so heavily on pitching has already cost the Cubs big time.
  10. Yeah, I feel like Hendry's reaction would be, "My team is out of it this year, obviously this is a move that a contending team should make."
  11. I'd like for the Cubs to find out -- unfortunately, I think re-signing Juan Pierre is more in line with what this front office is trying to do..... which is suck IMO. I could see them resign Pierre, and play him in left. He's only got 1 year left on his contract.
  12. BRISTOL, CT—A week after firing Harold Reynolds for sexual harassment, ESPN reported that the Baseball Tonight analyst failed a routine daily-interaction-with-women test, and alleged that an unusually high level of testosterone in Reynolds' body was responsible for his shocking come-from-behind performance. "Although it is unclear whether Harold was taking any extra testosterone, his actions indicate that he is unable to even handle the level of testosterone normally present in his system," said Dr. Jerry Alderson, chairman of the World Anti-Groping Agency. "Nobody wants this kind of player in the workplace." Reynolds could not be reached for comment, but is reportedly seeking a job at Fox Sports Network's Best Damn Sports Show Period.
  13. The only thing incredible about Queen was their incredible lack of incredibleness.
  14. Well, when you put it that way.... They've refunded in the past, even if you left early. I know the Yankees have, on occasion, done the same thing, even to people who never even tried to go to the game but had unused tickets.
  15. Hendry is much more of a trading guy than a free agent guy, unless you're talking relievers and bench players. I can't see him signing 2 regulars, and I'd be surprised if he signed 1.
  16. They aren't giving refunds to people who left early?
  17. I'm not sure about that. You could make an argument that the Cubs owe him a chance to make up for the likelihood that it was Dusty's abuse in 2003 that lead to his injuries the past few years (remember, he didn't miss a single start in 2002 or 2003; it was after Dusty abused his starters in 2003 that both Wood and Prior were injured more). IMO, Kerry's arm and shoulder problems have nothing to do with 2003 overuse (which to me is a debatable question anyway), but rather, his terrible throwing form. To claim that they have nothing to do with it is as big of a stretch as saying they are 100% the cause. I would say it's very likely that his mechanics and the overuse combined to ruin his arm.
  18. The great thing is, we've got another 4-5 hours of this to sit through.
  19. Atlanta would probably pull him back. If they were looking to trade with Boston, they probably don't have any interest in a trade from the Cubs, and I'm not sure Hendry has any interest in matching the Red Sox offer. This would just annoy both the Boston GM and Atlanta GM, since the Cubs have nothing to gain by blocking and no realistic chance to trade with Atlanta. Hendry should look into it though, and if he gets a sense that Atlanta would let him go for nothing, or make a trade that helps the Cubs, go for it.
  20. I just noticed Dusty had a chance to make a double switch last inning, but passed, to go with the more traditional, just pinch hit for the reliever next inning. Of course, Aardsma hasn't pitched in several days, so this would have actually been a good time to double switch him in so as to avoid overtaxing the bullpen in the first game of a double header.
  21. I don't think either one of them will get that much money or that many years. Soriano might get a 4 year deal, but I think Lee will probably get 3 years. Lee is going to get 4 easily, and I'd be surprised if Soriano was under 5, unless it's for a higher than expected salary. Not many 30 year olds with the hyep of these guys are signing for less than 3 years, unless they have injury issues. They will be 2 of the 4 biggest signing next offseason and the market has proven capable of absorbing at least that many big, longterm deals during the winter.
  22. As others have noted, the thread title is "realistic" roster. Izturis is here to stay, whether I like it or not. If I'm making my own team I'd see what Baltimore would want for Tejada, and throw Izturis into the deal. But realistically, he's the SS in 2007 and, most likely, 2008.
  23. A little overly positive in my opinion. The guy just wrote down every glowing statement made by the coaching staff. Don't get me wrong, I like the Bears chances, and this guy makes some good points. But not everything is going to go as well as he makes it out to be, otherwise this team is going 19-0.
  24. Seriously, Queen? That's just silly.
