  1. Speaking of streaking. Post ASB, Juan Pierre is hitting .280/.330/.410, a respectable line for a bench player, or 7 hole hitting rookie making $350,000. But hardly anything you'd like to see from your everday leadoff hitter, not to mention a guy making millions who is thought to be in line for a 3/$24-30m deal in the offseason. His overall line still sucks, .276/.323/.372, and that hot July is a thing of the past. Juan is going to finish the season with bad numbers, there is simply nothing more to say about that fact. The only hope is that Hendry judges him on some random stat like runs scored, which the every single freaking game in the leadoff spot Pierre is on pace for a measly 80, a truly pathetic total. 2005 Cubs leadoff hitters scored more than that. 5 NL teams have already scored more than that from the leadoff spot.
  2. Respectable to me is a very bad goal to set. Respectable reaks of mediocrity, and appreciating respectability is akin to accepting mediocrity. Even if they finish 82-80, what would be a strong finish, this season would be a disaster. You can't just judge a season based on how you play the last two months. Games in April, May and June count, even though the Cubs often downplay the risk of losing lots of them. A "respectable" finish to 2006 is only going to mean sustained mediocrity, which is going to keep this team locked into the cycle of mediocrity that has plagued them for so many years.
  3. Before you read the quote, just note this little fact. Since the all star break, Neifi Perez is hitting .255/.250/.298. Now for the quote: Yeah, the reason the Cubs have been winning is in part due to the fact that Neifi is scorching. While that 548 OPS might actually seem hot for Neifi, it actually isn't. Dusty's quote either means he doesn't know what hot means, has extremely low expecations for Neifi Perez that would mean a 548 OPS was hot, or he's just dumb as a box of rocks and doesn't know jack squat about baseball. The only other explanation is that he's got an unjustified man love for Neifi Perez and felt obligated to include him in a list of players that actually have been producing lately. It's not like he included everybody in the list, guys like Mabry and Nevin weren't included, not to mention Ronny, whose post ASB OPS is 096 points higher than Neifi's. Oh, by the way, Jacque's line post all star: .229/.273/.398. Ramirez, Barrett and Murton are legitimately hot, with 1000+ OPS since the ASB. Pagan is pretty good with a 859, which is very similar to Nevin and Mabry.
  4. Randy Winn was not chump change. He had a 117 OPS+ that season, hitting .298/.360/.461 in 675 PA.
  5. I seem to remember Gonzalez dropping a routine DP in game 6 of the NLCS. Yeah, I guess defense isnt important. And yet Gonzo was considered a good defender by most, which would seem to indicate that even if you get good defenders they aren't going to win you games with the glove.
  6. Oh man, now you did it! Shhh! doesn't matter, he's a cub... he's bound to suffer some debilitating injury at some point Unless he's traded, then of course there is a Cy Young in his future... Or they could provide him with solid coaching and attempt to lessen the risk for injury via cautious usage patterns and he could become a solid health pitcher for the Cubs.
  7. This thought crossed my mind as well. Was he saying "we aren't in that mode" about trading prospects for a manager? Hmmm...that quote seemed clear when I first read it...now it looks a bit more vague. Stupid rosy glasses. The writer presented it so as to clearly make a connection between the two, but who knows what question he actually asked to elicit that answer. Even if the question was "Have you considered trading prospects for Joe Girardi", he could have issued that answer as a direct response to the idea of a trade, or a more general notion of not looking at anybody else right now.
  8. This thought crossed my mind as well. Was he saying "we aren't in that mode" about trading prospects for a manager? Or was he saying we aren't in the looking for a new manager mode? It's not like the Cubs have been banned from talking about the manager position this year, they've addressed it quite frequently. Simply saying a word on the topic isn't enough for me to think much of anything.
  9. It will take a lot more than just a little more patience for Harvey. It will take a complete reworking of his approach. He's brutal, just plain awful. EPatt is a good prospect, far from great, but Harvey hardly even ranks as a prospect anymore as pathetic as his professional results have been so far. Guys who strike out all the time, never, walk, and don't produce, just don't pan out.
  10. I passionately agree.
  11. Hendry would go out and pick up a bunch of guys who have high OBPs...but only thanks to their high batting averages. Nope. No more facial hair.
  12. Dopirak: Sept. 2007 if he repeats at AA and has a good season, otherwise sometime in 2008. EPatt: Sometime next season. Harvey; I don't think he'll make it to the bigs as a hitter, even with his hot July and August. But I expect he'll be at AA next season. I have read several times on this bd. that EPatt isn't ready to assume full-time duties next season, hence the acquisition of Izturis. Is this your assessment as well? Is he therefore just trade bait? He probably could do it and post numbers similar to what I expect Izturis to do, but *I* think EPatt will need at least a half season at AAA and some time to get accustomed to the big leagues. I'd rather have him than Izturis by the end of next season and definitely 2008 and on. Izturis is SS, Patterson is 2B. I don't think Cesar's acquisition has any bearing the Patterson's future.
  13. The only way the Yankees won't pay him is if somebody else is willing to give him something crazy. So, the only way to outbid them is to probably bid as high as or higher than what Zito and Schmidt will get. A 2 year $16m deal isn't going to get it done.
  14. That was bittersweet for me. I spent all season watching on satellite or listening on the internet. Saturdays were the only problem because of the stupid blackout rules, and east coast Fox affiliates never showed Cubs games. I went to a sports bar with lots of tvs to try and see this one, and it wasn't on. I had to follow on my freaking phone that day.
  15. The Yankees don't take walks. This article made me cry. Abreu has been too modest to take credit for anything other than his own at-bats. But he does admit a fondness for long plate appearances. "I've always been patient," he said, adding that the more pitches he sees, "the better I can see the rotation of the ball. That helps me make adjustments in that at-bat and other [upcoming at-bats]."
  16. Does that change at all given that he hasn't been on the DL at all this year? If he completes this season healthy, I think he could easily take his place again as the top arm in the system. I think it would change, but the problem would not completely disappear. He'll have to improve his 2006 numbers before I'd vault him to the top of any list (aside from the most upside list, which he mostly likely leads).
  17. They will either pick up the option or sign him to a new deal. Perfect timing for a resurgent year after back to back bad seasons (actually, average, but bad for a highly paid supposed "ace"). If they do then this idea is moot, but if they don't he'd look great as our 2nd or 3rd starter. He'll be 38 before next season, and has been very mediocre the past two seasons, and has health issues. He would be a very risky signing and will be very expensive.
  18. Sounds like the Rich Hill discussions a few months back. when has Guzman dominated at Iowa? He's got a great k/bb ratio, and decent WHIP at Iowa. He hasn't "accomplished" anything in the majors because he's had 6 whole starts, like Rich did when people were ready to give him away for a bag of baseballs. And his overall minor league numbers have been great.
  19. NO. The wave is pointless and stupid. The only way I'd agree that it's getting too much pub is the realization that now more people know it happened. But once it's out, it's out, and we must do what we can to stop this from happening again.
  20. They will either pick up the option or sign him to a new deal. Perfect timing for a resurgent year after back to back bad seasons (actually, average, but bad for a highly paid supposed "ace").
  21. It's a little better than a 1 in 1000 chance. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/statistics/ps_oddspec.php I'd buy a lottery ticket if I had a 1 in 1000 chance, but I wouldn't plan on seeing baseball on the north side in October. I would bet a lot of money that there will be baseball on the north side in October.
  22. Maybe deal for Jason Bay? if the pirates dealt bay for guzman and marmol the franchise should be destroyed They still like to give away talent. When is Bay eligible for FA anyways? He is signed through 2009 at a ridiculously team friendly deal. 07:$3.25M, 08:$5.75M, 09:$7.5M That's for what is likely to be an OPS+ of 140 or more, while whoever signs Juan Pierre will likely pay almost twice that total for a guy with an 85 or lower OPS+.
  23. Those minor leaguers are pros too, they get paid. Sorry, just a little pet peeve about the phrase professional hitter, it's used for such a wide variety of reasons (guys with great approaches, guys who can make contact with just about anything, guys who aren't that good but have put up consistently above average numbers throughout their career, etc).
  24. I don't know exactly what his deal is, but as far as I can tell, he swings at everything and usually misses. The few times he does make solid contact it's really solid contact. He's very high on the K list, and has fewer AB's than all but one guy ahead of him (and fewer walks than anybody in the top 20 of that list. He's also near the top of the HR list.
