  1. I hope they find a way to get Zambrano about 30-40 pitches in today's game.
  2. A GM's job is to give his team the best chance to win. It's not to do the bare minimum in an effort to emulate teams that once got by with extremely great pitching (that couldn't be, and wasn't, repeated) covering up for other shortcomings.
  3. You got it all wrong. She wasn't hot.
  4. How many more posts are on premium? And how is it sorted that certain posts are only on premium? Everytime I read regular the conversation seems smooth with no missing link. It's not that certain posts are only found in premium, it's just that a premium page will hold 20 posts while a regular page will hold 15. That means that threads are smaller in premium (in terms of pages) and certain posts in a thread will be on different pages depending on whether it is being read in premium or regular. Plus we get more legroom, free booze and complimentary tickets to most games.
  5. You really believe that? His slugging alone makes him worth more than Pierre, and he isn't going to forget how to take a walk. Did you not notice the first part? If he continues on this decline, his numbers will look like Pierre's. I don't know if they will continue on that path. My guess is it won't be that drastic. But it's been that drastic for 2 years, and he's an old man with a thousand past injuries.
  6. But my point is his affiliation with the Mets has nothing to do with it. It's MLB wide, not to mention, all of pro sports.
  7. He's a broken down old man on a steady decline. He shows all the signs of somebody who could be out of the game in a couple years. In general, I don't want a guy for his last two years in the bigs. If Edmonds maintains the decline path he's on, losing .030 OBP points and ~.075 SLG points per year, he'll be no better than Pierre next season.
  8. Freudian? :D Anyway, I went to law school with a girl who said she had a thing going with a former Sox reliever whose name I shant mention here. She said he went so far as to introduce her to his wife and his kids at the park one night. He told her that this is a very normal thing for ballplayers and that most wives get it. I stood there in utter disbelief. Yeah, I know a girl who had a thing with a pretty famous ballplayer as well, although I don't think she was friendly with the rest of the family. A highly publicized divorce came about around the same time. I doubt this is anywhere close to Mets-centric. When you think about guys like Benson who married a stripper he met as a player, and how many of these guys actually end up with women who were basically sports groupies, it can hardly be a surprise if some of them go astray with the fresh meat.
  9. Let's see. Hanley Ramirez and Dan Uggla are both rookies and they bat 1/2 in the line up. Ramirez' OBP has slipped a bit to .337. Uggla's at .348. Cubs 1/2 is .323/.289 That's OBP, not AVG. I'll take Girardi all day long. Here's what the Cubs have gotten in OBP out of the 2 spot so far this year. Walker (133 ab)- .320 Cedeno (102 ab)- .260 Perez (74 ab)- .286 Womack (41 ab)- .318 Hairston Jr. (27 ab)- .185 Izturis (23 ab)- .320 Pierre (13 ab)- .154 Bynum (13 ab)- .154 Murton (12 ab)- .308 Theriot (10 ab)- .455 I'm not so sure Girardi wouldn't take that crappy veteran option over the kids if he had the option in the first place.
  10. That's not that dumb. Michigan is guaranteed matchups with its conference schedule. Notre Dame has to rely on individual series like this one to build its schedule. True, but I think it's fair to say that each big conference team should play at least one decent team out of conference, and if Michigan dropped ND, it'd be difficult for them to find another such team to play. Not that difficult. Yeah, if they backed out today it would be tough, for both teams. But it wouldn't be that hard to find one quality non-conference matchup. They've played some other decent non-con teams, like NIU, Oregon and Utah in recent years.

  12. I think you meant January; I know he didn't sign during the season. that was weird, yes, Jebruary, or smarch, can't remember.
  13. Right. He was signed for 2004, mainly as insurance in case Grudzielanek didn't re-sign. Wasn't Grudz already signed for 2004 when Walker was signed. It's my recollection that Walker was signed to play some second, first, third, and left. the Grudz got hurt and Walker became the starter. When Grudz returned, Walker was never given any playing time at the other positions. Actually, I think you're right; I got it backwards. I think Grudz was re-signed because the Cubs didn't know at the time if they'd be able to sign Walker, and when they did sign him they'd already promised the starting 2B job to Grudz. I don't think one had to do with the other. Grudz signed early. Walker didn't sign until July. It wasn't a case of not knowing if they could get Walker. Walker was just a bat that was available relatively cheap later on.
  14. Of couse not! What I meant was learning by earning wins, getting confidence, Progressing. As for over-using Zambrano? Z is hell bent on getting that Cy Young award this year. Right or wrong, the Chicago Bears as a team couldn't hold him back in trying to earn that award this year. I do agree with everything else you said. He's not going to win it if he keeps up his post ASB 4+ ERA. And it doesn't take the Bears to hold him back. It takes a manager with half a nut and most of a brain to not skip the 5th starter's spot, and to pull him before his pitch count gets high in any one game. The higher ups in Cubdom, Hendry, MacPhail, Baker, will puff up a .500 season, or near .500 season as a tremendous accomplishment. The younger players can't help but learn that this is some sort of respectable goal. Just like they can't help but learn that aggressiveness at the plate is much more important than patience.
  15. It's not spin, it's reality. Winning a few games in the 2nd half will change nothing. In the short-term it's nice to see a win. In the long-term, a "respectable" 2006 is about the worst case scenario. I'm more interested in the long-term success of this team, which will require massive changes in strategy. A respectable finish will only reinforce their misguided belief that they are headed in the right direction. This arguement is a fine line. Do you just want to the Cubs to pack it in and lose and lose bad from here on out? Doesn't that reinforce our losing mentallity for the past 99 years? Why waste the year away when at least you can use this year (2nd half) as a positive learning expirence for the youth of this ballclub. What could the young learn? That .500 is a respectable goal? I don't want them to pack it in and lose. I want them to stop overusing Zambrano for no reason. I want them to stop skipping the 5th starters spot like ignorant morons. I want them to stop calling up promising young pitchers and then throwing them off their regular schedule with absurd usage patterns. I want them to play the promising young players as much as possible, and rid themselves of worthless veteran crap. What I don't want is a .500 season to make them think Rusch and Neifi should be back next year, that speed at the top of the order is of utmost importance and that since Juan was so good in July, when the better play began, that means he's worthy of a 3 year contract, of any value. I don't want them to think that a late season recovery justified the very poor planning they had for the entire 2006. Failing to get anywhere close to .500 is not wasting a year. Only somebody with the mentality of Dusty Baker would think that nothing can be gained and learned in a loss. Most importantly, they should learn that what they did to create this season was wrong. A late season surge will only act as positive reinforcement of a negative behavior.

  17. Explains how Queen's sorry butt got as far as they've gone. Combine these with the wave at Wrigley the other day and I'm starting to lose my desire to be associated with other Cubs fans.
  18. But you have to realize, Lelie isn't reporting to camp anytime soon, and he's a FA after this year I believe. It's a cap move and a team morale move. Fourth round picks aren't trash anymore (Nathan Vasher anyone?), and Michael Haynes has never been given a chance here in Chicago. It's definitely a better deal for the Bears, but it makes sense for Denver too. Talk about selling low...if Denver would've traded Lelie in the offseason, they could've gotten so much more for him rather than just a 4th round pick and Michael Haynes. Michael Haynes is a bust, plain and simple...I don't think a change of scenery will help him out that much. If I were Denver, I would probably request at least a 2nd round pick for Lelie. Didn't Denver just take on a couple of "bust" defensive lineman last year and get very good seasons out of them? They are the ultimate scheme team that seems to be able to get the most out of guys.
  19. Well, I'm hearing the Jets are using this as a developmental season. There's next to no hope for contending this season, so I doubt they'd trade much for a good but far from great RB. But anything's possible I guess.
  20. Respectable to me is a very bad goal to set. Respectable reaks of mediocrity, and appreciating respectability is akin to accepting mediocrity. Even if they finish 82-80, what would be a strong finish, this season would be a disaster. You can't just judge a season based on how you play the last two months. Games in April, May and June count, even though the Cubs often downplay the risk of losing lots of them. A "respectable" finish to 2006 is only going to mean sustained mediocrity, which is going to keep this team locked into the cycle of mediocrity that has plagued them for so many years. He's just saying the same thing your Sig says... I know, and my inclusion of that line (Dusty said something like that several weeks ago) is a sarcastic reminder of how pathetic this team is. They aren't a threat for world series contention, this year or anytime soon, because all they want to do is contend within the division and make it respectable.
  21. The problem is that it will be viewed as a trememdous accomplishment, by the media, by Dusty, by Hendry and management. They will all pat themselves on the back and try the same failed crap next season, mistakenly thinking that 3 months of success will carry into 6 months of success next season. That reinforces that mediocrity is still an acceptable goal for the team. No it isn't. The best possible result was firing Hendry and Baker 2 months ago and completely changing the direction of this misguided franchise. Stabile mediocrity is still mediocrity. It is more enjoyable to see them play well and win. The big picture problem, however, is that winning a few more games now does absolutely nothing to ensure 2007 is better. And we can always count on the Cubs to screw up the offseason.
  22. ETA: Cubs.com says he's a go on Saturday Cubs.com confirms this information. Nothing like introducing a kid pitcher to the stupidity of Cubs management by giving him the traditional 8 days off between starts.
  23. A stadium in the suburbs would suck to go to. And it wouldn't even come close to guaranteeing a better product on the field (how much more do you think ownership will spend on the team if they play out there?).
  24. While I want no part of Neifi, Jones hasn't been horrible. Stats: AVG .288 | HR 18 | RBI 55 | OBP .321 | SLG .499 Baker was talking about recent numbers, during the team's improved play. And recently Jones has been horrible, slowing eating away at those mediocre season numbers, bringing them back in-line with his mediocre career.
