    Welcome to the forum! That's a big pet peeve for me, how the writers like a guy or not. You would hope these guys would be professionals and be able to separate that but in many cases they are bitter little jealous men who hold grudges instead of doing their jobs as they are suppose to do, especially NY press guys. Are the writers even involved with Santo's chances anymore? I thought it was all veterans' committee at this point, ie. HOF players. They were the ones that stopped him in the first place....those are the guys I was talking about. You're probably right that most of them are gone. Even then, it's a bit of a stretch to blame NY writers. The voters are from all over the country.

    He could, only if he pitches really well for the first month, and a big money team is desperate for starting pitching.

    Actually, there's pitching and there's not pitching. In the past, Prior hasn't been pitching. Now he is. That's a big difference. If he pitches, and just gets rocked, then that's an issue. But by and large, when Prior has pitched, he's pitched well. He may never have his "best stuff" again. But until Prior goes out and looks like crap for a prolonged period of time, I don't see how anybody can say he'll be a shell of his former self. He wasn't a "shell" when he came back in 2005. Last year he was clearly not healthy enough to pitch, and when he tried to force a comeback, he didn't have anything. The fact that he's pitching now would seem to indicate, that at the very least, this year is not similar to last year.

    That doesn't mean he's not overpaid. True, but the original poster's point is that Hendry would only go up as high as he did if there was some other teams bidding for him as well. All of them might have been overpaying for his actual production, but the fact that Hendry signed him for so much indicates that there was a market for Marquis. Since I brought up the market think, I'll state that what I said was there wasn't much of a market. There weren't 10 teams bidding heavily, that much is obvious. Maybe somebody else offered the same money, that doesn't make it a strong market. And that doesn't support the idea that he's tradable right now.

Hendry has shown a clear pattern of overpaying for mediocrity in the past. I don't understand how you can try and defend the signing of Marquis by saying he usually doesn't overpay for starters. If you believe that he does overpay for starters, please feel free to cite some examples. I can't recall a starter that he vastly overpaid for, prior to this year. Are you trying to use that as defense of the Marquis signing? I don't see what it matters. But to entertain the notion, Rusch was used as a starting pitcher and overpaid. I think he overpaid for Maddux, who was making $9m as a mediocre starter. He paid $90+ million for one of the worst teams in baseball, so obviously he overpays.

    You specified that Chicago teams are lucky. The fact that other teams/cities are in the same boat would negate the point. You also didn't say a think about "right now". You statement was "do you Chicago people realize your teams play in the worst conferences", and that "overall Chicago teams are lucky". I fail to see the point.

    At this point though, if he's actually pitching, it's hard to maintain the "there's something wrong" idea. There doesn't seem to be much of a secret going on. We're not hearing that he's being held out and we don't know why. He's not in an undisclosed location. His past history is troublesome, no doubt. But as long as he's pitching, I can't help but think that the "June at the earliest" timeframe is just not very likely. If he doesn't feel good after his first start, skips his next and gets some weird schedule, all bets are off. But Prior pitching at this point is completely different than past seasons.

    The Central Division is pretty good. Four of the five teams are over .500. It's the rest of the East that stinks. True but you have to admit overall the Chicago teams are a little lucky in this regard. I don't see your point. So would somebody who is a Knicks, Mets, Giants and Rangers fan. What about Philly fans? Furthermore, it's not like this is a hard and fast rule. The NFC used to reign, and will again. The NBA West wasn't always dominant. Neither was the AL.

    I know you're just doing this to protect yourself from being let down, but what's the point? I'd say it's extremely likely that that won't be the case. Granted, something could come up, but you could say that about anybody. Given Prior's history, I can see how there's cause for concern, but nothing that has actually happened leading up to this spring and so far in camp could lead you to believe that. If I had to put money on Prior either starting on time, or not making his first start until June, based on what we know right now, I'd have to go with the former. I'm not criticizing you or anything. I just don't understand it. I personally don't see the "not ready until June at the earliest" as very likely. If Prior isn't going to be ready until June, then I just don't think he'll be ready at all. I think he's either going to start the season relatively healthy, or not be of much use at all this year. It's not like he's recovering from TJS, where you would put a likely date and timeframe out there. At this point, the most likely scenario seems to be early April. If something happens to push that back this spring, then I think we'll ultimately just see another lost season.

    Partially because he took significantly less than some other pretty crappy pitchers. Partially because there just wasn't any talk about him going elsewhere. It's pretty clear there wasn't a big bidding war for him. I don't see how it's a stretch to say that.

    We can't trade Marquis yet. If Marquis was told he was being put in the bullpen, I'm sure he'd ok a trade. I think that's the smallest part of the difficulty. Not only does he have to okay a trade, the big problem is getting the opposing team to okay the trade. Nobody would take him right now. There wasn't much of a market for him this offseason, and any team that may have been interested likely spent that money on other options. Basically, if Marquis was a free agent right now, it would be virtually impossible for him to get the same contract he got from the Cubs from any other team. So how can they trade him? The only way is for him to pitch relativley effectively for a considerable period of time. I could see the Mets being desperate enough for starting pitching to take him on, but it would have to be after he's shown something this season. There's no way they take the risk that his 2006 was an aberration right now.

    The report didn't say it was lean muscle. Weightlifters can put on a lot of weight in a hurry by loading up on protein after workouts on a regular basis without much happening to cut that muscle down. It's probably a lot of bulk, but not very well cut, if you get the picture. I gained 20 lbs (without getting fat) every year from the time I was 14-20, and since I wrestled from November-March (losing weight), the bulk of that weight gain took place from March-July workouts (I'd start to lose weight once football started in August). As a 21 year old, I'd think it'd be pretty easy for him to put on that kind of weight.

    I think it's pretty clear that this isn't true. Baker had no patience for patience. He despised patience and despised walks. I think Perry is clearly different. Baker may have talked about being patient within the strike zone, but he made it plainly obvious he wanted his players to swing early and swing often. He wasn't interested in having guys get deep into counts and get a good pitch to hit. He wanted them swinging at the first thing that was remotely close, then he'd stand around confused when his guys would swing at stuff that wasn't close. It's a huge mistake to think this is the same stuff Baker preached.

    Floyd is bad out there, but I think the rest of the crew is okay. Murton's arm troubles are way overblown. He was easily the best arm in the OF last year. While it's not a laser, it's accurate and acceptable. And that's what you expect from LF. The first, second and third concerns about your outfield should be offensive production. Defense is secondary, unless you're getting the equivalent of a little leaguer out there. As much trouble as he was last year, Jones wasn't even to the point of hurting the team defensively. People have to remember that defense is not what has cost the Cubs. The #1 problem has been a lack of offense, with poor pitching a close 2nd.

    The nation ain't buying it. Prior will have to start 25+ games this year before people start believing again. There's no doubt about it but you can't argue that Prior starting a ST game isn't news. Good news. I'm not arguing that at all. I'm in danger of exploding with optimism if Prior gets off to a decent start in spring training games. I'm just saying that the national audience isn't buying it. Far too many people drafted him in fantasy baseball expecting more. I think the typical thought is similar to my friends' yesterday at a hangover solving diner breakfast. One guy basically said "When is Prior going to decide to not be a pu***?" And the other guys just assumed he'd miss most of the season. I didn't really get into it, as I was concentrating on my chocolate chip pancakes. But that's how they think.

    The original thread was why is Finley being mentioned as a possible Cub (or something like that) and it has since been changed to reflect the signing. Yeah I see what you mean. It sounds weird though, even to those who understand it. I agree.

    I don't know if 650 will be enough to replace Izzy with Cedeno very quickly-I mean, Cedeno would have to improve a pretty good amount from last year to be an improvement over those numbers. 650 might be bad enough for them to make a trade at mid-season, but not to be replaced by Cedeno without injuries. It might depend on how well the rest of the team is hitting too. You might be able to carry Izturis if the rest of the team is hitting well but if they are struggling, it's going to hurt having his bat in the lineup at 650. More importantly, it's pretty safe to assume nobody in the Cubs organization is going to think at all about a 650 OPS, what it means, and whether it should be replaced. If Izzy is hitting .275, with a .310 OBP and .315 SLG, they aren't going to be thinking about his 625 OPS. He's probably going to have to do something like hit .220 for 3 months with less than stellar defense before they think about replacing him.
