  1. Yes, I am a Bears fan, and I'm old enough to have seen Bears games at Wrigley Field. I always forget that '71 was the first year they played in Soldier Field.
  2. I think the theory is that the Cubs would be interested in Lou because of his connections to ARod, but the White Sox would be in better position to get ARod. Not that I agree with the theory.
  3. Compare that with the Cubs who absolutely refuse to fire a coach even if his troops get the worst results in the league. What was their oft-repeated approach, and what does Narron prefer?
  4. So we'll go from Hank Aaron stories to Fred McGriff stories?
  5. It's not worth it. The wall has been written upon.
  6. I know Neifi is long gone, but it is still funny to see how he is talked about in the media. This gets me thinking that maybe it wasn't just Dusty. Maybe there's something about him that makes mangaers love him  . He's comfort food for lazy baseball minds. He "does the little things", is "gold glove caliber", knows how to bunt, makes lots of contact and runs at a reasonable rate of speed. It wasn't until very recently that people started criticizing managers for using a guy like Neifi, let alone hitting him 2nd. Neifi is the type of player old-school types believe a middle infielder is supposed to be. He could go 0-20, but if he lays down a sac bunt he'll keep his job.
  7. They've done a good bit of investigative work on Carlos Lee and Alfonso Soriano, whom they nearly got in 2000 in the Sammy Sosa traded that didn't happen. A lot of this will become more clear once a new manager is on board. What are their thoughts on Murton? They like him a lot, and believe it or not, they're well aware of the comparison of his second-half splits with those of Carlos Lee. What they may do is see if they can get more power in center field. They do believe Murton will hit more homers than he did this season. I believe that as well. He'd be a great option at about $400,000, allowing them to spend the money elsewhere. I'm glad to hear that, but it makes me wonder why they would be doint investigative work on Carlos Lee. Unless, of course, they are willing to move Jones or put him in CF. I'd be shocked to see that (but glad). Good to hear Bruce. As a follow-up, has there been any more rumblings about guys like Jones, who apparantly came here because of Dusty, and may be really upset about him leaving? Would they look to move him, or is he trying to get moved?

  9. Two words: Scott Boras The Cubs never had a problem negotiating with Boras. Where is Justin Jackson project to be picked? They've had problems getting his good clients.
  10. Lou is not a brave choice, he's just the opposite. He is in fact the safest possible choice, which is why I predicted he'd be Hendry's favorite. Lou is the safest non-Girardi choice. Naw, Lou is safer. Girardi only managed one season and got fired. He's not officially proven yet. Lou's been around forever and had some good seasons. Girardi would give Hendry a lot of good will. Not hiring Girardi would piss a lot of people off. Lou is probably one of only a few guys that would placate the masses that would be pissed about Girardi not being here. And his big nameness is also the only competition for Girardi's story, as it pertains to PR.
  11. Well, that's true.
  12. Promoted to what? Hendry has been GM during entire existence of this board, so you can't be talking about his promotion to GM. I want him promoted back when he was the minor league guy and the minor leagues looked like they were the lone bright spot in the organization. I thought he'd be a good GM. He's since proved otherwise. I don't see what is so amazing about coming to a realization that somebody you thought would be good for a job is actually bad at it. It would be amazingly foolish to sit here 4 years later and insist he stay despite the failures simply because you thought he would be good for the job. It would be like a president sticking with bumbling cabinent members simply because he can't admit a mistake.
  13. Hendry's existence in the Cubs front office is a sign of failure. Anti-Hendry sentiment was, and is, extreme because he's a pathetic GM that has screwed over Cubs fans. To me, that is unforgiving. With that line of thinking, and such a blanket out-of-context statement, you are turning all your opinions on a specific subject matter into irrelevent observations not worth reading. I am pretty sure everyone is aware of your hatred of Hendry. Not every individual conversation requires that turning of the jack-in-the-box crank response. My comment was specific to the context of hiring a manager within 48 hours of Bakers departure, which was the source of the ire in this thread and a dozen others the past week+. It's not out of context. Jim has screwed this team up, and most people have very little faith in him. They fear the worst, which is fairly reasonable, given the situation. Your jack-in-the-box response of defending Hendry at every turn is well documented, so it doesn't really matter what specific circumstance you bring up. You act surprised, and quite incredulous, when people express doubt anti-Hendry sentiment and assume the worse. I don't understand why. I don't understand how recent events could possibly indicate that people misread signs of failure. It's 2 weeks after the season ended, 3 months after it became clear Dusty was gone, a full year after he should have been gone, and 4 years after he screwed up in the first place by hiring the exact wrong guy. But you are more interested in criticizing fans who don't like the direction this team is going.

  15. 'Tis so. There's still a lot that needs to happen before there's a deal, but he's clearly the Cubs' guy. Bruce, in your opinion, is this a good fit for the Cubs? It's a good fit for a desperate GM who needs to win right away. I could see Lou taking a 2 year deal, with some sort of option, to match up with Hendry. He's an old dude, and I don't think he'd be up for more than 2 years of losing if that's what happens.
  16. Some teams have this option on their website, listing past coaches and years served. Not the job they had though.
  17. Barrett was hurt after the 2006 season was buried. If you are going to play the excuse game, at least have the courtesy to not include the ones that didn't have anything to do with the team going in the tank. But he did miss time for suspension. After the season was effectively over.
  18. Driving cars is far more deadly, and for many, small planes are as much a necessity as a car. If you are joking about a death like that immediately after hearing it, you are a pathetic jdiot. Did I say I was joking about it! Did I post that! You're the idiot who blindy can't see any other way but your own. Expand your mind a bit will ya! Everyone is different and everyone deals with death in their own way. Excuse me? Calling me an idiot? You wrote about radio people joking about it, you wrote about "everybody" joking about it. It's hard to tell whether or not you were joking about it, but it's clear you have no problem with people that were. I do have a problem with them and have no problem calling them idiots. I never said anything about you. As long as were clear on that. I see that I used the word "you", and can see why you might think I was calling you an idiot, but I wasn't. I was meaning the general "you", as in, if you are the type of person whose first instinct is to play learning to fly on the radio after hearing of this incident, then you are an idiot in my mind". Apologize for the confusion. My bad.

  21. Lou Piniella is in love with Neifi Perez.

  23. Oh lordy, do I not like hearing the things that come out of Lou Piniella's mouth.
  24. I just want to say that I'm still happy Dusty is gone. Although I'm pissed he was ever hired in the first place and pissed that Jim Hendry is still in charge of making decisions that involve the Cubs.
