Heilman is talented, but nothing special. I'd be interested in him, but don't see the Mets giving him away. I've always thought they valued him highly, but their usage of him indicates otherwise. -
I think the difference between this and Sosa is that none of it is coming from the Cubs. Its all coming from writers with learning disabilities that heard from ESPN that players like Eckstein are what wins championships. All we're hearing from the Cubs is that Ramirez is their #1 priority. They wouldnt say that if they were planning on not signing him because that would make it seem like their offseason isnt going well. It might not be the Cubs themselves, but it's still in the trib:

What bullpen arms would you be talking about for Jacque Jones? I rather just keep Jones than make a trade for Sheffield. Cubs already have a lack of left-handed power bats in the lineup. I would hate to see a 07 team with just right-handed batters. Even if they were productive? The only reason you'd want to keep from having no LH hitters is if the team struggled against RHP. The fact is the Cubs struggle more against LHP than RHP. How you swing the bat is much less important than how productive you are when you swing.

I guess you could also probably argue that anything any player does on any team besides the world series champions is meaningless. Derrek Lee's 2005 was meaningless.

Why is it so difficult for everyone here to discover that the REALLY good players are absent from this list. The black, latino, dominican, and other minority players are the ones in the running for the MVP honors--an award that none of these guys have a chance to win. It's been discovered. The media and marketing folks are hoping to get white people all excited about voting for their favorite scrappy white dude, because they have a preconceived notion about what a hard working, self sacrificing, team player looks like. -
Interesting, the same could be said for Alou. Alou has always been known as a pretty good teammate. In fact, from all indications, he was a very positive influence on Ramirez. Where did you hear he was a positve influence on Ramirez? Almost every writer has alluded to the story.

Past failures in free agency doesn't mean it's a bad way to try to improve your team. It's pretty much the only way the Cubs can improve their team right now.

Does he want us to throw in Zambrano as well just for kicks? He wanted Zambrano for ARod, but is now willing to take back 2 young arms instead.

FWIW, and I know it's not worth anything, but the same guy in my office who wants to get rid of ARod, now wants to trade us Sheffield for Howry and Dempster.

I wanted Dubois to get a chance. What I didn't want was an outfield of Dubois, Patterson and Burnitz. Likewise, I wanted Murton to get a chance, but I didn't want an OF of Murton, Pierre and Jones. You need some big time production out of your OF. Going with a guy like Dubois, or Murton, should allow you to afford big time production elsewhere in that OF. The problem wasn't giving a kid the chance. The problem was giving him the chance, but them constructing a team that needed that kid to produce big time, right away, in order to succeed. I see your point. But part of is that Dubois just wasn't very good. Murton is 3x the player of Dubois. I'm not all that confident Dubois' stats would have been any better with more production out of CF and RF. I didn't say they would have been. Had he gotten 500 PA, maybe. But even if they stayed bad, it would have affected the team less if they didn't do such a bad job with the other positions. I'm not going to debate whether or not Dubois would have been better. I think he should have gotten a better shot, but that's not the point.

What? Neifi and Rusch money? The difference is the guy would produce. Add his $5m to Jones's $5m, platoon them, and you are getting the produciton of a $15m+ individual player.

I base my Lilly comments on the numbers he's put up. I have seen the occasional Ted Lilly outing, but don't remember much. I don't think Schmidt can be called injury prone. I do, however, think he's walking a very tight rope. He's had prior injuries, and has missed starts in 5 of the past 7 seasons. Every year you read or hear about something that is bothering Schmidt. He seems to tough it out, and only misses a start here and there. But he's not Greg Maddux in the durability department. He's not even Mike Mussina, as far as that is concerned. He's a nice pitcher, and should be pretty darn good. But he's had some nagging issues, and injuries in the past, and is at the age when stuff can catch up to you pretty fast.

Technically it was Hollandsworth who replaced Alou and Burnitz for Sosa, but they all affected one another.

You should never make personel decisions based solely on what the player did the year before. Agreed, but his 2003 wasn't too bad either. I say that with this in mind, Hendry basically replaced him with Burnitz. I would have taken Alou over JB every day of the week. I was all for getting rid of Alou. Ending up with Burnitz, however, was a joke. Alou got paid $9m per as a mercenary and he didn't live up to his contract while here. On top of the lack of production, there were the defense, base running and attitude issues that bugged the heck out of me. (his 1 billionth check swing grounder at the end of the Mets series in '04 just made it worse). Had I known at the time what direction Hendry would end up taking this team, I probably would have been more than happy to see Alou at 2/12 in Chicago, although I'm not sure he signs that deal here. Guys take it as an insult when they have to take a pay cut to remain here. (Grace was insulted by a Cubs offer that was in-line with what he got annually in Arizona). I'm not Alou fan. But at $4-5m in a platoon role, I'd be more than happy to see him in Chicago. I'm just not sure he would accept such a salary and role.

It's a big risk, but much less of an issue if you are paying him $4-5m and hoping for 300-400 PA.

One of the early themes from Lou is about resting his regulars. I don't know how far he'd be willing to take that, but there's at least some hope.

I know who they are, just didn't know the voices I was listening to. But it was about 75% commercials so I turned it off.

I'd prefer Wilson myself, but Alou is significantly more productive.

Mulligan and Hanley? I need to stop listening to Mike North on the way to work too, but I just like to hear Chicago sports in the morning, so that's my only source. I don't know who these guys are, but I think I heard somebody say Mulligan, so I guess. I turned on North, but that guy is painful to listen to.

Listening to WSCR online again (I need to stop), and these guys are ragging on Benson for not looking a handoff into his hands. RBs are not supposed to look at the ball when they are receiving a handoff. It is the QB's job to put the ball in there, the RB is supposed to keep his head up and look for where he needs to run.

He missed the first two months of 2004. Shoot, I'm mixed up. Was it 2005 where he just missed his first start and then showed up? Yes. He was slated to start on the 12th, the first day they said they'd need a 5th starter, but that was rained out and he pitched on the 13th. Then started for two months until he got nailed by the ball. -

I think he brings more than enough with the bat, as a platoon partner, to offset his bad knees and baserunning gaffes. Alou/Jones would be a tremendously productive platoon. Unfortunately, they are two guys who probably would balk at sitting while a kid like Murton gets to play.
