  1. Quote from an anonymous commenter to a Vancouver Sun article about Salo's injury: :rotfl:
  2. I was pretty young, but I recall that situation being an ownership thing that soured the fans. But mostly it's just a nostalgia thing.
  3. Yeah of course the rabid fan base totally helps, but if you are a major Winnipeg or Canadian corporation, how much money are you going to invest to advertise when your reach is only 700k people? I'm not saying it can't work. I believe it can. I'm just saying that this is the real major hurdle that keeps cities like Winnipeg from getting NHL teams in the past. That is why, with half of Canada starving for a pro team near by, the most viable option for years has been to have a team play 50 miles from Toronto. Absolutely, the best Canadian option is Hamilton. That whole St. Catherine's-Hamilton-Toronto corridor is wall-to-wall people. Or I guess Quebec, though that metro area is also just over 700,000. All economics aside, the best-case option would be to move Phoenix to Winnipeg, Miami to Quebec, Atlanta to Hamilton and Nashville to Hartford. That NHL would be badass. Although the best case would be to get a team to KC and perhaps one to the PNW so that the Hawks and Detroit could move back to the east.
  4. I understand that you need a strong base of businesses from whom to get corporate support, sponsorships, etc. But if the team is completely off the radar, as they appear to be in places like Miami and Atlanta, are businesses really going to put their sponsorship dollars there?
  5. Now you're talking.
  6. What you do have is numerous businesses in both of those cities who can buy season tickets and provide sponsorships. It's not just about having enough people to buy tickets, but having a big enough local economy to support a sponsorship based business like pro sports. The Packers get by because of the revenue sharing in the NFL, but the NHL has failed in several smaller hamlets, hockey mad and not hockey mad. Edmonton has at times been a threat to fold. I'd really like to see it work, but it's going to be tough to get a franchise to thrive there. That's a fair point. Hopefully that extremely wealthy owner is willing to underwrite any potential losses.
  7. Here's a Yahoo sports column with more info: http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/news;_ylt=As0923ZrI2eJTADPt202POt7vLYF?slug=dw-winnipeg051010 A 15,200-seat arena? That's awfully small, but perhaps perfect for that market. And that potential owner has some serious cash. Even if it's all in loonies and toonies. EDIT: And by the way, 5 of the 6 Canadian teams filled their houses at 100% capacity on average this season. Ottawa was at 98.5%. Edmonton and Calgary were both 100%.
  8. Which equals 700,000 rabid hockey fans. And I 100% agree with UM. More Canadian teams is good for the NHL. Yes, there are presumably 100% rabid fans, but it's still an extremely small metro area to support a team. People have talked about the struggles that Edmonton and Calgary have had keeping up with the big boys, and Winnipeg is considerably smaller than both of those cities, and not growing nearly as fast. It's also completely isolated, nowhere near the three BC teams, and more than 450 miles from Minneapolis. I am a big fan of NHL teams being in Canada, and I always enjoy seeing Canadian teams in the playoffs. But Winnipeg seems like a difficult place to put a team right now. I understand what you're saying, but population isn't the key. Look at Atlanta or Miami. Millions of people, and nobody there gives a [expletive] about hockey. I'll bet if you looked at the actual potential fan bases for hockey in those cities (and admittedly I have no idea how you would calculate that), it would be less than 700,000.

  10. I read yesterday that Pac and Floyd had an agreement prior to the cancelled fight that they would split the purse 50/50. It really surprises me that Floyd agreed to that. The speculation now is whether Floyd still would agree, in light of the fact that his PPV with Mosley probably sold about 500,000 "buys" than Pac-Clottey did. I don't think that's fair, since nobody knows who Clottey is. But we'll see. Roach says the fight will happen in October or November.
  11. I guess this can go here since it's not Hawks related. http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=5179252 Looks like the Coyotes are on the verge of a move back to Canada after all. But not Hamilton. The article mentions KC as an option too. Much as I'd love another relatively close place to go see the Hawks, I don't see KC supporting a hockey team much more than a place like Nashville has. And that's assuming the team is decent like Nashville. Send them back to Winnipeg.
  12. Hope he's OK. It's one of those things that evoke immediate empathy, even from fans of the opposition :) I wouldn't be heartbroken if he doesn't play, but yeah, I hope the dude's business is in order. I agree that the first goal in this one will be huge. I don't see the Hawks as a particularly fragile team, and I don't think the intensity of playing this game on the road will intimidate them. But I'd still breathe a lot easier if they get that first goal. They have showed a lot more resiliency in the playoffs but this is still the team that would have a 3-0 lead in a game and give up a goal and watch the floodgates open. I hear you. But, and this is just a hunch of course, Niemi is due for a monster game. When's the last time he really tore it up? I don't think he really has in this series. Of course, when you score seven goals I guess it's not necessary. But this is the time for him -- he's played some of his most insane games on the road in tough buildings this year, including I think one in Vancouver. That's my call -- Niemi goes bonkers and not only stands on his head, but glides on his head all the way down the ice, flips over on to his skates and gives LUUUUUUU a Stooges-like two-fingered eye poke.

  14. I was thinking about that earlier. I guess that would suck, but they are used to this sort of thing.
  15. Nobody gives a [expletive] anyway.
  16. Yeah but you gotta wonder how much of that is due to small sample size, or if it has to do with playoff pressure, because all across the league the road teams have been winning more than the home teams. That said, part of me finds it hard to believe the Hawks can take all 3 Vancouver games. But I guess when you've already won the first 2 you feel a lot better about your chances for the third. The last two home games where the Canucks were really under pressure, they [expletive] the bed. I know I said this last night, but I'm confident.
  17. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pZoYw3kcKo Refer to my quoted statement above.
  18. it's British, and since the lousy canucks still bow to the queen, that's how they have to write it. Yep. The biggest surprise to me when I visited Toronto was all the reference to and reverence for the queen.
  19. We should be laughing at that. But... :-)) :-)) :-))
  20. I guess it's a good thing the Hawks will start the conference finals in San Jose then. Yeah I was thinking it will be good to start on the road. Try to steal one, and then come home. For whatever that's worth anymore, but still. These days I'd almost rather have game 6 at home than a potential game 7 at home that probably won't happen.
  21. Oh my god yes. I remember in HS once my cup didn't make it into my bag for an away game at a rink that didn't have a pro shop. I was so scared to tell the coach, so I just rolled with it. As a winger, I was never so scared to get in front of shots from the point. Our goalie also forgot his once. And goalie cups are massive pieces of equipment, for obvious reasons. Again, without the coaches seeing, we duct taped a spare elbow pad over his crotch. Glad to hear Salos' [expletive] is apparently in order.
  22. Q looks pissed. I really don't think there was a huge disparity in effort level tonight though.
  23. If nothing else, at least Luongo won't go home with a shutout to boost his confidence. Like I said before, he hasn't been Halak-esque tonight.
  24. Oh, that's not a good penalty. Wow. Okay, just one of those things. Hossa needs to be more careful though.
