  1. Good for Dale. I hope all Hawks fans wish him well. And we'll trade him Huet after the playoffs end. There would be some justice in that. As others have said, the NHL playoffs are a crapshoot. So roll out there with a decent goaltender, stud offensive players and solid defense and you'll have a chance every year. And that's exactly what the Hawks have. I'm thinking 6-8 years of being a constant contender. And they have to waive Huet. There is just no way around that at this point. And especially with all the money he is making with these many playoff home games, I don't see Rocky keeping him around for financial reasons.
  2. I was thinking about that yesterday as I was at that graduation party and really did nothing but sit in the basement and watch the Hawks game. Fortunately, and surprisingly, about half of the people there did the exact same thing. It reminded me of my birthday parties when I was a kid. It's in early June, and my mom would also just have family and friends over for pizza because the Bulls were always playing deep in the playoffs at that point and all I really wanted to do on my birthday was watch the game. Seems like more than once Jordan gave me the gift of smacking down the Knicks.
  3. Even I had to think about it for a second. If it meant the Blackhawks would win Game 2 against the Sharks, I would go back in time and make sure Deloris Peoples falls in love with someone else, Back to the Future style, thus erasing Michael Jordan from history. Easy there. I sort of fell out of love with the Bulls after Jordan left and the NBA changed (I know that sounds curmudgeonly), but Jordan made my childhood awesome.
  4. You know he was planning that one all along. I saw that too and had the same thought. He's been holding onto that one for awhile.
  5. Even I had to think about it for a second.
  6. Watching both of those teams, the lack of speed in relation to the Hawks is stunning.
  7. Niemi earned his keep tonight. What a game for him. Pressure is off a little now for Tuesday. I hope they don't play like it because they can really step on their throats now.
  8. I was thinking about this the other day. Just how many of these guys were brought up from the system, either drafted or signed from overseas. I count (and I could be wrong about a few of these): Niemi, Keith, Hjalmarsson, Seabrook, Hendry, Kane, Toews, Brouwer, Bolland, Byfuglien and Burish. That's over half the active roster on any given night that is truly homegrown. EDIT: And there are still guys like Lalonde and Beach coming up. Obviously the days of getting blue-chip talent via the draft are over (thank god) though. Then you add in the ridiculous trade for Sharp and I think an equally good trade, under the circumstances with Ruutu, for Ladd, and you've got some great moves. I've ripped Tallon for botching the Huet and Campbell deals, but he deserves some credit for all that.
  9. Like he said, the point is a broader one. If you don't know what you're talking about, best not to broadcast it to the world, or at least the entire section. And I've said before, I welcome everyone who is interested in hockey. I'm certainly no expert, but I'm always willing to answer questions (which usually means offering opinions, of which I have many). The Hawks need to grow the fanbase, and not everyone is a genius of the game from day one.
  10. It's official, Game 1 at 2:00 CDT on Sunday. http://www.mercurynews.com/sports-headlines/ci_15078603?nclick_check=1
  11. Another thing is, a couple of those Hawks-Sharks games in the regular season were "spotlight" games that people were really looking at as measuring sticks for both teams. And when the pressure was on, SJ got dominated. I don't think we want to overplay the "choker" card with that team, but playing against the best competition they've seen all season over a long series, I think it will show.
  12. That's my point though, even when he's played well they didn't need him to make the big saves throughout the game.
  13. Yeah...and I think people are really writing off Niemi when they shouldn't be. They imply that he can't make big saves...when we've seen him do just that. He's not a goalie that will win you games maybe, but I think he's being underestimated. I think it can be said that from start to finish this postseason, he has not "won" a game. Even the shutouts against Nashville, those were mostly because of the entire roster clamping down in the defensive zone. I still think he's due to steal one soon here, and I think his Game 6 performance was a precursor to that. But pointing to the goaltending as a weakness at this point is lazy.
  14. That would be excellent. Not for me. Supposed to be at a graduation party for a friend a couple hours away that day. I suppose I could be an [expletive] and make them put the game on. But as usual, I'm the only hockey fan among these people. Or I could beg off and really piss off my wife. It's actually her friend. Um, it's the western conference finals, you would be an expletive if you didn't put the game on. That shouldn't even be a debate in your head. That's what my wife said. Oh, someone else there will want to watch. If not though, yes, I'll go it alone.

  16. It's great to be able to sit back and just watch the games tonight without the nerves. Especially that Montreal-Pittsburgh game. That should be some great hockey. I don't know why, but I've thought the Boston-Philly series has been the ugly stepchild of this round of the playoffs. Just no interest in those games at all. I suppose that will change if Philly wins tonight.
  17. Not to overlook any opponents ahead of us, but in my opinion they are a 4-3 stretch from winning it all. Crazier things have happened though. If Montreal beats Pittsburgh tonight, I'll feel much stronger about that statement of course. I haven't really wrapped my head around how much of a real possibility this is.
  18. Okay now we have a couple potential dates. There is no way this fight doesn't happen. Way too much money on the table. http://www.suntimes.com/sports/boxing/2265360,manny-pacquiao-floyd-mayweather-jr-fight-12.article
  19. In what I read he wasn't saying the Canucks were better. I believe the quote was more like he didn't think the Blackhawks were necessarily better than Vancouver, but maybe smarter. Essentially he called them even with Chicago's discipline/smarts being the difference, and while I'm still a hockey novice, I'd have to agree with that sentiment. Smarter, know how to win and won the series is that not the better team? I agree with Jersey, I really don't think he was taking a shot at the Hawks. In fact I think it was a shot at his own team, such as "we are evenly matched but they didn't play like jackasses or put on their invisibility cloaks for most of the series."
  20. I just had this thought going through my head (you can tell I'm focused on work today) when I went over to the Daily Herald to see what Sassone had to say: http://blogs.dailyherald.com/node/4038 The headline says it all and I agree. I don't even think Pittsburgh can hang with either of these teams. Their struggles with a short-handed Montreal team show that well enough. And neither Boston nor Philly concern me at all.
  21. ^Pasta and hair gel. Classic.
  22. I'm not sure about his contract situation, but if I was Vancouver I'd think about a coaching change... Too much talent on that team to implode at home 0-3 in a huge playoff series for that town and those fans. They aren't getting rid of Luongo, probably not breaking up the Sedins. You can make the case that the internals on that team are not strong, which I would think tends to point at the coach... So claim the Canucks are still better all you want, Bobby. You're part of that team too, and looking at it from the outside, you just didn't measure up to Q. They have a stud goalie in juniors, which could intensify the calls to try to trade Bobby.
  23. No doubt about it. They are good players, but the fact that Luongo is the captain of that team tells me about all I need to know about them. No desire to be leaders, and after efforts like they gave the last two weeks, they probably shouldn't be.
  24. Selfishly I hope they start on Friday. If Game 1 is on Sunday afternoon, I am going to have to rudely skip a long-scheduled engagement.
