  1. My reaction every time I remember that the Cubs are playing:
  2. It's morbidly hilarious how many people run with this lazy "shouldn't be surprised when a football player is violent" meme across the internet. So, all football players are inherrently more prone to violence? Even kickers and QB's? How about a return guy? How about a running back with no prior criminal record?
  3. The Deadspin link in Wilson's post is a good start.
  4. That's a pretty ridiculous comparison. Nobody is conflating the action on a football field with something horrible like beating a child or punching a woman into unconsciousness. Shockingly, we're actually able to differentiate these clearly very different things. Why shouldn't we be surprised by it? Again, most of them aren't doing things like this, and the numbers don't show these incidents wildly varying within the world of pro athletes vs. the public at large. It's too uncomfortably close to dismissing or even kind of excusing it in a twisted way because "oh, of course a football player would do something like that." That's simply not true, and it's a lazy conclusion and there's zero point in questioning people reacting to it with shock.
  5. So then what are you saying here? We should just expect them to hurt the people around them? People are being disingenuous or clueless when they're shocked by something like this? I just never understand the point of comments like this.
  6. Do you get itchy building these straw men? I didn't say that playing football makes men into wife beaters, I just said it shouldn't come as a surprise when they are. You don't know what a straw man is. It's a "surprise" because most of them AREN'T wife beaters. It's a dumb attempt to inexplicably try to denigrate people who are horrified by this because...[expletive], I don't even know why you're doing that. It's a horrible thing that people are reacting strongly to, but you have an issue with that because they're not just dismissing it as "psh, whatever, of course athletes are beating their wives and kids and [expletive], ah-doy." Why would it possibly bother you that people are "shocked" or "surprised" over this?
  7. Well, you're the only one who gets the dumb thing you said. One, most people aren't dropping their monocles and [expletive] because they're so shocked; they're just appalled at [expletive] they'd be appalled at whether it was done by the nerdy accountant who lives down the block or the pumped up monster who plays football. And two, just assuming that a pumped up football monster (or anyone) is automatically or likely going to be a shitty human being who beats a kid like that or tries to murder a woman's face with their fist is, yes, dumb-dumb-dumb-dumb.
  8. http://img3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130405210153/degrassi/images/7/75/Eyeroll.gif You're so cool for getting this and everyone else is so stunned and stuff.
  9. I thought that son died Yup. Assaulted by the boyfriend of his mother. Way to take something away from that, AP.
  10. I'm kinda sick of football.
  11. Of all the reactions I have encountered in my travels, David snapping over being called a robot was the most...human.
  12. *Soler flashes his brilliant smile, chuckles quietly to himself and heals a child*
  13. The clip is on the Deadspin link; the announcer couldn't be a bigger meatball about it. "Your big guy goes down and you need to do something about it!"
  14. So then you have no problem with the fact that the NFL only waited until after the video was leaked to impose stiffer punishments? You have no problem that the Ravens waited until after the video leaked to terminate Ray Rice's contract? what? no, of course i'm not ok with their deplorable non-reaction to this. but i'm certainly not going to complain that public outcry forced them to get it right My complaint is that there was no public outcry before Monday's leak. Were you in a coma?
  15. The thing is that the video doesn't show anything we didn't already know. It doesn't change the narrative of the assault at all. How come "Ray Rice" was only trending on twitter after the video leaked? How come the congressional letter to the NFL was only crafted after the video leaked? How come this story is now the front page story of every mainstream media outlet only after the video leaked? We're all indicting the NFL and Goodell for only taking severe action after seeing a video depicting what we already knew. But then why aren't we doing the same with the media, and really, the general public as a whole? http://www.xclusivetouch.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/confused-gif.gif
  16. I'll remain skeptical until he pitches his first game as a Cub. I remain skeptical until he pitches the final pitch for the final out in game 7 of the World series in which the Cubs win. Game 7? I want a cakewalk in 5 games, tops.

  18. And we talked about going to a partial package for this season, but ended up getting the full one and donating a bunch of the games to charities. Obviously the write-off isn't near face value, but it helped take a lot of the sting out of a crappy season where nobody wanted to buy tickets.
  19. hubris Pretty much; "absolute power corrupts"...blah-blah-blah. He's a dumb meatball who figured a declining name player shouldn't have to take any kind of major hit for "just" hitting a woman.
  20. Nah, we've done full packages both years, but yes, you have the option of changing your ticket package (and seat location and number of seats) between each season.
  21. Rather ironic that the NCAA likely pulled the Penn State punishments when they did because of all the heat coming down on the NFL.
