Well, yeah, obviously. But that guy is basically saying the Cubs can't be serious contenders, like the season hangs on Happ. Like, Almora was hideous, but he's not THE reason why the Cubs blew it. Not even close. Strong disagree. Almora and the depth and deployment of it last year was a huge reason things failed. You got -2 WAR out of Almora, Descalso, Zagunis and Cargo in ~600 PAs. Getting even .5-1.5 WAR production out each player in those 4 spots of that depth could’ve been the difference. OK, but we were talking about someone weirdly acting like one dude in CF not sucking is apparently the difference between the Cubs being competitive, and not a collection of turds. If the argument is, "an entire horsefeathering terrible bench can make a team significantly worse," nobody is going to disagree.

Why would the Cubs contending hinge on how much time Happ gets in CF? If he's a negative fWAR guy like our everyday CF last season, it would definitely hurt the team. Well, yeah, obviously. But that guy is basically saying the Cubs can't be serious contenders, like the season hangs on Happ. Like, Almora was hideous, but he's not THE reason why the Cubs blew it. Not even close.

They weren't arguing to only pay Harper or Machado that kind of money at 36-37, or only at 32-33, so it has nothing to do with an argument for or against extended Rizzo. I think the point is if you were paying machado/harper that kind of money you're much less likely to have picked up Rizzo's option this year. No? Nah, he was just pointlessly trying to throw shade. Rizzo is a steal with those team options; things would have had to have gone south real bad with him for them to not pick it up, regardless of whether or not they had signed either of those guys. The Cubs would have made room elsewhere to keep him if necessary.

So what? None of that has anything to do with Rizzo. There's no evidence that Rizzo won't be a productive player at 32 - 33 years old, so I don't understand why some posters wouldn't want to extend him. The point was that some people thought he wouldn't be worth the money and yet they were willing to throw twice as much to pay Machado/Harper at 36 or 37 years old. They weren't arguing to only pay Harper or Machado that kind of money at 36-37, or only at 32-33, so it has nothing to do with an argument for or against extended Rizzo.

What does the former have to do with the latter. Because most were on board to paying that kind of contract to Harper/Machado. So what? None of that has anything to do with Rizzo.

He’s still one of the better 5-8 1B in the league and he’s pretty remarkably consistent from 2014-2019. I don’t know why we wouldn’t want him for 2-3 years past the two options years. He’ll be 32/33 when he hits FA, he doesn’t have some big payday waiting out there. Going 4/60 or 5/70 range seems perfectly reasonable and is something I’d want. There’s also the whole thing with him being the leader an everything of this group that he’s earned this a bit. I totally agree. Rizzo at 32 or 33 making $14 or $15 million per year will be better than paying Harper or Machado $26-$30 million when they're 37 or 38 yrs old. What does the former have to do with the latter.

So many Chicago teams have gone down in spectacular flames lately that I’m not sure it will have the impact that it should. For sure, nothing is going to change positively. We're gonna lose for a couple more seasons, then bring in a new front office, who will draft a new QB. That QB will show some flashes but ultimately suck, but we might get a season or two in there where the defense is amazing and we get a lot of close wins. But if a team isn't going to be great, misery porn is the next best thing. And it's hard to find good misery porn anywhere in sports these days because all the bad teams are tanking and their fans love it. A team that thought it was going to be good and having to slowly come to terms with the fact that it's bad? That's a rare and special gift in today's sports world. I think he’s legitimately available and they’ll try and move him. He’s more likely to stay than not, just because to move a guy like him is hard and takes circumstances. But I’d bet the plus odds he’s moved if they’re like +1500. I think it's a situation where they're open to trading him if a crazy good deal came their way....but that's not likely to happen, and they know it. I DO, however, think horsefeathers like that is mainly laying the ground for how there's essentially zero chance to re-sign him.
