God bless inflation. I think the odds of the Cubs being a situation where their payroll doesn't respond to the team needs by 2009 are pretty unlikely...I hope. -
I do like the idea of awarding stuff like the MVP's and Cy Young award at some point during the series.

Um, no he's not. He's a little guy that plays shortstop. Leadoff hitters can only come from the SS and CF positions. Occasionally a second basemen can bat leadoff, but usually they bat 2nd. So I'll take Theriot batting leadoff over Pie anyday. This is sarcasm, right?

I compare it to what Larry Meyer writes about the Bears on their website. He's by no means a neutral observer, but he doesn't come close to the lap dog acceptance of everything management does, like Muskat. My point is, I'm pretty sure she got the job because they knew exactly what type of stuff she'd write, as opposed to her switching her writing style to fit the job description. She really thinks Theriot at SS is a good idea. She's not just talking it up to hide management's intentions. You have absolutely no idea of this is true or not. And what good does it do to compare her to a Bears' writer to prove your point? That implies both organizations are run the same way and expect the same thing.

Um, yes? That's not her job. She's not a journalist, she's a PR puppet. It's no different on any other team website, anywhere. Exactly. A ton of the stuff she puts out there is completely ridiculous, but it's difficult to actually gauge her knowledge of the sport since everything she writes has to be pro-Cubs and pro-organization. I doubt she's some kind of baseball svengali, but this job really doesn't give any chance to actually offer her own opinion if it views parts of this team in a critical light. Hell, last year, Izturius was "just fine" at SS. A walrus plugged into that spot would be "just fine" from her job's standpoint.

Yeah, I suppose it is. I'm not looking to make any enemies here, just wanted to point out what, to me, was an obvious misread of OP's post. And Mojo, I did concede that OP was wrong in his assessment of Dempster, but I when I hear Glendon Rusch's name, my sarcasm sensor goes through the damn roof. If you stick around, you'll notice a lot of statements along those lines made in complete seriousness.

I think people need to re-read his post and notice that he was suggestion that Glendon Rusch would be a better option. Glendon Rusch. Seriously. He said it. Yes. He did. So that automatically means he was being serious. Absolutely no other option. I mean, he said his name. Please tell me you didn't miss the sarcasm in his post. Actually, tell me you did. So I can laugh at you. You're being far, far, FAR too generous. There are plenty of people here who legitimately seem to think Dempster is overall one of the worst relief pitchers possible.

no, it generally does mean overrated though, which applies here. and rose is overrated. OMG HIT KINGZ But he was still by and large a "good" player. I think true GRIT involves distinctly middling mediocrity dressed up in a pretty, hustling package.

Peter Rose was too damn good to be gritty. There must be some kind of cutoff point.

He was excessive, the score was still 7-3. I'd have beaned him if it was a regular season game. And it's ridiculous that a guy posing for a couple seconds after hitting a homer is so reprehensible, but a pitcher getting back at him by drilling in the ribs with a fastball is just fine.

Why is it ok for people to be condescending to Asmodai/Meph/LoK but not the other way around? If Meph had said this, people would up in arms. How do you know he wasn't being serious?

He just hit a HR that happened to be the third HR in a row his team had hit that inning. That rarely happens, especially in the playoffs. I have zero problem with what he did.

Manny, is that you? You say it like it's a bad thing. If a pitcher can leap around and cavort on the mound like a madman, I see nothing wrong with a hitter taking a moment to enjoy when they've just clobbered one out of the park. Players can show emotion or that they're pumped everywhere else...except when they do what is arguably the most awesome singular display of baseball's, well, awesomeness. Bosh, I say. Flimshaw.

On the rare chance they do hit a home run, truly gritty players always only stare at the ground or straight ahead, jog politely around the bases and show no emotion whatsoever.

David Eckstein looks like he's 12, so that automatically disqualifies this. Do we need to calrify any kind of difference between "veteran GRIT" and "young GRIT?" If you've got Womack and Burnitz et al on one end of the spectrum, Theriot and Fontenot are going to be all the way at the other end. When does the power of youth end and the wisdom of age take over?
