What is the Biggest Need?

I am going to ignore nothing. I pointed out that there was a strange shift in JJ's production. I have no idea what the plans are for improving this team in 2008, but one of the big problems the Cubs had was beating LHP, and having LH hitters in the order. If you are asking what I would do, it is acquire another player (at least one) that is preferrably a LH batter who can crush LHP and hit in the clutch. Hopefully that player will hit more than 5 HR, too. If the Cubs acquire this player who will bat in the middle of the order, I wish them luck dealing JJ, or whoever. If JJ can produce over the full season like he did in the better part of 2007, only with more power - I'd take it. His power numbers went way down...his lefty numbers went way up...why do you assume his power levels are just going to jump back up AND his lefty numbers will stay, contrary to the rest of his career. Can you show me where I assumed anything on the lines of what you said. IF Jones can hit LHP like he did last year, and IF he can hit for more power - I think that it's clear that I didn't really assume he would, only pointed out that IF he could, we would be crazy not to be happy with it. Those are ridiculous huge if's to even think about counting on. -
I'd offer Hill, Marmol, Patterson, Cedeno, and Veal for both. But I think they could easily do much better with other teams if they wanted to try a package deal.

Yeah, part of me wonders if Boras just wants to see if he can get the $30 million per he's been hyping up, since the Yanks are likely the only team to pay that much. If the Yanks bite, he stays, if not, even if it's for something like $27 million, I wouldn't be surprised to still see him opt out.

I guess it comes down to whether he wants more money and a shorter contract or less money and a longer contract. Either way, he ends up with more money than God. Is he his bigger priority the highest payday or more time? I'm a little confused on something...would this just be for the next 5 years, or 5 years in addition to what still remains on this current contract? If it's the latter, there's almost no way he's not back with the Yanks.

I doubt that deal could have ever worked out given how especially stubborn the Orioles were over Tejada at the time. It likely never progressed beyond the rumor stage. -

Tracking Cubs 2008 Payroll

God bless inflation. I think the odds of the Cubs being a situation where their payroll doesn't respond to the team needs by 2009 are pretty unlikely...I hope. -
I do like the idea of awarding stuff like the MVP's and Cy Young award at some point during the series.

Um, no he's not. He's a little guy that plays shortstop. Leadoff hitters can only come from the SS and CF positions. Occasionally a second basemen can bat leadoff, but usually they bat 2nd. So I'll take Theriot batting leadoff over Pie anyday. This is sarcasm, right?

I compare it to what Larry Meyer writes about the Bears on their website. He's by no means a neutral observer, but he doesn't come close to the lap dog acceptance of everything management does, like Muskat. My point is, I'm pretty sure she got the job because they knew exactly what type of stuff she'd write, as opposed to her switching her writing style to fit the job description. She really thinks Theriot at SS is a good idea. She's not just talking it up to hide management's intentions. You have absolutely no idea of this is true or not. And what good does it do to compare her to a Bears' writer to prove your point? That implies both organizations are run the same way and expect the same thing.

Um, yes? That's not her job. She's not a journalist, she's a PR puppet. It's no different on any other team website, anywhere. Exactly. A ton of the stuff she puts out there is completely ridiculous, but it's difficult to actually gauge her knowledge of the sport since everything she writes has to be pro-Cubs and pro-organization. I doubt she's some kind of baseball svengali, but this job really doesn't give any chance to actually offer her own opinion if it views parts of this team in a critical light. Hell, last year, Izturius was "just fine" at SS. A walrus plugged into that spot would be "just fine" from her job's standpoint.

Yeah, I suppose it is. I'm not looking to make any enemies here, just wanted to point out what, to me, was an obvious misread of OP's post. And Mojo, I did concede that OP was wrong in his assessment of Dempster, but I when I hear Glendon Rusch's name, my sarcasm sensor goes through the damn roof. If you stick around, you'll notice a lot of statements along those lines made in complete seriousness.

I think people need to re-read his post and notice that he was suggestion that Glendon Rusch would be a better option. Glendon Rusch. Seriously. He said it. Yes. He did. So that automatically means he was being serious. Absolutely no other option. I mean, he said his name. Please tell me you didn't miss the sarcasm in his post. Actually, tell me you did. So I can laugh at you. You're being far, far, FAR too generous. There are plenty of people here who legitimately seem to think Dempster is overall one of the worst relief pitchers possible.

no, it generally does mean overrated though, which applies here. and rose is overrated. OMG HIT KINGZ But he was still by and large a "good" player. I think true GRIT involves distinctly middling mediocrity dressed up in a pretty, hustling package.
