  1. OK, this move I like. Does it actually mean anything? I love the idea of Maddux being more involved in the team's management/coaching once Lou and Hendry are gone.
  2. Ugh, that's sad if it's true.
  3. Seems like a pretty quiet hot stove season around MLB in general. The Cubs don't seem to be much of an exception in that regard.
  4. The already shattered hearts of Expos fans. Poor bastards: http://progressiveboink.com/archive/expos.htm
  5. I'm sure Dan never said he was certain that the Bulls would get Kobe. Did Dan run this newest rumor by Terry and "his guy"? Terry's guy is the one who tells us after a big story breaks that he knew it would happen all along. This is what I dug up regarding Bernstein and Kobe. I listened to the Score all day pretty much the 2 days that story was at its peak, and while my memory is a bit hazy, I seem to remember him saying something like "Kobe to the Bulls is extremely close/Kobe just needs to approve it/Kobe will be a Bull". Which was all basically the case until Kobe himself nixed it because he didn't want Deng to be traded. It's not like Bernstein was propping up some flimsy rumour that didn't have anything to back up.
  6. I really didn't think anyone would replace Mariotti so soon in terms of a Chicago sports press figure being SO infuriatingly stupid and set in their stupidity, but hey, Kaplan actually pulled it off a while ago. It never ceases to amuse me how he basically screams at anyone he's interviewing over the phone on CTL like they're using some archaic technology were he can't be heard otherwise. Everyone else on the show speaks normally and then you have this bald lump of skin bellowing like a spastic idiot.
  7. I'd actually come around to wanting the Bulls to bring TT back, but if it means getting Bosh, hey, go nuts.
  8. I completely disagree. First off, we don't know what all these changes are, when they will happen, or if they will be the right ones. Second, STL has proven they can dominate the division without being the big dog, that is meaningful. I don't see how anybody can look at 6 division titles and 1 wild card win while fighting an uphill battle against a stronger franchise and not think it's an indication of what would happen the next ten years. Why not? It's not like the decade before is a lock to predict the next decade. If that was the case then the Cardinals should have been horrible in the aughts. The Cubs have turned over their ownership and will be turning over their management early into the decade. The Cardinals lost Jocketty after 2007. Are they going to lose LaRussa after next season? Even if that's not a huge deal what that could mean is that Duncan is gone after next year. The last decade is by no means a model for how this decade will go for these two teams.
  9. Sure, but it's almost a moot point to bring up the last 10 years as if they're an indicator as to how the next decade will go given the significant changes that have occured and will continue to occur over the next couple of years.
  10. Hey, that's baseball. The Cubs have a new owner and Hendry isn't going to be around for much of this decade and even his crappy contracts can't be used as an excuse to be saddling the team after a couple of years. What happened over the last 10 years isn't any kind of sure thing to happen again over the next 10 years.
  11. Well, those are actually pretty different boats unless the $50-$30 million gap between the two teams' payrolls gets closed.
  12. Nobody is saying it can't happen; people are talking down the idiots on the ledge acting like the Cardinals are a lock to run away with it because of this signing. It's simply not a sure thing.
  13. How about to get out of the area? In Chicago, he'd be around the same fan base and same media that tore him up while he was ND. Which means that he can also potentially throw that back in their faces to somedegree if he joins the Bears as the OC and their offense looks and performs better.
  14. What in God's name are you possibly basing this on? The Cubs were worse than the Cardinals in 2009 and have gotten worse at baseball this offseason and one of their best players will miss a month to open 2010. I didn't think that was such a controversial statement. The Cubs were worse because two key players drastically underperformed and another missed about half the season. Unless you just assume that Soriano and Soto are going to be horrendous again and the Cubs will suffer the equivalent of Aramis' shoulder injury yet again it's a completely asinine and melodramatic "woe is us" mentality. The Cards' 2009 season was arguably just as much an "everything goes their way" season as it was an "everything that can go wrong does" season for the Cubs. At this point they're two arguably average to above average teams in a bad division. Neither is the clear favorite. To assume that the Cubs will "do nothing" and they have no chance to keep up wth the Cardinals is just stupid analysis.
  15. What in God's name are you possibly basing this on?
  16. It's pretty obvious that he was asking who people would prefer to have, Sheets or Harden, if both were somehow magically a lock to be healthy.
  17. I would not mind an incentive-heavy contract for Sheets at all.
  18. Nice backhanded compliment, Ron. I resigned myself to Lovie being back a while ago but if Turner comes back...ugh.
  19. I don't think a strict platoon between Fontenot and Baker would be that bad of an option given the money currently available. It's not necessarily ideal, but there's a decent chance Fontenot rebounds if he's not having to play 3rd and basically only faces righties. Hell, even if they did sign Hudson (which I'm iffy about given his age and how old this team already is) I'd like to essentially see him platooned with Baker getting starts against lefties.
  20. God, these teams are [expletive] horrible. How the hell did the Bears win 6 games?
  21. Did Ron Turner feel like he could just dick around the first 3 quarters because it's the Lions or is he just that bad? You be the judge.
  22. Flashbacks to awesome Hester.
