Saying that Colvin has an inability to draw a walk is a bit misleading, though. He has periodically shown patience in the minors. He's just never shown patience and hit well at the same time. Hey, if you can't do it and hit you're still basically screwed. -

Its not about sure things. Its about having that dependable set up man to get you to the closer. For the past 3 years, at least for the most part Marmol has been that guy. Now hes the closer, and while I dont mind a lot of the guys we have as middle relievers or mop up men, theres not a one Id trust to consistantly take a 1-2 run lead from the 8th to the 9th. I dont mind Grabow despite his foolish contract, which is hardly his fault but hes not that guy. Marshall or Silva? I dont think so either. There more long men if your starter burns out early. Then theres the pool of Stevens, Gaub, Berg, Samardzjia, Parisi, Caridad and maybe even Cashner. Granted, I wouldnt be surprised if at least one of these guys gave us a pleasant surprise as Marmol did in '07, but Id feel more comfortable with another vet, and at something like 1.5 mil, Calero would have been a nice gamble. Waste of money. Why spend so much more gambling on a player when you can do it for much cheaper using someone already in the system? I'll never understand why some people are so quick to dump money on the most unreliable roles in baseball.

Yeah, it's unusual when teams have more than one "sure thing" in the bullpen. It's definitely a luxury if that's the case, and it's either the result of lucky development from within or paying way too much to make it happen.

Colvin is going to have hit out of his mind to actually be a starter. I'm not rooting against the guy, but the odds of him being an MLB starting OFer with his inability to take a walk aren't very promising. It's more likely that if Colvin is starting in the OF for the Cubs on a regular basis then the Cubs are in a bad, bad way. I'd be very surprised if he has a ceiling beyond 4th OFer (which still could be very useful). -
What teams typically have a "handful of awesome arms" for their bullpen? Maybe you meant to say "a couple," since that's infinitely more realistic and even then isn't the norm. The Cubs have more than enough in house options to cycle through the bullpen before anyone even needs to think about wasting money or trade bait to strengthen it.

I never understand how people make these declarations like it's a sure thing. Yeah, bullpens fluctuate all the time so it COULD be bad, but it's not like it should be assumed they'll suck because of last year. Outside of the Gregg experiment the bullpen was fine last year. -
Guzman is Guzman. Anyone pinning any kind of hopes on him is pretty loopy to begin with. If he's there, great. If not, oh well.

On the game of baseball itself? Very easily. On society as a whole? Not so much.

I don't mind stealing in critical situations with the right people, but the Cubs' philosophy seems to be the opposite of that.

Sure, but it's still a terrible point because your roundabout argument, even with the caveats, is to dump this on Cutler so you can declare him as not being worth the cost after one year with a crappy team. All of those numbers, including the picks, are not hinged on him. Hell, you break down the picks and a good portion of them are the result of crappy routes and running by the receivers or bad luck bounces (though nobody is saying Cutler doesn't have an obvious issue with trying to force plays, especially in the red zone). It's telling that you keep trying to make your points as broad as possible without breaking down what actually happened or comparing/contrasting them with anything that counters them.

What you do know is very little. That immediately calls into question the conclusion that your theories and assumptions can be characterized as "perfectly reasonable". I prefer "completely speculative", personally. We know plenty. Thinking that there's something horrible that Milton did that has been totally hidden and necessitated his being moved is not realistic given who runs this team, how this team is run and how they've dealt with variations of this issue in the past.

Forgive me for thinking that when a quarterback leads the league in interceptions, that should be the defining portion of his season. Yeah, him still managing to also throw more TD's than he has a in a season plus 3600+ yards with an all but non-existent OL and running game and average group of receivers isn't important at all. Nope, it's just about the picks. That's all that matters.

Hmm. CCP making pretty much the exact same point I did (and notice I never once called Cutler a "bust"), yet no hysterical "I can't believe this guy" responses. You're not saying anything close to the exact same thing. So what have I said that's different from what he said? You specifically said you'd rather have 2400-yard, 15-TD, 10-pick seasons.

Saying I don't think 2 first-round picks was worth it and that there's a good chance he's never a "franchise" QB is over-the-top negative? Because of the nature of your argument. Your entire case hinges on the picks. You're ignoring everything else and making ridiculous declarations (look at the horrible hypothetical seasons you said you'd welcome) to stick to your point. You're well beyond simply saying "they overpaid."

That's the worst cop-out in a discussion possible. Of course we weren't there. But we can make perfectly reasonable theories and assumptions based on what we do know and common sense.

Again, this is where we'll have to respectfully disagree. I've seen too many Lovie Smith teams win seven to nine games with ball control. Read: phenomenal defense and special teams. Funny how much better a defense looks when the other team isn't given the ball in great field position 26 times through picks. Actually, Cutler's most obvious problems with his picks is giving them up in the red zone, which is more often than not give the other team horrible field position. But hey, that's the same thing as giving them great field position on all 26 picks, right? Exactly!

Because I want Cutler to be a lot better than Favre, and Manning threw his his 28 picks as a rookie at age 22. He only broke 20 once after that. You mean when he threw 23 at age 25? OK, gotcha, that's fine, but 3 more picks a year later is a disaster. What the [expletive] are you talking about?

That'd give us 2400 yards, 15 touchdowns, 10 picks? It'd be close, but yeah, I'd probably take that season over 3600, 27,26 A dozen = 12, but close enough, I guess. 2400 yards, 17 touchdowns, 12 picks. Either way, congratulations, the Bears probably just went something like 4-12 or 3-13.

actually, no he didn't. but favre is the single seasons packers' leader, peyton with the colts (unitas is second and third), tarkenton with the vikings, sonny jurgensen with the eagles, stabler with oakland. do want a list of great quarterbacks who have thrown 26 ints or more in a single season? In the modern era, in their age 26 season? Sure. Peyton and Favre don't play in the "modern era?" And why is age 26 so ciritcla to the equation?
