  1. They have a very long way to go if they're going to overtake the Cubs/Cardinals. I think you're drastically underestimating this.
  2. That's just how the schedule falls this season. It has nothing to do with whether they're still rivals or not. They still play each other the same number of games.
  3. Good point. It's just how you choose to view a rivalry against a team. More recently, the Cardinals have face the Mets in bigger games then the Cubs. Right, but that's seemingly different than the Cubs/Cardinals rivalry. The Cubs and Cards have such a long history and they play each other so often and they essentially share the same "home area" once you're outside the Chicago area. I'm not saying that the Mets and Cards playing each other is meaningless, because you'll still find plenty of Cubs fans that view games between the Cubs and Mets as a big deal, but it's simply not the same as what exists between the Cubs and the Cardinals and their fans. In fact, they way you're coming at this makes me think of how one-sided the non-rivalry between the Cubs and Brewers is because it seems like many Brewers fans are trying to prop it up into some kind of big deal while most Cubs fans don't look at it as much of anything unless both teams are in the playoff hunt. If some Cards fans are looking at the Mets as their "new rivals," well, it's definitely one-sided.
  4. I suppose, though you're going to struggle to find many Mets fans that are going to say that Cardinals are more of a rival to the Mets than the Phillies, and I really haven't heard or known any Cardinals fans until now that would say the Mets are the Cardinals rival over the Cubs. You simply don't see many teams having their main rivals outside of their division.
  5. Fukudome should be batting 1st, Byrd should be batting 2nd, Soriano should be batting 5th and Soto should be batting 6th.
  6. That was just one year. I'm not sure how that really fostered a rivalry from Cardinals' fans perspectives since the Cardinals actually won and true rivalries seem to be borne out of repeated bitter competition. I know that most Mets fans don't look at the Cardinals that way.
  7. I look at the Brewers the same as I do every other team in the division that's not the Cardinals: they're just there and the Cubs need to play them (and beat them) more than other teams.
  8. Is that not a DePaul Blue Demon? If it was he wouldn't be up to his nose in just ice.
  9. You'd think Garvey would be forgiven and invited to celebrate like Bartman then.
  10. I figured it was '84, but I'm not sure why they picked that over '69. I guess Santo clicking his heels is supposed to represent that and they felt they had to squeeze in '84 somehow. Seems like the artist dropped the ball by not including a black cat somewhere.
  11. It could only be dominated by a crappy player. Unless you expected the votes to be more evenly split amongst all the crappy players.
  12. This thing raises more questions than it answers. Why the Padres effigy? Yeah, I know the historical reason, but why them over any number of other teams? Is it supposed to be someone in particular?
  13. Unless there's something that spells out this piece of insanity, my money is on a terrible "when pigs fly" visual pun, especially given how corny the rest is.
  14. Oh, come on. There were plenty of Murton fans here, but few who thought he was a "star." And the Hart comment is just ridiculous. Please show me anyone here who thought he'd be more than a serviceable reliever/spot starter/5th starter at best.
  15. The devil is frozen in that "puddle" = Hell freezing over. The leprechauns and the gold and the rainbow and whatnot are saying how much luck (or how improbable it would be, hence the goats flying (AKA when pigs fly), the unicorn and the CTA being flush with cash, etc.) it would take for the Cubs to win it all. Plus Steve Goodman in heaven.
  16. I still stand by that if they're at least 5 games out of it at the deadline that it should be the motivation to start selling. 5 games+ back in a division this bad while spending this much money on a team this relatively old would just be inexcusable. The window is all but closed. Break up the band and move on.
  17. Teams don't seem as willing as they once were to "mortgage the farm" for rental players like Lee. They don't have to to make convincing him to wave his NTC a plus for the Cubs.
  18. which is the entirety of his point. I guess. I mean, it's a matter of pick your poison given that it's the final roster spot. I don't see why it's so surprising given the options.
  19. I agree, unfortunately...but I can dream.
  20. Well, they're all pretty crappy players.
  21. I voted for him. He's probably the best option, but he sucks. That was my point. I'd rather have kept an actual SS on the roster in Blanco. I'd be fine with keeping a bat that has limited defensive ability, the problem is none of these guys have a bat. Yeah, but they don't have Blanco anymore. Given the craptacular options available in the poll I don't see why it's so questionable or surprising that almost everyone picked Tracy.
  22. So why don't you vote otherwise?
  23. I really hope the Cubs trade him. Having Hendry this year is arguably a good thing if they end up trying to move what they can by the deadline if they're out of it. Hendry's been pretty good with trades, and they deflect the fan wrath over moving guys like Lilly, Aramis and (hopefully) Lee when they then fire Hendry after the season's done.
