  1. i'm glad only because he's likely to exercise his player option after this season, and i don't want the cubs paying 14.6M next year to a guy who doesn't have it any more. we already have enough bad contracts. That's hardly a bad contract.
  2. I think it's less you find people who hate the Cubs as opposed to just really not liking Cubs fans, which is completely understandable.
  3. Probably that and some kind of mandatory salary base, too.
  4. People have been saying that for about 90 years now. Well, they did have a stretch from the mid 60's to the mid 70's and from the early 80's to the early 90's where they weren't very good. The Yankees have been down before, but they always get right back up. Blips on the radar. Anyone hoping for Yankees to go through a sustained period of truly bad play are really longing for a serious outlier, especially with how they have their money set up now.
  5. People have been saying that for about 90 years now.
  6. Clearly, yes. This isn't complicated at all. Nobody's dogging him for wanting to play with really good or great players. It's how he went about it and willfully chose the one situation where he'd be taking a backseat despite his talent and his role as a player to this point.
  7. I'd still chance it. While 2010 is a bust, 2011 actually doesn't have to be, and I think moving Byrd would mean they'd hang on to Fukudome. I think moving Fukudome (in the right deal) would be more beneficial to the team both right now and in the long run. Like I said, if someone is calling up the Cubs with an amazing offer for Byrd there's no reason for them to not take it.
  8. Everyone is compared to Jordan. But it gets magnified in Chicago. Sure Bulls fans would have loved LeBron, but he would have always taken a backseat to Jordan until he won his 7th title in a red and black uniform. No. If it was closer to the Jordan era and the Bulls hadn't sucked so much since he was gone and he was still some kind of presence with the team, OK, fine, but as it stands he's gone and it's been too long since the Bulls were legitimate contenders. Anyone here focusing on comparing him to Jordan moreso than is already done everywhere else is just trying way too damn hard.
  9. Because they don't have anyone to fill the position? If someone is offering a great offer now, fine, but the Cubs could easily sell high with him later. Soriano-Fukudome-Colvin? Brett Jackson might be called up by September 1st as the thread on NSBB speculates. Calling Jackson up to get a look-see when rosters expand is one thing; calling him up with the intention of keeping him up as a starter or 4th OF next year isn't very wise, and dear Lord, Colvin is still nowhere near showing he should be a starting OF. Focusing on trading Fukudome right now makes a lot more sense than moving Byrd just because he made a nice defensive play at the ASG. Again, the Cubs could easily sell high on Byrd by the deadline next year, or even in the off season between 2011 and 2012.
  10. Isn't that last part redundant? Which of the other cities were ones where he WOULDN'T be "running" them in terms of being a celebrity? lebron being in new york or chicago is not even close to what it's going to be like with the "superteam" in miami. different types of city, different team situation. seriously, if you're young and rich, miami is probably about as good as it gets. Eh, it's not like he couldn't hang out in Miami if he played for another team, and being young and rich and hugely famous in NYC is pretty epic and unique. I think what weighs into this is that you can be young and rich and still the beloved superstar in Miami even if the impossible happens and something goes wrong with the team since so few people give a [expletive] whether the team is good or bad down there. Let's face it, we're talking about LeBron here. It's not like he's limited in terms of where he could go and own a city. I think what you're describing means a lot more to a relative zilch like Bosh.

  12. Isn't that last part redundant? Which of the other cities were ones where he WOULDN'T be "running" them in terms of being a celebrity? And where wouldn't be people be talking about him? I don't think it can be understated how much this actually takes the focus OFF of him, relatively speaking. If something goes wrong, well, it's not his team; it's Wade's team or even arguably Riley's team before it's his. That's not saying that nobody would be pointing fingers at him if the Heat fucked things up, but compared to going to NYC or Chicago or staying in Cleveland he's able to defer pressure and focus onto other people.
  13. But if he stayed with Cleveland and he never won a championship, wouldn't his fame take a good hit? There's risk that he wouldn't win no matter where he went. He'd still be an amazing player wherever he went and he'd be THE guy on that team...except if he went to the Heat. Obviously, he still has a ton of talent, but his role is potentially going to change drastically, and this is already being looked at as clearly being Wade's team. He must have realized that would have happened, and that's what's so lame about it. He basically weighed all of his options and decided, "yeah, I'm cool with being the second in command."
  14. Hopefully this is true. What if the alternative is Sandberg? Death.
  15. Yes, it's obviously it's all about his ego...that's why I'm so let down by it. OK, so he wants to be famous, hey, great. It's that he opted the relatively easy route to more fame while not maximizing his talent that seems like such a cop out to me. He could be one of the most famous athletes in the world AND one of the very best, but he's willing to let the latter fall relatively to the wayside for the sake of the former.
  16. I keep thinking it has to be Alfonso given the socks, but if it's him someone dubbed his dialogue because it's way too accent-free.
  17. Who needs Ichiro when you can have a Fukucopter? Don't humor him.
  18. EWWWWWWWWWWW, [expletive] GLEE, WHY?!?!? The backlash against that show can't start soon enough.
  19. Someone apparently rousted Harrison Ford from the grave.
