I like Dunn. I have no problem signing him to a 4-year deal provided it isn't crazily expensive and Hendry isn't tossing out NTC's as per usual. -

You can live with a bullpen that gives up a run or two too often if your offense isn't struggling to muster up more than a run or two over the course of the entire game.

Yeah, as a kid I was never a huge super fan of Sandberg. It's not like I disliked the guy or rooted against him, and I was certainly glad he was on the team...but he was so damn boring. I remember liking guys like Dawson and Maddux and Grace and Sosa a lot more.

Perhaps if Dibble would have actually listened to his arm when it was telling him something wasn't right instead of pushing it beyond it's limits, he could have pitched effectively after the age of 28. Or just have a career longer than 7 seasons. -

Niether did Joe Girardi when he took over his first team. Not a Sandberg supporter but that argument might be out Wasn't Girardi bench coach for Torre for a season before becomming a manager? I wouldn't call that extensive major league experience, his promotion was a bit of a shock, but supposedly the catcher makes the best managers You're missing the point; Girardi had at least some experience as a coach in the bigs before becoming a manager. I'd feel a lot better about Sandberg if he did the same and spent 1-2 seasons as a coach on the ML level before taking over.

I thought Lou retired yesterday. Surely Quade is smarter than placing the guy who gets on base more than anyone in the 8th spot. And while I don't think Colvin is a serious contender for 1B next year, there is no reason for Xavier Nady to play there anymore. Let the kid play 1B to see if he can handle it. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Actually, it wouldn't be a bad idea to get Nady plenty of playing time to see if they wouldn't want to sign him back. If their intention is to move Fukudome then bringing back a healthy Nady could be a smart move.

Once again, it's not just his HOF speech. It's basically every interview he's given over the last few years and the articles he wrote for Yahoo. And that he's never coached at the ML level. That should be the most glaring and obvious argument against him.

Agreed on the final point, but you can easily make a player like Reynolds much less valuable or invaluable if you try to make him into an Aramis-like player.

The bunt isn't the main point. The main points are his naive and unrealistic rhetoric regarding playing the game "the right way" and with "the right type of players" and his complete and total lack of coaching experience at the MLB level.

If you are that player, why not make sure that you work on other parts of your game though. That's what Pujols, Sandberg and Dawson all did. Instead, these other guys, while valuable in some ways, don't improve themselves in the other parts of baseball. It's not that simple. Some guys simply have inherent weaknesses in their game that they fortunately can overcome or compensate for with strengths in other areas. It's simply not realistic to think that every player can or even should be an "all-around player."

He's still an extreme outlier. It's simply not realistic to expect most players to be anywhere near the type of player that Pujols is, so why not point to the legion of other players that perform multiple roles well, or at least serviceably? Pujols is basically a freak, so comparing other players to him is pretty pointless, plus players like Howard and Dunn have shown time and time again how extremely valuable they can be, so why dismiss them as if they're something young players should actively avoid becoming if their strengths ultimately show them to be that type of player? Some players simply have obvious strengths and glaring weaknesses instead of being "balanced" players, and Sandberg's rhetoric often times sounds like he wants to essentially "force it" if a player isn't one of those all-around workhorses.

This is a bizarre tangent. Yes, I'm sure Lou Piniella was ware of the fact that his very old mother would someday die. Now it's come to the point that his mother likely is dying and he'd rather spend his time with her as opposed to sitting through the last 6 weeks of his contract managing a truly wretched baseball team. I'm not sure why anyone would fault him for that.

What did it sound like when Lou "gave a crap" in the press conferences? Because he's been the same cranky bastard that everyone is too chicken [expletive] to question that he was the first three years.
