    It's weird when someone says they think the whole coaching staff stinks, as if they wanted Sandberg promoted to improve it.

    He had a 1.2 WHIP. Eh, I hadn't checked his numbers since the trade so all I remembered was his Cleveland WHIP this year. Still not worth it unless he's very cheap. I think he's worth it if it prevents them from signing somebody else to a 3 year deal, not to mention if it sends Cashner back to the rotation. They are going to sign somebody for the bullpen. Why not a guy who can conceivably pay for himself with the nostalgia sales? I'm just going in blinders on and pretending like they won't spend a dime on the bullpen. I can dream, can't I?

    Yeah, you have to REALLY ignore a lot to look at his time with the Yankees as indicative of him being a smart bullpen signing. It was almost a miracle that he didn't give up more runs with as many guys as he put on base. That's a very bad sign for an aging reliever.

    But there are two different versions of that person. The real money is in exploiting those people who really enjoy being in a place nobody else can get in. Yes, I know.

    No kidding. I don't think for a second the Bears would sign Moss if they could, but it's frustrating to hear that mentality parroted in the press.

    That has already happened. Attendance was only down about 100,000 this year (and roughly 650 people per game). That followed a roughly 130,000 decrease from 2008-2009. Attendance has been down all around baseball though, so I wonder how much the decline varies from the rest of the league. They were still 4th in the NL, which is where they almost always are. Tickets sold in February based on people hoping they'd bounce back from an 83 win season and actually contend isn't the same as how many people actually showed up to games and spent money on beer, food and merchandise. Right. What we saw was a very clear step towards less people actually buying those tickets before the season starts. I highly doubt that the Ricketts are just going to sit around and wait until the team is drawing and selling crappily before doing anything.

    Yes, which is why makes much more sense that a business-oriented group of owners would look to head that off at the pass instead of digging an even deeper hole by waiting until you're seeing very empty games with tons of unsold tickets.

    Seems so pointless to go for a 4th OF when they already have Colvin. Also pointless to look for a reliever when they have so many arms in the farm that could be useful. It's not even like there are very "good" relievers out there that they should be spending money on.

    Right. Unless they're just complete morons I can't see why they wouldn't be looking to pre-emptively avoid a mostly empty Wrigley when possible.

    No, what makes no sense to me is the idea that year after year of poor ticket sales will suddenly at some point spur the owners to spend more money.
