  1. The whole "accountability" thing is much less important than the fact that Dusty liked bad decisions, poor players and overall stupidity. A lack of accountability is not why Dusty's teams failed. And you're absolutely right. Dusty was a terrible manager in just about every aspect. I'm just saying that you need a guy who can hold people accountable, because if a manager doesn't hold players accountable, eventually the players won't hold themselves accountable and then everyone will cease to give a crap. We saw it under Dusty, we saw it at the end with Lou. No, you were seeing bad/flawed players being bad/flawed and managers making bad/stupid decisions. Yelling at guys or benching them or whatever you think "accountability" wasn't going to save or fix things. Obviously, discipline has its place when necessary, but "lack of accountability" is down on the list of things Dusty and Lou were handling poorly.
  2. It's not just the beer. It's the "players manager" style. There's less accountability in general assumed in that. Francona was/is considered a players manager. Not to mention that the anecdotal lax approach to conditioning taken by some of the Red Sox players this year was one of the many scapegoat excuses. Ultimately, the GM places that on the manager, whether right or wrong. I'm not taking a position for or against that idea, frankly, with a well assembled team, I'm pretty sure that most managerial candidates won't cost or gain many wins. Right. What I'm saying is that those kind of antics have been the scuttlebutt about the Red Sox for at least the entire time Francona was running the team, and they were even hyped up after they won the '04 WS. I can buy someone saying a lack of conditioning meant their pitching went flat at the end of the season, but that general climate/attitude/whatever was pervasive the entire time he was there and it didn't seem to be too much of a detriment.
  3. I wouldn't mind at all. If they want to give Sandberg an interview over Tito, go for it. Sandberg could be wearing uniform of the Hitlerburg Kidtouchers for all I care so long as he's not managing the Cubs.
  4. We can rule out Francona. Or anyone from the Red Sox front off-....ohhhhh, riiiiiiight. It's interesting how the "beer in the clubhouse" issue only became a thing with this collapse, but when they were the "drunken idiots" winning WS it was cool.
  5. What if a bird flies through the window and hits the computer?
  6. Yeah, I could definitely see him having interest in a legacy/"name" franchise like the Dodgers as opposed to the Rangers.
  7. I'm tenting my fingers over that excellence. I forgot how many of his HR were to center. That seems to bode well.
  8. Let's say the team is not competitive for 2012 or 2013, so you decide not to waste the huge salary for those two years. What's the opportunity cost? What are you going to spend that money on instead that helps the team? Exactly. It's not like not spending $28 million on Pujols in 2012 means they can add that additional $28 million to whatever money is free for spending in 2013. It's just not spent.
  9. *Sigh* Even Len has come down with a dire case of ApprentlyPujolsorFielderwouldonlybeavailableforoneortwoyearsandthenmyseriouslyvanishordie-itis.
  10. A former roommate of mine had an Orioles' hat with the cartoon bird that was defective so that the bird's left eye didn't have a pupil. It was equal parts terrifying and hilarious and I'm still kinda pissed I didn't steal it from him.
  11. Or Sandberg's majestic, slicked back hair glistening in the sun as he wearily takes his hat off in deference to yet another humiliating loss.
  12. I've had to say goodbye to Aramis and Kemp in the last 24 hours. These are sad times. Theo help me, I need to see some lightness in the dark.
  13. Yep. I've heard that Cuban won't have to go through the MLB approval process in an auction. Wait, seriously? Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck.
  14. This is my biggest concern. I think there's a good chance he never hits the market. Yeah, I didn't know about the monster TV deal the Rangers set up last year. Those guys have money to burn.
  15. Wow; the half hour apart double post. I thought I had a stroke there for a second.
  16. WHERE THERE'S SMOKE THERE IS ALSO FIRE.
  17. It's so ironic that Lou Gehrig died of Lou Gherig's Disease.
  18. The difference between Gehrig and Pujols is not as great as you think.
  19. Wouldn't having the second team make it an easier sell to the providers? Or do the Cubs have enough cache on their own to get big checks from the DirecTV's and Dish Networks right off the bat? I honestly don't know much about this. I'm just spitballing, Mojo style. Same here. And I'm not saying the Cubs wouldn't necessarily not want another team on the network with them; I'm thinking the other major Chicago teams probably wouldn't want join in for such a start-up with WGN and Comcast more "open" in the Cubs' wake.
  20. Well, with the Cubs moving from WGN and Comcast I think you'd potentially have the other teams in town (obviously besides the Bears) wanted to look to fill that void as opposed to playing second banana on a start-up network.
  21. NO HOCKEYS ALLOWED
  22. The game through Marlon Byrd's eyes would be terrifying.
  23. Wow, that makes all kinds of sense. Wait, no; reverse that.
  24. When does the current TV deal run out? Not sure (for some reason I'm thinking 2015 or 2016), but this article from 2009 does a good job of describing how the Cubs' have been getting the shaft when it comes to televising their games: http://investorshub.advfn.com/boards/read_msg.aspx?message_id=38307405 What a mess.
