Yep. Dusty certainly didn't help, but didn't Wood already have one elbow surgery under his belt by the time DB showed up? Lots of people have surgeries under their belt and go on to have long careers. What doesn't typically happen is that a new manager comes in and rides that surgically repaired arm into the ground with 120 pitch count game after 120 pitch count game, staying in after long rain delays. I mean, Wood threw 140+ pitches early in the season that year. He threw 130 in terribly uncomfortable conditions in Miami. He didn't do anything like that the year before. Wood never would have been the picture of durability or have a sustained career of 200 IP seasons. But there's no way you can pretend he was doomed to have his career wind down as quickly as it did if he didn't have Dusty Freaking Baker stearing the ship. Of course I can. Wood had ridiculously destructive mechanics. People were predicting an abbreviated career for him even before he was drafted. Dusty was an idiot in how he managed him, but for me Prior is the obvious wouldacouldashoulda. Wood I was just waiting for to fall apart all throughout the aughts.

I mean, a guy like Hawk sucks because he's just bad. I understand people not liking King because he's obnoxious, but to say there shouldn't ever be a goofy homer in a local radio or TV broadcast is just doom bonering for the sake of being miserable.

Ridiculous. Nobody was dumber than Ron Santo. And saying "homers have no place broadcasting" or whatever is even more ridiculous. The Comcast games are local broadcasts; why the [expletive] shouldn't there be a homer color commentator saying ridiculous things?

That's wonderful. If every player in MLB was suddenly a free agent, which reliever would receive the biggest contract? The best one, right? If every player in MLB was available in an expansion draft, which reliever would be selected first? The best one, right? If every manager in MLB was asked which reliever in the league he'd pick to pitch the 9th inning of game 7, which reliever would be named most? The best one, right? Anyone here think Sean Marshall would be the answer to any of those questions? Yes, but too many would say no because he's not a power pitcher. Think of the guys who the meatballs traditionally declare to be the "best relievers."

I'll be very surprised if Volstad and Wood "essentially waste a year." And yes, dave, Marshall was pretty [expletive] phenomenal last season.
