These last four seasons run together into a big, mushy, apathetic blur outside of the brief reprieve of Castro's debut, Shark's emergence and Rizzo. I don't include 2009 just because it at least had the chance of the success of 2008 carrying over to some degree. -
Meaning what, exactly? Please tell me that this isn't part of the louder undercurrent of Cubs fans who think the Cubs should replace Castro with Baez ASAP.

no kidding. he's had 22 plate appearances against lhp. schierholtz is a good example of using a player in the right situation and maximizing his value. WSR doesn't have time to check such things.

does the fact that he's arbitration-eligible next year make him more valuable? not sure what his price tag would inflate to as Arb3, but he'd still be a good bargain at $4m or whatever given his current production. The question is will teams buy into his production enough to make an offer worth giving up one of our few productive hitters? Maybe he's another DeRosa who just needed a full time opportunity Schierholtz isn't a full time player with the Cubs.

As terrible as the team is I really have no desire to see him put on the DL or sent down; it seems like just letting him struggle through it is the "best" thing to do. I guess it's a good thing he's having these growing pains in a throwaway year; hopefully that's all they are.

Of course not. The unusual part of that sequence of events was Dempster being difficult, not how the Cubs ended up with a guy like Vizcaino.

That's not true at all. It's unlikely a team would be willing to overpay enough to justify moving him, so you'd likely only be trading him basically just for the sake of trading him. And again, they shouldn't be trying to punt next year. Since Garza, Feldman and Villanueva are all likely to be moved the smart move would be to hold on to Wood.

Uh, I really hope/assume they're not planning on trading Wood. They do need to actually try and field a team next year that isn't completely horrible, stunning as that concept may be.

It really doesn't matter if they do or not; The Plan doesn't hinge on the paltry, expensive return they'd get for a year of old, breaking down Soriano. It doesn't hinge on it, but every little bit helps. THE POINT, o obtuse one, is that Castro having a bad year and Soriano having a bad year, in 2013, are vastly different things. If Soriano stinks the rest of the way it really doesn't impact things. If Castro stinks, they're fucked.
