  1. Astros actually gave up quite a bit for Randy Johnson, IIRC. That was a different era, though. Meh. Guillen certainly hurt, but Freddy Garcia was Freddy Garcia. For a team in contention it certainly wasn't that bad at all.
  2. Just for context in the Beltran deal: the Astros gave up John Buck and Octavio Dotel. The A's gave up Mike Wood and Mark Teahen.
  3. They also gave up a lot less because they traded for someone at the end of their deal. The Marlins would come out with a lot more if they trade him in the offseason or this year if they fall off.
  4. That's two whole years before 2019! When the hell did Kyle get so optimistic?
  5. What team would give up the insane haul it would take to land Stanton without it being all but a sure thing that they could lock him up?
  6. For future use: http://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s--AhRtvCGW--/c_fit,fl_progressive,q_80,w_320/cvqa5o0lnqinkbqqwszn.gif
  7. Hahahahaah! It's the cooler way to spell it.
  8. Bill Russell, Bobby Orr and Tom Brady are all Boston/NE sports legends who have played great and won championships. Each also represents a different sport. If you're complaining about Byrd not being there, then take issue with him picking Russell, not Ortiz. Auerbach was a coach, and again, involved in a different sport; he didn't pick any other coaches, and Ortiz plays baseball. Clemens didn't win a WS with the Red Sox. Williams didn't win a WS with the Red Sox. How do you not see the stupid formulas he's using with this insipid little piece?
  9. Gnnnngngngngngngngngngngngngggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg. You are like a walking aneurysm. In this hypothetical trade, it is unlikely the Cubs would part with what it would take to get him unless he came with an extension or, at the very least, that they were sure they had the money needed to throw at him. How do you not see this.
  10. Was there....contact?
  11. Ricketts = http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Ep-Z85YdmMg/TMWzVL6L9VI/AAAAAAAAJjk/AKYjkYqf328/s400/01a.jpg
  12. Look at it this way: they want to sign Tanaka, they fail to sign to Tanaka. It really sucks, but at the end of it they're still in the same position when they started. Trading for someone like Stanton and then not re-signing him clearly puts them in a much worse spot than where they started, so why in God's name do you think they would do that unless they essentially had a guarantee from the Ricketts that they'd be able to throw all of the money at him to keep him?
  13. Pretty sure that if they're doing a huge trade like that it's with the idea that they can extend him and would spend whatever it takes to do so. Just a hunch. Missing out on FA is one thing; not paying a guy that you shipped out a bunch of good parts for AND then not signing him two years later is just stupid. That you think they'd make a move like that without being confident that they'd have the resources to keep him is absurd.

  15. 780? Nice, joining the Bears. Will the games also be available on 105.9 FM?
  16. Clearly he's talking about Boston sports greats that have also won championships. Way to meatball, meatball.
  17. Stanton is basically the dream of what we hope one of those guys turns into. Exactly but in this scenario we get Stanton for 2 seasons. Is that worth selling out a lot of what has been built? It would be nice to add a bat like that, but it would be for a limited, short time improvement. If the Astros added Stanton would they be playoff contenders? of course not. Right now we are the worst team in baseball, its time some people stop thinking we are that close to winning. As far as Stanton goes, if we want him long term, it makes more sense to bring our guys along, and then try to get him as a free agent after 2016. He is the type of bat that could put us over the top, but we aren't close enough to the top yet. Holy hell, you think they'd trade for Stanton just to have him for two years and they'd have no desire to extend him? How could you possibly think that? Stanton is a 24-year old monster; he is exactly what this team needs. If he can be had without trading both Baez and Bryant the Cubs absolutely need to be in on it.
  18. 30 years old??? I guess we could use him for a year before flipping him for prospects. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nb-pTi4EzYM/TfrSOSgJ-vI/AAAAAAAAEdo/LOY4q9dF8_4/s640/LKKDSFAD.gif
  19. LET ME DRIVE THAT [expletive] CAR.
  20. I agree but I can see their point, everyone here are Cub fans so maybe that's where it comes from. But they are also presumably Blackhawks fans. You remember the Blackhawks, the team that has won two of the last four Cups and 12 playoff series in the last six years, including one against our biggest rival last year when they were down 3-1? But they are also Bears fans -- that team skating to the playoffs until their QB goes down in crushing fashion. And Bulls fans -- that team setting up for a multi-year run at the playoffs only to see it all ripped away mercilessly with injury. Twice. And Cubs fans. The reality of being a Cubs fan doesn't get wiped away by the Blackhawks winning a couple Cups. Only the ultimate can do that. Cut people some slack. All I'm saying. This post is the most amazingly punchable thing ever. I'm pretty sure this happened as I read it: http://gamemoir.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/renaldo-rage.gif And then I yearned to do this:
  21. Better put off any major moves until they're ready to compete. Whoops, now you're never making any major moves.
  22. Yes. Marginally. Trading some of our top talent for MLB talent would absolutely help, but cleaning out our top 5 for one player, even for a guy like Stanton, would be not be a prudent move. One player is not the difference right now, and imo, even if MLB talent is added, the Cubs need one or two of Baez/Bryant/Almora/Soler/Edawrds to make it. Though at some point, Stanton will be traded. Even if Miami were to make him a market value extension offer, I don't see any way he would accept it. They'll have to deal him sooner or later. Referring to previous conversation, Matt Kemp is a huge question mark at this point. Given his contract, I would be hesitant to give up much for him. Stanton is only 24.
  23. Yeah, no [expletive] trading for a great playing means dealing a lot of parts; it's one the reasons you want a good farm system, so don't give this garbage like they should get all gunshy now. [expletive], neely, you make me want to hurl things through things.
