    You know. After thinking about it a little bit, I wouldn't mind Meche. I'd certainly prefer Lilly, but if we can get Penny (IF IF IF IF) or something like that, it wouldn't be upsetting to me.

    Clement is actually a fair comparison. I didn't realize that. Kind of nice to have a player work out in an acquisition, even if it is at the cost of Dontrelle Willis... I didn't realize how bad he was pre and post Cubs.

    Not to bring something up that I'm sure has been beat to death in the last 10 pages, but... seriously? Nearly 16M per year for Jason Schmidt isn't bad to you? That's awful in my eyes, especially when you look at the deal that Chris Carpenter just signed. Chris Carpenter was under team control for the next two years at a pretty low price, so he didn't have much room to ask for more. Still though, Chris Carpenter is going to make 13M for the next 5 years while Jason Schmidt is going to make 16M. Schmidt's contract is in no way a good one, not for the Dodgers that is. It's really a 4/61 deal (not 3/57, don't know where I pulled that number from) I think. That's what I read yesterday and again just now.

That's awful in my eyes, especially when you look at the deal that Chris Carpenter just signed. Carpenter signed like...3/57 didn't he? All his new deal did was guarantee 2008. The money for the first two years didn't change. Three years for Schmidt is the right amount of years, and one/two less than he was expected to sign for. It's a good deal.

    I just don't think we should sign him right now. Though, that's usually my stance on re-signing players. I don't think Zambrano is going to make himself more valuable over the course of the year. If he goes 21-6 and wins the Cy Young, he will. And he could also go 6-21 because he pitches through an injury without telling anyone. I don't think the chances for him significantly increasing his value over the course of the year are great.

    Hope they take him up on it. If we miss Lilly AND Meche, what does that mean for us? (And don't just grumble Marquis, I am sincerely curious) Here's how the chat went with one of my cards fan friends just now: Honestly, I think we end up with one of Mulder/Marquis and overpay for one of Jennings, Westbrook, or Penny -- preferably Penny.

    He pounded the ball in the second half, and his .060 IsoD is far from a disaster. Did Pie participate in any of the winter leagues? If so, how did he do? Poorly.

    Or sign Bonds and Church and have a loaded offense. Still need pitching. And if they sign Meche and Lilly, they'll still need pitching. If those are the only legitimate choices (at the prices being mentioned), I go with the kids and stack the offense. What did "going with the Kids" get us last year? About as far as going with guys like Meche will get us in 07. I agree with the Meche part, but I like taking the chance with Lilly. Then you can always try to pry away another starter via trades. Lilly and Jennings even wouldn't be enough to make this a WS caliber team. That's an average rotation and an average offense. That makes us a possible contender for a wildcard, if things break right. I think we're in the same position the Mets were in after their spending spree pre 05. We're still a year off. The guys on the market just aren't going to be enough to change that. I think Lilly, Penny, healthy Z, and second half Hill might be enough.

    i've read that lilly has told friends he wanted to go back to the yankees so who knows if the cubs can do much besides drive up the price. The Yankees worry me tremendously. If they put an offer close to ours, I'd think he'll take it. I'm not nearly as optimistic about our chances of snagging Lilly as I was before I knew the Yankees were involved. My gut tells me he's a Yankee by tomorrow morning. His agent says he meeting with the Yanks today, which tells me Lilly is saying you have one more shot to sign me or else I'm a Cub. To me, it would be no great loss. Guzman is likely to put up similar numbers to what Lilly would anyway. Lilly is about to get #2 money to post #4 or #5 numbers. Id rather we didnt waste the money. I can't speak for Hendry, but I'm absolutely not comfortable making that assumption. We don't know if Guzman can stay healthy, and we don't know if he can produce like Lilly has. Gooz has never ever pitched over 100 innings. Ever. And some of you expect him to be a starter next year? Huh? 2002: 156 IP 2006: 131 IP
