  1. it didn't come to fruition immediately but they at least had a deep run last year. unless they end up with stamkos/doughty/bogosian/tavares etc, i don't think it's really worth it for them. it might be nice to have that one guy, i guess, but they'd still be in terrible shape with or without him. he might just make the rebuild slightly faster.
  2. i dunno. while it certainly wasn't a great deal from a value standpoint, that was a team that needed players now, not a few years down the line. johnson has been good (not great) this year, but he wouldn't fix the woes with that shoddy defense. he's still quite a bit from being a top pairing guy. gleason won't ever get there, but he was better than johnson up until this season. they also got terrible oleg tverdovsky's contract off the books and got a solid player in belanger. as much as i'm super happy that deal happened, it isn't really that wretched in hindsight. and staal sucks right now too. i know he's a slow starter but man does he blow right now. they need to blow it up though. old team up against the cap...and they're not playing well. unless they win their next 10 straight or something, they've gotta look to sell soon.
  3. Gleason is a pretty solid top 4 defender actually. I liked him on the Kings quite a bit. but yeah, when your top 4 has 2 former kings, you're doing it wrong.
  4. o... the canes are terrible. just such a sloppy team. i know they're completely banged up right now but my god. such a bad team right now. i was sure they were a top 5 team in the east too. the kings played an average game tonight and, aside from 10 minutes in the 2nd, completely controlled the game. horrible.
  5. i think burke is going to force him out. he doesn't fit the whole "truculence belligerence [stupid hockey]" thing burke has been going for.
  6. i wonder if boston is going to try dangling thomas instead. they need the cap space in the next season or two badly. i wonder if anyone would even bite on thomas.
  7. he played ok tonight and made a couple of great saves, but the goals he let in were not amazing. slow to react on the cross ice pass -- or rather, just made a poor read and had bad stick position -- and the second goal just rolled off of him. not sure what's wrong with him. the talent is clearly still there and he'll probably snap out of it, but it's gotta be worrying the blue jackets quite a bit.
  8. that will probably not even be reviewed. if kessel wasn't a midget, he wouldn't have even been hit in the chin. he came back like 5 minutes later anyway. actually played pretty well. gustavsson is...good. really good instincts and anticipation, doesn't overcommit even though he moves side to side quickly. as soon as they get a decent defense, he's going to put up some pretty nice numbers. but the leafs keep losing and i get to keep laughing. good ending to the game tonight.
  9. actually they just needed an nhl defenseman that can sit in the press box.
  10. wolski i think is for real. he has tons of talent. o'reilly is a good, hard worker...he might not be productive all season, but he's going to be effective. duchene is really talented, but he doesn't have any linemates to speak of. their top line (wolski - stastny - hejduk) should be good all season -- it accounted for all 3 goals last night -- but the rest of the team is iffy. the defense might end up better than i expected, though.
  11. another great game between philly and washington. and the leafs finally won! now i can say "the ducks are so bad lmfao". and i will. frequently.
  12. Johjima was pretty decent his first couple years. He just became an old catcher. It's not just him. We all remember the early years of the decade where we were told that the Japanese leagues were better than 4A quality, and now we've seen a bunch of what would have been first ballot Japanese league hall of famers come here. Johjima had a solid offensive season, a decent offensive season, a bad offensive season, and a poor one (and he decided not to take them up on the last two $8 million per season of his contract! Someone have him talk to Soriano). The 5A thing just doesn't seem to have been earned in last two thirds of the decade. edit: but I guess this deserves its own thread in General. it's almost like johjima was aging or something. how strange.
  13. i wouldn't be shocked if he is traded. euro dman with limited physicality? under burke, he's as good as gone.
  14. the leafs are so bad lmfao
  15. the canucks have a pretty severe lack of offensive depth without dsedin and demitra. kesler is good though. i didn't realize how good he was offensively last season, and he's really impressed me to start this year.
  16. I thought the same thing. Also, if you are going to be on a network that only covers your sport twice a week, at least try to schedule compelling games on those nights i think they've done a decent job of that (wsh/bos, wsh/phi) but being stuck on two nights a week is terrible. especially considering that one of those nights is usually either monday or wednesday, and those days are terrible for hockey.
  17. several interesting matchups today. Anaheim/Boston, Philly/Pittsburgh, NYR/Washington, Chicago/Detroit, Calgary/Edmonton. Good day for the NHL. If only the NHL had a real home instead of one that broadcasts two days a week. /facepalm
  18. i like his passion for hockey but dislike literally every other thing about him. i could probably find some other cubs fan that likes hockey if you need someone to fill the void. hopefully this one won't have some weird affinity for watching videos of murders or something.
  19. i think the flyers are the most talented team in the NHL right now. or at the very least, they have very good depth. if emery holds up, i could see them winning the president's trophy. they made some mistakes last night, but i don't know if anyone is really going to shut down the capitals top line/pp unit right now.
  20. oh man this game is awesome. semin scores a beauty then richards completes the last 2/3 of his hat trick in like 20 seconds. varlamov has been only ok this season. he can make some spectacular saves but he is prone to huge mistakes too.
  21. ya i'm pumped for that one. was just coming here to say that. montreal signs MA Bergeron, lucic re-signs for 3 years in boston.
  22. i guess. there should just be a general nhl thread, i don't really see the point of making a new thread just because the season's change but whatever. lol kings
  23. Varlamov had an amazing first period. Toskala sucks and is awful.
  24. we would've made a really dumb trade
  25. i get the feeling that dan carcillo is going to drive you nuts, truffle.
