  1. Hoffpauir is so awesome. Let's see how we bungle this one.
  2. Looks like LA's on a mission to one-up their sweep from last year and make it a four-gamer.
  3. It's probably fair to qualify the point and provide that the team's front office surrounds said awesome player with a supporting cast that isn't trash. Provided there's at least one other very good player and a few good role players on his team, the greatest player of any given era should win a title or more.
  4. If they want to sign Gordon, I'm sure they could find a way to work his contract such that it fits the payroll. Provided Ben lets that be the case, of course.
  5. Only a little more than 3 months until kickoff. This has been a very long off-season.
  6. That .195 / .271 / .310 line Pie is putting up for Baltimore would really be helping the Cubs. Kinda like the .214/.267/.214 line Gathright had for us? I wasn't saying we should've kept Pie. But if you're going to have a pinch-running/defense specialist, there was no reason in hell to pay Gathright twice as much to fill a role he was worse at than a current Cub was.
  7. Why do you say that ? I like Wayne's solo renditions roughly 25,267 times better.
  8. Let's see. - Everyone here knew signing Miles, especially as basically DeRosa's replacement, was a stupid idea. - Everyone here knew that Bradley was injury-prone. - Everyone here, for the most part, could see that Derrek Lee had been declining throughout most of 2008. (I'm glad he's on the uptick right now, but he's got a long way to go before having a productive full season.) - Most here, while glad to be rid of Jason Marquis, thought it was iffy to bring in a nothing reliever for him. - Everyone here was skeptical as to why we were shedding like 5M in bullpen pitchers for no apparent reason less than two weeks in when we weren't exactly loaded with great relievers. - Most here were skeptical of Dempster's contract considering his career numbers. This isn't hindsight. For the most part, these moves were bad even in foresight.
  9. Kathleen Messmer might be the biggest wet blanket in the history of the national anthem.
  10. What a craptastic forfeit lineup. Scales hitting 2nd...I like Bobby but probably not good when you have a 31 year old rookie getting extra ABs.
  11. Sigh, looks like I'll be mediocre-at-best again this season.
  12. For one thing, it's 'Shaq had Kobe' until Kobe wins a title by himself. And for another, the best players make their teams that much better so that they win the title. Jordan did have Pippen, but he also had guys like Toni Kukoc, Ron Harper, Luc Longley and Bill Cartwright - guys that never did anything when Jordan wasn't on the court making them better basketball players. I use Jordan because I know him best, but I'm positive that all the other examples you listed, and many many more, had players that really weren't that good but were made better because they were playing with a phenomenal player.
  13. Yeah, no one seems to care that we had a guy already that could do everything that Gathright could (Felix Pie), do it better (Felix Pie), and do it for half the cost (Felix Pie), and we dumped him for absolutely nothing and for absolutely no reason.
  14. and then letting one the the very best pitchers of all time walk away Hey, wait a second, we didn't let him walk away. We retired his number, it's not like we had him for 2 pretty good years and a few mediocre-to-bad ones. Oh, wait.
  15. How in God's name can one team put together so many ridiculous fake rallies in two weeks?
  16. A subplot that very few seem to talk about is the one you just mentioned. Lee is past his prime, Soriano is about at the end of his, Aramis is soon going to be approaching the end of his. This team will still have plenty of pieces, but there's a lot of retooling ahead if we're going to compete in the coming years.
  17. Only I'm guessing they win more than zero postseason games. Like, probably at least 7.
  18. There's no source on that deal. No way it's real. Rumorpress has never been right about anything ever. You're probably thinking of HoopsWorld. If this rumor has some legs to it, we better make that deal. Not only do you shed Deng's terrible contract, but you free up a ton of money for 2010. Get it done. On top of all that, if you ask me we're a better team for next year with that deal. There is literally no reason not to do this unless you honestly believe Luol Deng is going to suddenly become a stud.
  19. If you're defending trades to the media and fans, you're probably making stupid trades.
  20. I chuckled at Reed's comment. And I'm pleasantly surprised they didn't throw the book at Z.
  21. After 2005, it was utter desperation to have a 'leadoff hitter' after the Corey/Neifi Experience, which is why we got Slappy. And I will always believe that Hendry liked Dusty, thought he'd had a run of bad luck, and would've kept him if it weren't for the little fact that fans would have absolutely rioted.
  22. I wish he would, but I doubt it. The umps hold the trump card. You get too close, they can snare ya. Boom -- 5 games, doesn't matter what actually happened. It's more than five. Hell, they gave Bradley two for a cap-bump, then started handing out two for tossing equipment around. Lou got four once for arguing, and I've never seen that before. And didn't Lee get like seven essentially for missing Chris Young with a punch? I always err on the side of more games when Cubs' suspension issues come up because that's usually what happens.
  23. But you know what else is a joke? Suspensions given to Cubs' players. You just know they'll make an example of Z and give him 7 or 8 games or something to force a missed turn in the rotation. You just KNOW it.
