  1. The Colts were God-awful in Manning's rookie year, but any moron could see the kid playing and tell he was going to be good even if he was on an awful team. He threw a lot of picks but also moved the ball for his team to the tune of 3,700 yards through the air. And then they drafted Edge James and in year 2 of Manning they went 13-3. Clausen has shown none of that. Apart from bits and pieces of the New Orleans (in NO) and Cleveland games, he hasn't shown any ability to be a difference-maker. I wouldn't mind giving him another shot - God knows I'm not ready for another Notre Dame product to be prematurely tossed out on his ass and then joked about for the next 5 years - but I can't in any way fault the Panthers if they decide that this isn't going to work, because they haven't seen anything to show otherwise.
  2. I guess that depends on whether Carolina agrees that he can be. I think it's possible, but he sure didn't go out of his way to give them any reason to believe it.
  3. Because it's depressing to watch him get killed out there, that's why. I've said repeatedly that them drafting Luck really isn't fair to him because he deserves a shot with a team whose coach hasn't quit on them and whose offensive line doesn't appear to be double agents, but the NFL is full of QBs unfairly being chucked out on their butts before they're clearly done. And I want Carolina to win games, and I think Luck's their best shot of doing that.
  4. If you take Harbaugh from us, SF, it's on.
  5. There's certainly a case to be made for Carolina trading the pick if Luck does declare. There is literally no position on the field, besides perhaps linebacker (Thomas Davis and Jon Beason are solid) that couldn't use a severe infusion of talent. And Carolina's general antipathy towards drafting a QB high (remember, Clausen was the first time they'd drafted one before round 4 since Kerry Collins was their first ever pick) would seem to be evidence that a move could be made. It's hard for me to want us to pass up Luck, though, unless someone offers a real bounty.
  6. The Carolina Panthers are on the clock. Thank you, Bengals. Please declare, Andrew Luck.
  7. I've spent most of the last hour and a half trying to figure out the Panthers' chances of getting the Thanksgiving game in Detroit next year because that will determine whether I see us get obliterated 2 or 3 times next season. (I assume I'll see the blowout losses to Chicago and Indianapolis.) Jimmy Clausen isn't good, but he deserves a chance with a professional football team, not this bunch of pathetic lunkheads coached by a guy who's more concerned with updating his resume than making sure there are 11 [expletive] defenders on the field.
  8. Frankly Pat could do a Vin Scully and do this gig by himself. He's never really needed a color guy, it was just awesome to have Ron to play off of him.
  9. I know virtually nothing about this guy, but I'm usually a proponent of getting a guy who's been a head coach if you can. I'm sure he'll be an improvement.
  10. Darin Gantt of the Charlotte Observer has been relatively adamant that while the Panthers wouldn't break the bank for a Fox extension, that doesn't mean they won't spend money. This travesty of a season is almost entirely due to the owner's desire not to have to pay people during a lockout if he can avoid it. So any talk from Peter King about Carolina being too cheap to go big, I take with a grain of salt.
  11. Tebowgasm. Fantastic.
  12. The next time Rex Grossman gets an 11th-hour start at QB I'm going to make sure I pick him up instead of Alex Smith in fantasy football.
  13. In the year when Carolina needs more help than they ever have before, it's nice that we traded the 33rd overall pick for Armanti [expletive] Edwards.
  14. It would take a boatload of patience to hold on to that pick for that long, but Charlotte does seem pretty hopeless.
  15. There's a joke about Big 10 football officiating in there somewhere.
  16. The Panthers are favored in a game.
  17. I'm getting really really sick of opposing players attacking Derrick Rose, inadvertent or not.
  18. Temple didn't do a thing ever before Golden showed up. I think that's a pretty solid hire for Miami. Whitlock has been hammering the hire. He says Temple has the biggest budget in the MAC, he's never beaten a MAC team with a winning record and has had success because he's in a big city and able to take more questionable recruits than some other programs. Seems a lot like Turner Gill to me. They were awful but then in his second year they moved to the MAC which has become terrible. Became a little less terrible, then had one good year and now took a step back this year when the MAC was again, awful. Come on Andy, you know you want to respond about Gill The Gill comparison is actually pretty fair, though Golden has had more sustained success at Temple than Gill did. It does strike me as a little odd that Miami and Florida have now both hired guys that in the words of GR are 'missing a step' on their resume. I don't know if that's a trend or if it's just because the guys who didn't skip a step didn't want the job.
  19. I think I may do that. Seems as logical as anything else.
  20. We're done with the Bucs for the year.
  21. Temple didn't do a thing ever before Golden showed up. I think that's a pretty solid hire for Miami.
  22. If the Bengals wanted Luck they should have let Carolina beat them in Week 3, because the chances of us winning again are less than zero. You could beat Arizona Only inasmuch as all things are possible. I don't think an NFL team has ever been playing worse than we are recently.
  23. If the Bengals wanted Luck they should have let Carolina beat them in Week 3, because the chances of us winning again are less than zero.
  24. Apart from no major head coach experience, it's hard to find a negative in that hire for Florida.
  25. I'm positive that logical or not, Pujols was at least somewhat in the minds of the Cubs' brass when they gave Pena a 1-year deal.
