i find it hard to hate jaxon that much for his performance because of how bad most of those teams were. I freely admit I was probably directing some of my general hatred of our suckiness at Jackson. There was nothing rational about it.

I hated Hundley and I was like 13 at the time and hadn't moved past hero worship of anyone who was on a sports team yet. The only other king of the hated (with apologies to LaTroy Hawkins and a few others) is Edwin Jackson. I know he's a decent guy and it wasn't his fault he was Theo's first big FA signing here, but my God, that dude's work for the Cubs just made me angry on a visceral level unseen before or since.

I kind of see it the other way. If the owners give anything at all in the next CBA, it's going to be the ability to make more money early at the expense of making money later, so even a guy like Harper probably isn't seeing 25M-ish per year in his mid-30s if something like that comes to pass.

Rosenthal is saying he didn't want an opt-out. That doesn't make any sense unless it was to get extra money out of them. There's no reason to not want as much control as they are willing to give you. Yeah, he probably didn't want one in exchange for the record contract. Which seems like a weird objective for him given that Trout is probably going to get a bigger one in a couple years anyway.

Christ, 13 years? Obviously that's for luxury tax purposes but Bryce is obviously pretty sure he wasn't going to have a career after 36 (which, given the way of things these days, is probably a safe bet)

Edmonds' dong against STL when he bat flipped and glared into their dugout was a good one too. I've never 180'd on a player before or since like Jim Edmonds.

It does bizarrely need to be proven to fans though Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. SD having success in this hypothetical might help push some fans to side against penny-pinching owners.

That's right, I'd forgotten about Joe's Montero/Contreras chess game. As I recall, he tried that again later in the playoffs - can't remember which series - and his bluff got called and Montero made an out.

What would really be the best is the Padres doing that, being awesome, stealing the division from LA, and maybe, just maybe, helping make it so we don't have to do this stupid 3-month-long free agency nonsense in the future.

Just about all the ones I would've said are taken. I particularly have love for Schwarber's blast in Pittsburgh, one of very few times I yelled "OH MY GOD" like as the ball was hit. Javy's parking one off Lackey (already posted) on a pitch that was off the plate outside was a great 'HOLY horsefeathers' moment. Russell's Game 6 slam always gives me the fuzzies because it reminds me of how the secondary ticket market for Game 7 absolutely exploded over the next hour and I knew immediately that Cubs fans were going to take over Cleveland the next day. Montero's slam will always be kind of underrated - I think our collective psyche (mine, certainly) was shaken after giving up the lead in the top of the inning and that was another "nope, we're awesome, get ready" moment from the playoffs. While on the subject, Rizzo and Russell both breaking out of slumps with big dongs in Game 4 of that series, in LA, are also in that category. I still haven't completely wrapped my head around the fact that of the 3 Cubs walk-off slams in my lifetime (shouts to Jason Heyward), I was in the bleachers for 2 of them. Bote's was already posted, and I was also there for Soriano's in 2009. One hipster choice I have is a random spring training homer Javy hit in 2014 that went like 420 feet to nearly dead center, and I just remember seeing how hard he hit it and just bursting out laughing at how much power he had.

We would probably have to clear some payroll to afford him at a few million. I have this hope that they have left some room for a mid season trade....which a good back up catcher is probably going to be high on the list Don't think hope is necessary there. Reporting on the payroll freeze often includes a disclaimer that it includes money left aside for an addition if needed. -
Off topic, but 'dolt' is such an underrated insult.

I'm more than a little surprised either Kaepernick or Reid would agree to such a settlement, though it might make more sense if some team suddenly signs Kap in the next couple of months.

Apparently the reason they're making the change is concern over the connotation of the word 'disabled'. Admirable, although I can't say I ever even thought about it. Let's be real, baseball fans are probably still going to call it the DL.

They should be listening to any reasonable offer on everyone except Markkanen and Carter, and if someone wants to make an unreasonable overpay for either of those two, they should listen to that too.

Of course I am. Baseball is great. The Cubs should be pretty good. The organization has annoyed the horsefeathers out of me since late September, but still, baseball is great.
