  1. Like Rizzo, this makes me immensely sad. No one on Earth has ever been more fun to watch play baseball than Javier Baez and he was ours. PCA seems like good return and I'm sure I'll be happy he's here in 2025.
  2. There's no law saying the Cubs can't trade Nico (or Madrigal) plus something for pitching and sign a good SS in the offseason.
  3. There are a million things I loved and still love about Rizzo, but the fact that he was dropping horsefeathering Anchorman quotes during Game 7 of the World Series is probably always going to be my favorite single thing he did. He was all in, all the time, but never lost sight of the fact that he was living his dream. Vaccine whatever aside, I can't imagine a better face or voice for a franchise. I don't think it will hit me for a while that he's playing for another team.
  4. Counterpoint: Jason Hammel came back after we traded him to Oakland. Hammel hadn't publicly turned down a perceived lowball extension. I'd be pretty stunned if Rizzo came back. That said, someone will have to play first base for this group next year, so who knows.
  5. Alcantara is more by himself than I figured we could get for Rizzo, so that's good, but I'm still pretty despondent.
  6. FanGraphs had him ranked #30 in the Sox system as of last December. Looks like realistic best-case scenario is a reliable middle relief guy.
  7. Similarly, Nastia Liukin has talked about 'leg separation' during the gymnastics about 8,000 times.
  8. Whatever anyone thinks of the whole thing, I don't know how someone can watch her screwed-up first vault yesterday where she bailed out halfway through and basically landed on her butt and think for a second that it was best for the US team if she'd kept trying to go. Call it mental health, call it the yips (apparently it's 'the twisties' in gymnastics, which is a great word), or give her horsefeathers for it, whatever, she wasn't going to help them.
  9. Very glad I stayed up to see that. Heartwarming stuff.
  10. UT & OU officially inform the Big 12 they will not renew the grant of media rights that currently extends to 2025. They're pretending they intend to honor it for CYA reasons but they'll be in the SEC by the 2023 football season, maybe even next year.
  11. I haven't made it all the way through the gymnastics from last night yet, but it was funny watching Biles falter on both floor and vault but still pile up high scores because the stuff she does has a wildly higher difficulty level than anyone else's.
  12. It's the reason not one owner decides "horsefeathers it, if the rest of you are gonna pull this crap, I'm going in" and starts buying free agents left and right. They're very carefully vetted before they're allowed to buy the team to make sure they don't care about anything more than profit maximization.
  13. Ugh. We always have to embarrass ourselves. SMH If A&M actually had the guts to leave the SEC over this it would be petty as hell but I'd respect it. They'll end up shutting up and taking the money because no one in college sports actually has any principles.
  14. I'd love to see Notre Dame end up in the Big Ten. Not sure if there's history of ND specifically spurning the Big Ten moreso than any conference. I guess they might owe the ACC for letting them in last year, but as a midwest guy I'd prefer the Big Ten ND is tied to the ACC through 2036 when the league's grant of media rights expires, and in any case all indications are both sides like that relationship (exhibit A being the 2020 football season, as you noted), so I don't think it's going away.
  15. Chip Brown is Chip Brown, but:
  16. B1G would have to add a 16th school if they brought in KU, no? Do they save another current Big 12 school from irrelevance? Iowa State is in the AAU, for whatever that's worth, but that might ruffle Iowa's feathers. Maybe Colorado if the B1G wants to continue playing Manifest Destiny. This is all to say nothing of the fact that the current 14 B1G schools would definitely be seeing a minor hit to their per-school payouts by adding those schools, there's no way they'd be worth enough not to.
  17. Count me as another vote for Spiders. The logos would've been sweet, it would've been a cool mascot that's all their own and it had historical ties. It was perfect. So of course they went with something incredibly boring.
  18. FWIW, Pete Thamel had a pretty good column today about this, and among the things he pointed out is that from people he's talked to, Missouri is not a no, and A&M is on an island here.
  19. In addition to the academic side of it, Vandy has a history of abstaining from these votes. They did so for both A&M and Missouri. The Athletic writers have been pointing out that the SEC would prefer to present a united front. If A&M and Missouri really are this vehemently against bringing in UT and Oklahoma, the SEC likely wouldn't want to be seen as basically telling them to shut up and deal with it, even if by league bylaws they could.
  20. I miss when a topic like that could blow up for 110 pages.
  21. I know none of this matters in relation to money, but I've seen plenty of talk just in the last couple of days that Baylor to the Pac-12 and WVU to the ACC would be nonstarters. The Pac-12 takes pride in its secular identity and Baylor is a Baptist school, to say nothing of the various sports program-related horrors in their not distant past. (They probably would also not be thrilled at the academic profile of the other 3 schools mentioned.) West Virginia coveted an ACC invite when they were leaving the dying Big East and supposedly didn't get one because their academic reputation isn't good (some ACC fans still don't like that Louisville is in the league for the same reason). If the ACC did invite WVU they'd probably want to add another team to get to 16. If we continue to assume the Notre Dame thing won't happen...UCF? Maybe?
  22. The SEC is essentially 2 different conferences that happen to compete under the same umbrella as it is. (Georgia STILL has not played at Texas A&M and this is year 10 of the current SEC alignment.) If they go to 16 and keep divisions, they really will just be separate conferences with a title game between them at the end of the schedule.
  23. Would you look at that, another game where a supposedly available off the bench star never leaves the bench despite a close game where it would've made sense at almost any time to put him in.
