  1. I asked Bush a question (about Hendry's use of park factors and biometric analysis) but the moderator cut him off
  2. I just watched a video of Sveum answering some questions and one of the first things he said really made me cringe. Someone asked who the leadoff hitter was...he responded that he couldn't really say yet, although DeJesus was probably the leading candidate...sweet....then he dropped Barney's name. UGH. In what conceivable way is it a good idea to give our worst everyday hitter the most PAs on the team? For [expletive]'s sake. The other thing that bothered me about that answer was that he said he'd also take spring training performance into consideration. This came after both Epstein and Hoyer pretty firmly stated that spring training means nothing to them. I'm sure it's something they talked about during the interview, but it was one of the few disconnects I saw between management and Sveum. That and Sveum saying Campana's speed could be worth 5 wins this year.
  3. Yeah not so sure people were waiting 2+hours for Darwin Barney's autograph. I got in line for Anthony Rizzo and Brett Jackson's autograph. By the time they left I was near the front and I talked myself into staying for Darwin Barney's autograph b/c otherwise I would feel horrible about myself for waiting in line for 2 hours and not getting anybody's autograph. I did see one Asian lady who had a Barney shirt on who freaked out when she got his autograph, but other than that nobody was too psyched to get his autograph judging from the fact that about 100 people let me pass them b/c they were more interested in getting Lee Smith's autograph than Barney's. This was at the Sports Authority exhibit. Some players were also signing in the exhibit hall. I was in there around noon, and there was already a line for his signing at 2.
  4. As the other journalists took notes during Hoyer's Q&A, Paul Sullivan sat back and took photos of Ronnie Woo Woo from his phone. Despite Epstein talking about (a) wanting to lead the league in BB's and P/PA, (2) wanting to build the best scouting department in the league, and © how the Bloomberg Sports partnership allowed them to build an information system for the Cubs in three weeks similar to what took them 3 years to build in Boston, the biggest ovation he got was when he talked about players running hard to first base. People were waiting 2+ hours for Darwin Barney's autograph.
  5. Rizzo is probably starting the year in AAA anyway, he doesn't have to stay up for good until 2014, and if necessary he could start in a corner OF position for a year or two, or get traded for more value after a year in Iowa. I don't think Hoyer would leave the guy in AAA for 2.5 years. My guess is that they'd trade him. And it would still be a good trade, since he'd have more value than Cashner.
  6. The penalties from rounds 10-50 only come into play for bonuses over 500k, correct? If so, I think they should target a lot of talent that will sign for 499k. That obviously won't get you star talent, but at least it should help continue to build the depth in the system, particularly since they don't want to be penalized for next year's draft.
  7. That's not entirely true. Boozer's averages per 36 minutes are pretty good. But Thibs likes lockdown defense in the fourth to protect the lead, and there's nothing wrong with that. Noah is more concerning to me. Defense is supposed to be one of his strengths, and yet Asik has outplayed him in almost every game in that regard.
  8. FWIW It's moot at this point, but I don't think there's a huge difference between Fielder and Napoli, besides age.
  9. I only count 3 elite arms currently set for FA - Cain, Hamels, Greinke - with Anibal Sanchez as a very good 2nd tier option. After that, a 31 year old Marcum is probably the next best starter. That pitching field is thinning fast. And I have full faith that Ruben Amaro is going to give Hamels an 8-year $670 million deal I fully expect Hamels to be re-signed. I'm leaning toward thinking Cain will be extended by the Giants, but I'm not confident in saying that at all. I do think there's a strong likelihood next year's FA class consists of Greinke and Anibal and then a big gap before Marcum and (maybe) an aging Haren. Do the Phillies have enough money? I recall something about how they had one of the highest debt loads in the MLB.
  10. I'm fine with that too. I like Campana as a 5th OF as well and wouldn't be in any hurry to dump him, but he strikes me as a guy who we could give a few extra PAs to in a season where we're not contending anyway, see if he can get hot, and then see if a team will overvalue him. It was primarily a thought in response to the thought that we shouldn't give Campana consistent playing time because his upside is what he is now - a nice 5th OF. While I don't think we should give him consistent playing, I think more playing time than you'd normally give a 5th OF would be fine. I could see giving him playing time to see if he could get hot. He's the type of guy who could put up some good numbers with an irregular BABIP. However, in the Cubs case, I'd rather give the playing time to the superior trading chip (Byrd) and the better prospects (Jackson and Sappelt).
  11. I think he can actually be pretty useful as a 5th outfielder and pinch runner. Given that he has 70+ speed, and we wouldn't get someone with a plus tool back in the process, I'd just assume keep him and try to make him part of the next winning team.
  12. Right. An NFL coaching staff is much, much more important than a baseball coaching staff, but as the Bears have showed, talented coaches can only mask the deficiencies of inferior players for so long.
  13. Hope Golson is ready I'm less worried about Golson's readiness than about Kelly's being intelligent enough to play him - or anyone but Rees for that matter. Right. Golson would have been a heisman candidate if only his coach had been smart enough to play him. Should this be in green? Yeah. Golson seems like a good fit for Kelly's offense, but not that good.
  14. I'm sure he will, but my guess is that they'll hope for a rebound this year in order to build up his value.
  15. Absolutely. I can't imagine he's any different than Rizzo in Theo/Hoyer's eyes.
  16. At some point, you had to figure this was going to happen. Maybe he starts off hot and he's movable at the deadline where we eat 25-30 mill instead of the 45-50 we'd probably have to right now. Trading Byrd probably becomes a priority now though, if we want to give Sappelt and/or Campana some playing time. No need to give Campana consistent playing time. His career is as a 5th outfielder, and he should be groomed for that. My guess is that Byrd gets traded early in the season, when Jackson is ready.
  17. Hope Golson is ready
  18. That might make sense in an economics book, but we all know the real reason someone like John Grabow gets a backloaded contract is because Hendry had needs across the roster and needed to fill those holes with a limited budget.
  19. Yuck. I guess Theo thinks he could be traded for filler at the deadline, otherwise you just DFA him in September when its time to call-up the McNutts of the world? They've done enough wonderful things over the past few weeks for me not to question this. At this point, I can't see him on the major league roster. My guess is he'll spend the year in Iowa providing veteran leadership along with Andy Sonnastine.
  20. Yeah, I'd definitely give it a shot. My guess is that there's something behind the scenes we don't know about, though. Edit: Looks like he has an arthritic knee.
  21. Also notable: San Diego is where lefty power hitters (like Adrian Gonzalez...or Anthony Rizzo) go to die. Lefty pull hitters can do quite well in San Diego, actually, and Adrian Gonzalez did exactly that. There is a short porch in both corners of Petco. Adrian Gonzalez did not do "quite well" at Petco compared to his actual abilities.
  22. Another extreme groundball pitcher. I wonder if they think putting a good defense behind these guys could inflate their numbers enough to get some value in a trade later on. Or maybe they just do better at Wrigley.
  23. I don't see very much that we have acquired that would be valuable pieces for an emerging superstar. I think Travis Wood and Rizzo have solid futures, but everybody else seems to be roster depth at the ML level or ml level. Torreyes is a potential future asset as well. And the extra draft picks we've acquired + our top pick next year.
  24. Theo understood Red Sox sentiment because he was a fan of the Red Sox. We're not talking about bringing back Carlton Fisk to sign autographs. He kept a horrific player on a team whose success determined the security of his own job. A middle reliever is more important than a backup catcher, but not by much. There's no reason to not get this done. If Kerry is seeking actual money now because the thought of taking a discount to play on what's likely to be a pretty bad team isn't all that appealing to him, there is. I'd actually be glad to see him go to the Phillies (based on their chances) and I'd have to root for them to win the Series, just like I did the Yankees in 2010. Certainly a possibility, but what's "real money" to a a 34 old middle reliever? 3 million? If he doesn't want to play for the Cubs because they're going to be bad, that's fine, but I'm somewhat skeptical given his past willingness to stay with the Cubs. If somebody is offering 2 years at 6-7 million, they should just match it. Chances are he'll be a spokesman for the organization for a long, long time.
