    If that counts (and it probably shouldn't, because the obvious implication is favorite over-the-top deadline moves) but a big freaking star next to the Sean Marshall fleecing. A fleecing? I was (and still am) a fan of the move, but Sean Marshall has been really good, Sappelt has been awful, Torreyes has just been OK and Wood's peripherals suggest he's not quite as good as he's been recently.

    with all due respect, we need a large infusion of pitching into our system. True, but I feel like having strong pitching in the minors is more of a numbers game. If the Cubs implement the same strategy in the draft that they did this year, enough will stick and become legitimate prospects. Getting hitters like Olt, Rizzo and Baez is much more difficult.

    He also has more power and patience, and is better on defense. He fits our front office's philosophy much better then Vitters.

    Because the Diamondbacks wanted a third baseman But they just traded Youk in order to give Middlebrooks the full time job And Middlebrooks will cost 33M less over the next 3 seasons. And he plays a more in-demand position. And he doesn't have injury concerns. Interesting that Will Middlebrooks now had more trade value than Justin Upton. I guess we'll ignore the fact that Justin Upton is less than a year older and already has two seasons in the majors of OPS's near .900. Or that the Red Sox would truly care about Upton's extra cost.

    Garnett was a rumor at the time. Curry was closer to reality Curry formally committed to DePaul. There was also Ronnie Fields (I think), Lance Williams and Steven Hunter.

    Baez isn't sticking at SS. Should we move him too? Baez will eventually become too big for SS, Geiger is physically not able to field third base like a professional should(.884 fielding percentage, stiff movements, lack of range). There's a difference. We wouldn't put Vogelbach at 2B for a season just to prove that he can't handle it, similarly there's nothing wrong with being honest about Geiger not being able to handle an infield position that isn't 1B. While there's little doubt he will eventually be moved, he's barely played 100 professional games, and he's only played 28 this year. I think it would be worthwhile to let him try 3B for at least a full season, if nothing more than to be able to get into a normal routine and not have to learn new positions in the middle of the year.

    After his struggles in EXST, I'm fine with it, for now. But I'd like to see him bypass Boise and get to Peoria, within a month. I think it's possible anyway. I really don't see a rush for that. He's young. I'm fine with him simply going to Boise, which I think he should do at some point this summer. Let Vogelbach/Candelario and Co. develop together. No rush, IMO. I'd rather see Stephen Bruno go up to Peoria to be a 2nd/SS/3rd guy, and kick Geiger to part time 1st/part time corner OF/part time 3rd. Why would you want to move Geiger off of 3rd for someone like Stephen Bruno?

    Like SSR said, they can ask all they want but there's no chance they get a Castro talent for Upton. There's very, very few talents like Castro anyway (Harper and Trout and that's about it) and Castro is more valuable than Upton anyway (cheaper, more team control, no injury concerns). If they demand Castro, I'm asking for Upton and probably at least one of their elite pitching prospects (Bauer/Skaggs/etc). They don't have to get a Castro talent, we're just talking about the Cubs' ability to trade for him. There's a large gap between someone like Castro and someone like Garza + Brett Jackson. The problem is that the Cubs don't have anyone in that gap for the D'Backs (Rizzo could headline a deal, but I doubt the D'Backs would be interested considering they have Goldschmidt). A team like the Pirates could offer Taillon and Cole. The Red Sox could start with Middlebrooks. The Cubs don't really have anyone like that (again, besides Rizzo).

    The fact that so many teams are interested in Dempster gives me hope that someone will offer something outrageous.

    we're going to get 50 walks from our whole infield combined ostensibly, rizzo by himself will get more than that. Likely, yes. He hasn't shown that in the majors yet (he's swung at anything and everything so far) but his minor league track record would suggest 50-65 walks in a full season. He also won't be seeing 80% first-pitch strikes his entire career.

    They probably could, but I think a Garza/Vitters combo might at least keep us competitive with most teams. Doubt it. Any Upton talks would likely start (and end) with Castro.

    So you just want movement for the sake of something new. Can't resign Gibson with the contracts currently on the books if you wanted to. Oh and he's also the MVP of our trade targets because Deng and Noah have horrible contracts. Bottom line, Paxton falls in love with his 'core' to the detriment of this franchise. You mean the same core that had the best record in the NBA the last two years?

    If the Rangers were willing to give up Profar, I think the pool of available players would expand greatly (probably Felix, Cueto and Zimmerman for starters). If we had traded Corey Patterson back in 2001 for, say, Brad Radke or Andy Pettite, would that have been a good trade? It wouldn't have necessarily been awful, but we'd all be disappointed that we didn't get someone even better.

    If we're to believe this last page of the thread, the Rangers should probably hold out for the inevitable Strasburg/Harper package. Would you trade Profar for half a year of Hamels? No, but depending on how you value them I don't think it's outrageous at all for him to be traded for Garza. Of course it's outrageous. They could get a much better player than Garza for him.

    Citing Vitters' lack of ceiling is an odd way to knock him out of consideration. Every year, despite poor results, we kept hearing about his tremendous bat speed, swing, and potential to hit for both average and power if he could learn to be a bit more selective. Now that he's appearing to be a bit more selective, he actually is hitting for average and power, and his ceiling is lower. I could see if they just don't buy his recent production as a sign of long-term improvement, but I was under the impression there was never any doubt as to his ceiling.

    The incompetency of the Bulls' training staff is horribly overlooked. They've been awful for years.

    He can say what he wants, but I think it's definitely an issue with repeating his mechanics. He's shown before that there can be times when he has no idea where the pitches are going and he gets crushed. June was one of those times, and it wasn't just the curveball that gave him issues. As he keeps starting, hopefully those bouts of inconsistency get smaller. The good news is that both the eye test and numbers back up his success, so hopefully that was just a bump in the road.

    It sure seems like it. I would think intangibles like "leadership" and "maturity" translate into someone who works really hard at getting better and is receptive to coaches. Combine that with a natural hitting ability, and the front office probably feels they have a much better chance of reaching the majors or at least performing in the low minors enough to establish trade value. Castro vs. Junior Lake is a perfect example of a guy with less athleticism but a better hit tool/attitude excelling over the guy with much better raw tools.
