  1. I like him better when he's not pitching. I wonder if he's just figured into the price for Soler at this point.
  2. My guess is guys who are in the position of GM of other teams are confident enough in themselves to not get scared by Theo. Colletti probably thinks of himself as a good GM. I think it's safe to say that Colletti is scared of Theo. Colletti also never wants to lose a trade to the Cubs, which makes him super-duper unlikely to make a big deal with us. Not sure if Colletti is scared of Theo, but I do think he views the Cubs differently. Kind of like the Grizzlies owner and the Bulls.
  3. Alex Meyer is better than whatever the Dodgers are reportedly offering
  4. Bringing him back next year is an option. I doubt we buckle. How does the new CBA work if a team signs multiple free agents? If a team like the Dodgers ends up signing a few free agents, how does signing Dempster affect their draft?
  5. Insisting that he absolutely had to be sold at a time when he clearly had very little value, for starters. It's hard to argue with that. I doubt that his value could have possibly gone any lower than it was when we traded him. Zambrano had no value then, and he has no value now. I haven't heard any rumors on Zambrano. Have you?
  6. I don't think he's very high on Garza (and keeping him around at what it will likely cost). Which makes the question even better, since Garza is a good baseball player. He's not as good as some people on this board make him out to be. And given that the Cubs haven't talked about an extension with him in months, they probably don't think too highly of him either. His trade value will likely decline going forward, so I can't see this being a positive unless the Cubs are able to sign him to a really good extension (which they've apparently shown no interest in doing). I don't think anyone on this board has made him out to be more than he is. People have specifically mentioned NOT giving him a Matt Cain contract because he's not as good as Matt Cain. But he is young enough to be still be good enough to be a key part of the rotation when the Cubs are good enough to compete. Well, Cain's average salary is 21.25, and people have said the following: Granted, there were mixed opinions on this, so there certainly wasn't a consensus. But I think we're getting to the point where we may have to consider the 5.0 WAR season an outlier, and I'm not sure if I want the Cubs giving him anything more than something similar to Danks.

  8. Never forget the Ryan Flaherty/Jeff Baker platoon that would put up a similar WAR to Aramis.
  9. If there is an upside to Eovaldi going in the Hanley deal, would it not be that the Dodger's presently need another starter (when is Lilly due back)? That offers the Cubs a little leverage, although not nearly as much as they once had. Doubt it. Colletti probably made the deal for Hanley knowing that he has a good chance at Dempster, and the only thing he'll have to give up of value for both Hanley and Dempster is Eovaldi.
  10. It's not semantics. I said a big trade target who openly talked about accepting a trade. The only similarity with Carlos Lee is that he's big in size.
  11. IT HAPPENED 3 [expletive] WEEKS AGO Carlos Lee was a big trade target? I'm talking about a guy that would bring real assets to an organization.
  12. I know the "only the Cubs" mentality is overdone by the media, but has this type of scenario every really happened before? Has one of the top trade targets ever stated for months that he was open to being traded and helping the team, and then rejected a deal for no discernible reason?
  13. I think you're reaching a bit. If the Brewers called up and said we'd take Delgado for Greinke, I doubt the Braves would even hesitate to pull the trigger.
  14. Leverage with Dodgers: Gone. Hopefully, the deal is done with them. Get this [expletive] over with. Cezar Izturis part 2
  15. Which is fine, but don't give the indication that you are ok with bring traded. If Dempster would have come out and said I don't want to be traded, this wouldn't be a big deal. Yep. Aramis basically said that last year.
  16. I was thinking that driving home. Might be worth gambling and letting him start tonight. If he goes out there and dominates St Louis, might be enough to convince whatever team to capitulate and add that extra bit to the deal. Another start can really only hurt his trade value at this point. I hope the gamble pays off.
  17. Keep in mind too the constant air of superiority that the AL has over the NL right now. They probably think the #1 pitcher in the NL is no better than a #4 starter in the AL. Exactly. Plus people are throwing out way too many stats. It's simple why people think Dempster is no better than a #3 or #4: 1. AL>>>NL 2. ERA past three full seasons: 3.65, 3.85, 4.8 3. Wins the last three full seasons: 11, 15, 10
  18. Did you miss where Luis Valbuena is our third baseman? I'm not expecting Ramirez to get back to 2009 numbers, but he can hit thirty homers, which is something most third basemen can't do. If we can get him for next to nothing other than money, we should do it.
  19. If that's all it takes to get Hanley Ramirez, the Cubs need to jump in immediately.
  20. Castro should be nowhere near the table. However, Darwin Barney and/or Junior Lake could be enticing pieces to a deal. However, we'd need a few much more exciting pieces as the centerpieces. Brett Jackson or Matt Szczur could be one of them. Seriously? You could put the four of them together and Arizona would hang up laughing. Probably not going to be enough either way but that is one hell of miss quote when you cut off the "Obviously, neither would be the main piece, which could come from the Dempster return." from the original post Yeah, I realized that after I posted. But I still think the main piece in a Dempster trade could never be the main piece in an Upton trade, no matter how many of our flawed prospects you throw in.
  21. I think the fact that Dempster can choose where he wants to go gets overlooked a bit. If the Dodgers know that's where he wants to end up, they don't necessarily have to offer the best package.
  22. And say we did end up pulling Gould and Tolleson for Dempster. I think that the two of them plus Jackson or Szczur and Lake and/or Barney gets our foot very much in the door. Trading a ton of mediocrity doesn't get you a talent like Upton.

  24. That's probably true. Although I wonder what the new front office really thinks of Garza.
