  1. An Andrus/Olt package might be the trump card, but I think we could match it or top it if we offered Baez/Samardzija/Barney for Bauer and Upton. Not that I'd do that trade, but if we were to make nearly everyone available and Theo really wants Upton/Bauer I'd do that trade (assuming Upton doesn't have some sort of degenerative shoulder issue). As much as I like Baez, if they think his plate patience issues may never resolve themselves, it might be worth trading him before he's further exposed. Getting Bauer and Upton would be a perfect example of the type of undervalued assets Theo/Jed are always talking about.
  2. Surprised there wasn't more love for the Giants.
  3. Neither are any of the other teams in our division. The Cubs have never been the biggest market, but they arguably have the biggest market advantage relative to their division. They have the biggest Market+, so to speak. The Reds are about to be.
  4. With the new CBA, every team has plenty of access to those assets. With the restrictions on amateur acquisitions, the new CBA only leaves two places where we can use our considerable financial advantages to try to defeat the other teams in our division: Non-player personnel and MLB players. Throwing away one of those two areas seems like an extremely counterproductive strategy, and it appears to me that the reason we are doing it has less to do with the needs of the franchise and more with an intellectually curious itch our new front office always wanted to scratch. I'd argue that teams with lucrative TV deals are now in a class of their own, and the Cubs aren't in it. So the Cubs supposed considerable financial advantage isn't as strong as it was in the past, particularly in the free agent market. Regardless, I'd rather use whatever financial advantage we have in different ways to acquire MLB talent as opposed to blowing it all on flawed players in free agency.
  5. Disagree that carrying a large payroll will somehow guarantee that many playoff appearances. The new CBA makes it even more difficult to build your team through free agency, and it's made even worse by the new TV deals other teams are getting that the Cubs can't take advantage of. The free agency prices are getting ridiculous, and less and less marquee players are going to hit the market. It's pretty clear that the most valuable assets going forward for teams are going to be young, cost-controlled players signed to Castro and McCutchen-like deals, followed by top prospects. We didn't have very many of those when Theo got here. He's trying to collect more, and possibly having bad major league teams for two seasons is the best way to do it.
  6. Unfortunately, I agree with this. The Celtics are very deep this year, and I can't see the Bulls finishing with a better record than them. Obviously everything depends on when Rose comes back and how well he recovers, but I really don't see them finishing ahead of Indiana or New Jersey either. If I had to guess, I see the Bulls as the sixth seed. It would be fantastic if they somehow found a way to beat Indiana out for the division.
  7. Well, since I already don't deserve them, I'l have some fun with arbitrary endpoints and stripping the context out of facts: Teams GMed by either Theo Epstein or Jed Hoyer have 0 playoff appearances in their last five seasons. Before the Cubs, those teams won, 90, 71, 89 and 90 games. And for Theo, those were down years. Hendry won 90 games once. In nine seasons.
  8. That's surprising. I'd assume he'd want a no trade clause, though.
  9. Guess we've been overvaluing Russell.
  10. Especially for a non-QB.
  11. When you're Oklahoma City, that means you're a well-run team. But when you're a revenue machine like the Bulls and giving away players like Kyle Korver just to avoid the luxury tax, that indicates cheapness. I always used to defend Reinsdorf/the Bulls on this, but this offseason was a pretty good indicator of some of the organization's true goals.
  12. Theo alt? No, he's pretty much right. Profit clearly comes before winning.
  13. Is it a blind posting system like Japan, or more of an auction?
  14. I don't think the likely asking price for one year of Johnson from a team primarily looking to dump his $15M salary is going to be prohibitive. A lot depends on the demand out there, obviously. And yea, no thanks on Buerhle. It just seems like a needless risk, unless he's really cheap. The only reason we would acquire him is to flip him at the deadline. Given his history, it's a big risk to think he'll be healthy all the way through July 31. Why would the only reason we'd acquire him be to flip him at the deadline rather than to have a good relatively young pitcher? He's on a one year deal. Given the lack of interest we've shown in signing Garza, I don't know why we'd trade for a similar pitcher who will likely be even more expensive if he has a good year.

  16. Good post, but I don't get that impression at all. They've been harping on getting and needing lots and lots of power arms for months. Yeah, they clearly want high ceiling guys. Although it seems like, rather than pure velocity, they're focusing on guys with very athletic deliveries that either already throw hard or may be able to grow into it. This hiring seems to fit right in with that philosophy.
  17. Given the likely asking price, I'd rather have Buehrle.
  18. I haven't seen the Bears much, but I find it very hard to believe that Cutler has been worse than Cam by any objective measure. The Packers game really killed his stats.
  19. Pretty amazing what a good game on ESPN will do. You could make the argument he hasn't even been the best CB on the team this year.
  20. Given our upcoming schedule, it's a must that we beat both Carolina and Tennessee. Plus a rib injury is pretty easy to protect.
  21. I think Vogelbach is being a bit overrated in these scenarios. He's one of those guys that could have much more value as he moves up the ladder, but right now he's a guy who has never played in a full-season league and is already relegated to 1B/DH. And I have no idea why Hayden Simpson would even be mentioned. At this point, he's not even worth a roster spot for a minor league team.
  22. Doesn't say that it's likely as of yet. Just that they fear it may be a Lisfranc. I hope it's a sprained MCL.
  23. There's a good chance this job won't come open again for quite a while, so if you want Kerry in there, now is the time. I don't see the risk in throwing him into the fire. What's he gonna do? Screw up the announcing for a 100 loss team? Oh no. Agreed. Although I could definitely see him preferring to replace Hollandsworth, since he wouldn't have to travel.
  24. I have to think Struck is a lock at this point.
  25. Yea, I don't think we're lacking in 40 man spare parts to drop. Still should be somewhat of a crunch though. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Just taking a quick look, we could get rid of Corpas, Coleman, Berken, Germano, Mateo, Socolovich, Stewart, Recker and Mather. Wow, there's a lot of trash on that roster.
