  1. I noticed that too. He's one of the best first basemen in baseball against RHP, but he really has to work on facing lefties. Or we can just play someone who feasts on LHP. Really aren't that hard to find. True. I guess it just depends on the makeup of the team in the future. Rizzo has shown the ability to hit lefties in the minors, so hopefully we won't have to make him part of a platoon.

  3. I would put Amaya, but I bet they pick Alcantara. They usually give the edge to guys in the higher levels.
  4. What is he right about? Everything in the last year not involving the Sean Marshall trade. http://espn.go.com/mlb/player/_/id/30728/ryan-flaherty http://espn.go.com/mlb/player/_/id/5371/jeff-baker http://espn.go.com/mlb/player/_/id/3853/aramis-ramirez
  5. I still don't get why he didn't just get Tommy John. At this point, we're basically just waiting for his arm to blow up.
  6. You've got a chance. Put up a lot of points and we have woefully unproven corners and Motta at SS is no Harrison Smith. If we don't get a pass rush, the QBs will have a chance to put up a lot of yards. QBs plural is right. Hope insists on using a three, yes three, quarterback rotation. It's insane. The strengths of Purdue's team are the D-Line, CBs, and speed at the skill positions. I would be surprised if they tried more than 2-3 passes beyond 15 yards from the line of scrimmage. You'll see lots of running the ball and lots of screens and short throws. I don't think we win, but I like the odds getting 14.5 points. If they're smart they'll throw and throw often. ND's freshman CB got burned numerous times by Navy WR's. Sticking to screens and runs plays right to ND's strengths.
  7. It needs both. They need super starts a hell of a lot more than they need more average players. There's plenty of average guys already here, or easy to acquire in a hurry. Every team needs superstars more than average players. But the Cubs don't have a lot of either (especially pitching-wise) and, like you said, average guys are easier to acquire/develop. But some teams already have them, the Cubs do not. Right. And I think the expectation is that Rizzo and Castro will eventually become those players.

  9. How can you possibly say this? They went from an elite defense to just about average in a hurry. Then they ticked a bit higher again but are still not close to elite. They very much did miss several beats. They are very susceptible to the pass and have been for a few years after once being virtually impossible to throw against since you wouldn't get much yardage or would turn it over anyway. If you're judging their pass defense from last year, it was actually pretty good. Teams passed a ton on them, mostly because rushing was futile, but they held opposing QBs to a 79 rating. This all considering they played Rodgers and Stafford twice, Brees, Rivers, Newton, and Vick once. Their pass and overall defense in general the past 5 years compared to the couple years where they were elite. They missed beats, they've missed multiple beats. Wait, did you just imply that their defense has not been elite recently? http://footballoutsiders.com/stats/teamdef Just taking a quick look at this, it seems pretty obvious that the Bears would have ranked highly in that system given that more weight was given to the late-season games (when the Bears were playing mostly terrible teams) as opposed to the beginning of the year.
  10. It needs both.
  11. still only 6 strikeouts in 80+ PA that's the main thing i take away from the almora/soler debuts. they are just not striking out at all. very exciting. Almora needs to start taking some walks
  12. Crist has been pretty unimpressive his whole career.
  13. Or Flaherty/Baker
  14. Currently at .291/.328/.527/.855 since becoming the starter and .258/.305/.461 for the season. Pretty impressive. At this point, I can't see any reason why he shouldn't be the starter next year.
  15. I don't see the Dodgers being good trade partners with us going forward. They're clearly willing to take on money, and we're not trying to shed payroll at all costs, so us paying Marmol's contract for a good prospect isn't that appealing to them.
  16. IIRC, people thought he had a pretty good hit tool. I think the expectation was that he would hit for a pretty good average (.270-.290).
  17. What exactly is this based on? I don't think there's really a reason for him to at this point. Unless he thinks this is a long-term issue that threatens his career and ability to get a long-term deal.
  18. Unless they like Hinshaw. I am starting to think that they have a pretty good idea that Camp and/or Corpas will be gone by months end, at which time they can flood the big league club wits as many of Iowa's spare parts as they like. We won't get anything of any value, but they're really of no use to us going forward, especially when they can just keep cycling through Alex Hinshaws and such. And of course there's Marmol. We could get something decent if we pick up most or all of his 2013 salary. By decent, I mean just that. Depending on the system, anywhere between someone's top 10-25 as well as a sweetener. This is such a classic WSR post. It needs 5-10 more names of AA/AAA guys with no future.
  19. Looking more and more like another 8-win season from Kelly would actually be kind of impressive. It would be. Of course people will be calling for his head anyways.
  20. Apologies for bringing this back, but seriously? You're seriously going to say that it's easy to fix problems with approach, much easier than mechanical problems? That's not even trolling from Law like the Barney comment, that's just flat out dumb. No it isn't. An approach is a mental thing that you can choose to do differently. You can tweak mechanics, but an overhaul is extremely difficult. Corey Patterson disagrees with you.
  21. Where do you think he slots in with our pitching prospects? His control has improved since the beginning of the season, and he certainly has the ability to add more velocity. I think he's a guy that could shoot up the rankings next year in Peoria.
  22. This is why people think Law and Goldstein are insufferable. A phrase like "extra guy at best" is just irritating and trolling. Up until this year, when Barney's WAR went through the roof, he was almost universally seen as a utility guy. So it's not that too far off base. Comparing Sczcur to Pierre is a good example of just irritating and trolling.
  23. It was a nondescript game against the Reds, probably 91 or 92. The only thing I remember is that the program had a feature on Ryne and Cindy Sandberg, which in hindsight is hilarious.
  24. I think the takeaway from that statement is that we'll probably never sign one of the mega free agent, 10 year contracts. It's pretty clear they think those are the worst values in baseball, and I think he's right.
  25. Has he actually said that, or are you just assuming he does since Hendry thought so highly of him? I always just assumed it, but the only times I've ever read or heard anything from Fleita is when he pumps up all of our prospects as elite talents.
