  1. Well, that depends. Marshall already has 330 above average innings at the major league level. Poreda doesn't have that many innings pitched in his professional career. ETA: And Poreda's BB rate(~5 BB/9) is scary this season in a tiny sample(~40 IP) I don't think there's any doubt Poreda is considered to be the best of the 4. Whether he ends up being the most successful is a different question though. So what he is the best at? He's the best at throwing a baseball the hardest, meaning he's highly regarded by talent evaluators. A first round lefty that throws in the high 90's will always be more highly regarded than someone like Marshall. I don't think there's any doubt the White Sox could get more for Poreda right now than the Cubs could get for Marshall.

  3. No, it isn't. There's no psychological hump that automatically stops the Cubs from being good once the postseason starts. That hump exists in the minds of ignorant fans who can't wrap their minds around the concept of sample size and probabilistic anomaly. It's 6 games over 2 years. That might be true in the abstract, but it may not be applicable to this team. It's hard to watch the games last year and not see that they clearly choked. The big plays were mental mistakes, not bad luck. And while the playoffs are obviously a crapshoot to a degree, I think any team that doesn't have good front-end starters is at a disadvantage.
  4. Good thing we overreacted and moved Samardzija from AAA rotation to the bullpen
  5. Not if it handcuffs Hendry and prevents him from adding payroll and trading for Peavy. So you'd sacrifice the long-term viability of the franchise for an extra month or two of Jake Peavy?
  6. The last update I heard was that Ricketts was trying to drum up outside investors to toss in funds in exchange for a seat on some new executive advisory board and a voice in the team's future decisions. So basically, it's nowhere close to being completed and sounds like a disaster waiting to happen if/when it finally does get finished. You mean minority owners, like a lot of other teams have? If anything, it should speed up the process.
  7. The block west of Racine and Barry on Barry does not require permits for some reason. I'd try there. Otherwise, you'll need a permit to park on the streets
  8. Link? He'd make Juan Pierre's arm look like Ichiro's
  9. Except he doesn't "ask the tough questions," he plays favorites. Just look at how he's treated Aramis and how he treated Mark Prior. If you don't like talking to the media, he turns it against you. A lot of writers do that and it's one of the reasons I hate sports journalism.
  10. It might not matter what you, personally, give him. After today he's got 1 week before he returns to Wrigley. It could get really ugly in a hurry. and it could just as easily be forgotten with one good week. Sure, it could. But it's going to take one big week to get the boo birds off his back. And I don't think it takes a lot of boo birds to get into Milton's head. well, i don't doubt that morons will boo him mercilessly. that's absurd though. the guy has had 30 PAs. i highly doubt the guy who put .947 and .999 OPS the last two years suddenly forgot how to hit. Our big free agent hitters always struggle with the Cubs (with the exception of Fukudome) in the first few weeks. I don't know if it's the weather, day games, or pressure, but people should be used to it by now.
  11. You don't think it's fair to boo someone who choked in a critical moment and then let some diehard Cubs fan essentially take the blame for his actions? I can't think of someone I would boo more than Alex Gonzalez, and that includes Dusty Baker.
  12. The Packers did it, didn't they? I don't know how they did it or how reproducable it is, but it seems like it would be in the realm of possibility. Their system was set-up in the 1920's. My guess is MLB would be heavily against such a stock sale. And I'm sure the Cubs would be too. They don't want to have to give detailed financial info to the public
  13. They even booed Harden when Bruce got the single to drive in the second run. Are you certain they were not shouting "Bruce!"? This sort of confusion pops up at Springsteen shows all the time. And yeah, Glendon Rusch sucked terribly. I don't particularly care that he was "understood" to suck. When you are as awful a pitcher as Rusch is/was, part of your job is absorbing boos. I think most people were booing the guy in the Bartman seat who interfered.
  14. If you were Chad Fox and your options were pitching for Dusty Baker's Reds or retiring what would you do? It depends on his tolerance of pain (which I think is pretty high). He could just sign with the Reds, take the money, and then wait a week before Dusty blows out his arm again. Either way, he's sitting at home in June.
  15. He's really not, but ok. See what you say in June when he's blown three or four saves. I'd rather have Ceda on the roster. So the fact that you'd rather have Ceda on the roster is justification for saying he's brutal? He's not. Your made up hypothetical isn't really much support for your case either. No I made my point on the number of walks/9 innings Gregg has had over the last two years and the number blown saves that Gregg has amassed in his short time as a closer. Also, I don't need any support, this thread is about small sample size, but whatever, he sucks. If you don't like walks, I don't know if you'd want Ceda on the roster
  16. Depth in the bullpen after Heilman replaces Harden in the rotation
  17. He might be a nice fill-in for Bradley during his first 20 game DL stint
  18. No for the first couple of months he was with the Cubs he was touching mid 90's on a regular basis. Then toward the end of the season he wasn't hitting any higher than 91-92. That's when he started walking a ton of guys and wasn't missing as many bats. There's definitely cause for concern. His last 3 games (including playoffs) as you said he walked a lot of guys and wasn't getting as many K's as before. I'm sure it's as simple as making adjustment but I'm not expecting ace type stuff like in the past any more. If it happens nice but we'll see how it plays out when the season begins. Not that I'm expecting much from him this year, but he really hasn't thrown much in spring training and he just came off a pretty bad stomach flu so he's probably still a little weak. This isn't like the playoffs when he was 87-89 with little control (although I'm sure that will happen at various points during the season).
  19. I hope the Morrisey's and Downey's of the world miss this. They'll blow this out of proportion and pit the fan base against him before he's even started playing.
  20. The great part is that other than Fontenot playing against righties, we didn't even get more LH in terms of our starting lineup. I don't understand why the media can't figure this out.
  21. 1. I never said Rondell White was the only one. I was just saying that certain teams seemed to be at the center of it, leading me to believe that some teams had a higher percentage of players using them compared to others. 2. I'm pretty sure Tim or someone else did a statistical analysis showing that veteran's performances actually did improve under Dusty in San Francisco.
  22. To run the Dodgers. I question whether Alderson can succeed without most of his players taking steroids. Most of those good A's teams had Canseco, Tejada, Giambi... mulder, zito, hudson... Given Mulder and Zito's history, I'm not sure they're the best examples to refute my statement I don't understand what you're getting at. I think it's safe to assume a majority of baseball players in the early 2000s were juicing. Should we also question the merits of other executives who ran successful teams in this era? I think that certain teams (i.e. the Giants, A's, Rangers, Baltimore, etc.) seemed to be more heavily involved with steroids than other teams. For example, the only Cub I've read about taking steroids while on the team was Rondell White (actually I think there was one other in the Mitchell report), and I don't know of any White Sox players. Remember Dusty Baker's ability to "get the most" out of veterans? I think we now have the explanation for why that was. I'm not saying that Alderson isn't a good executive, but I do think it's worth questioning how much some of these executive's (and manager's) success was due to lax supervision compared to other teams.

  25. I really only expect Harden to make 15-20 starts anyways, and it's nice to see a manager actually not abusing Z for once.
